Holden Out, GMSV In As New GM Brand For Australia

Back in February, General Motors announced it would retire the Holden brand in Australia, leading to questions over the automaker’s future presence in the Australian market. Now, GM Authority has uncovered a trademark filing that confirms GMSV as the new GM brand in Australia.
The GMSV trademark was filed with IP Australia on June 29th, 2020. Shortly thereafter, the name SV Specialty Vehicles was filed with IP Australia on July 3rd.
Trademark | Trademark Office | Serial Number | Filing Date |
---|---|---|---|
SV Specialty Vehicles | IP Australia | 2101035 | July 3, 2020 |
GMSV | IP Australia | 2097457 | June 19, 2020 |
According to the filing, the SV Specialty Vehicles brand will cover goods and services with regard to “Aircraft; boats; caravans and trailers; cycles and bicycles; vehicles including motor vehicles; engines for motor vehicles; cars, buses, trucks and motorcycles; land vehicles; cigar and cigarette lighters for motor vehicles; parts and accessories for all the foregoing.”
Meanwhile, the new GMSV brand will cover an extremely broad range of goods and service.
Following the retirement of the Holden brand, it’s now believed that the new GMSV brand will take up the slack to import select GM vehicles for the market, such as the Chevrolet Corvette, Chevrolet Camaro, and Chevrolet Silverado. For now, the exact GM model lineup headed to the Australian market is not confirmed.
Back in May, it was reported that longtime Holden executive Peter Keley was tapped to manage the new GMSV venture in Australia. At the time, GM was reportedly engaged in discussions with HSV parent company, Walkinshaw Group, to evaluate the prospects of the new GMSV venture. While the exact implementation and nature of the venture is still unknown, former Holden boss and current GM president Mark Reuss has expressed enthusiasm for it, saying earlier this year, “We do believe we have an opportunity to profitably grow the specialty vehicle business and plan to work with our partner [Walkinshaw Group] to do that.”
Then in June, a new merchandise company in Australia appeared to be making moves to cash in on the GMSV name, selling t-shirts and auto-related products with GMSV branding. Walkinshaw Group confirmed that the merchandise company had no affiliation with it or HSV.

They need to add Cadillac CT5 V series to replace the Commodore
lets hope it is priced so people can afford them not like the camaro
They are bringing the cadillac blackwing over here
The CT5 if marketed rightly would make a great practical replacement to replace as a family car. Is there a wagon version of this?
GM treats Australian government grants like free cash, takes all tax payer money out of the country and sends it back to the US.
They sink a profitable local brand with sub par products from other markets, shut down manufacturing and move it off shore. Now GM help make up a new name for one of the companies they screwed over and ask for buyer support.
Leave and never come back with your over priced rubbish.
Ford Australia did the same thing.
Well done Mary another fine example of your brilliant business abilities
After buying Holdens all my life I will never buy another GM vehicle ever again
Hate to say it, but all you Aussies act like you getting ripped off by GM is somehow exclusive to you…nope. Not even close. Welcome to the party, late.
You think this was just a GM move to rob you guys of all your taxpayer money and ship it back to America? Really??
Here in America, they did the exact same thing to us, killing off beloved brands that employed thousands of people. Not once, but FIVE TIMES.
And for what it’s worth, GM took FAR more American taxpayer money than they ever did Australian money. Yeah yeah, you guys lost something like $275 million. Try $11 BILLION pal, because that’s what we lost.
This has always been about cutting costs to stay relevant in China. GM knows they maxed out their American market share years ago, and Australia was a lost cause way back too. Their focus is entirely electric vehicles, and sales in China. So don’t pretend this is just swiping Australian money to take to the United States…this is swiping Australian money, just like American money, in a desperate hope to capitalize on China. Because frankly, that’s this company’s only hope.
Take it to Oprah buddy, 11 billion, so bloody what, you yanks seem to have heaps of money, if not, you lot just print more
Wow, so bitter lol. So bloody what, huh? When you learn how to count, come back, and we’ll have a little talk about who got screwed more. Until then, sorry you Aussies stopped buying Commodores, your own “bloody” fault.
Neither you nor holden will be missed
And neither Ford will be missed.
We still kept a lot of jobs considering Saturn sold 100,000 mostly captive imports, Pontiac less than 300,000, Saab was ALL imports, Hummer a niche brand that’s returning under GMC, and, finally, Olds which was pre bailout.
It’s easy to shout talking points as opposed to unpacking reality.
GM has paid a lot in Federal & state taxes including the licensing fees of Opel’s rebadged as Buick being laundered through a Delaware company which harmed Adam Opel AG as it almost turned a profit those final years at a time when keeping the brand alligned with Buick models, especially EVs, especially considering a turn around PSA was able t ok accomplish. This could have created more US jobs and scale for GM propulsion and Cruise.
Oz got screwed but Holden, like Pontiac, was a dead brand aimed at folks with bad credit
Tell GM to leave our shores and make shore the door doesn’t hit them on the way out.
Totally Agree that’s why I was a Holden fan all my life. Purchased many Holden’s and a big fan and now have changed and purchased my first Ford Mustang so GM can Go! Its like barracking for Carlton all your life and changing across to Collingwood. Still with Carlton but changed to FORD.
I would rather see Toyota or Kia Stinger race than any GM product.
This is a joke, Australia allowing a two faced liar into the car market, remember this is a company who ripped off the Australian taxpayer, said Holden was here for the long run and then they weren’t interested in making right hand drive cars. Give GM a miss.
Dont blame gm, blame dumb gillard etc
Dont has a ‘ in it…——>>>>>> Don’t
The word “apostrophe” starts with a vowel, so it should be “an” not “a”.
Where the hell did the word ” apostrophe ” come into it Bill……????????
The govt ripped off the taxpayer, dont blame the yanks
What is a DONT……..?????????
Grow up tom
Dont you have a brain????
Jeez, took ya a while to respond, where ya been…. getting an education or just sulking 😁😁😁
I dont bother reading rubbish very often
Yet, here you are once again 😁😁, what is amazing to me is the fact that you think it is rubbish, but you come back, tell me… how long have you been indecisive 😀😀
What ruin many families lives then substitute an Australian icon for some junk?….I don’t think so and will never buy GM again.
We need the carmro to take place of the holden
No we need the Corvette to take on the Mustang. Game over.
Chrysler srt is better and no crap conversions, all factory muscle
All that muscle and only has a towing capacity of 450 kgs, sure it has around 350 kw and a top speed of around 280 kph, still can’t tow a caravan or a loaded up 6 x 4 trailer… no thanks, this car is more of a phallic symbol for some people, and not a workhorse like the holdens that can tow a caravan or a trailer
I would not put a tow bar on a good car. Have you seen a ferrari towing a van or trailer. Get real matey
You love your phallic sybols don’t ya 😁😁😁😁😁😁
Give up on the chrysler did ya 😁😁😁😁😁😁😁 as for the ferrari, any person that owns one probably would not use a van or trailer…. they would have rich mummy and daddy tow the van or trailer around, thus proving the ferrari is not a Workhorse, but more like a wankermobile
Will pray for you
Don’t gotta pray for me mate, both my cars are running great…. how’s the ferrari and chrysler doing ?
WHAT A WASTE OF TIME PRODUCTION CAR RACING IS DEAD AND BURIED ALONG WITH HOLDEN AND FORD FALCON ,YOU CAN’T COMPETE WITH 50 YEARS OF EXCITING HOLDEN VERSES FORD FALCON. JUST GO WITH SPORTS CAR RACING .
Verses has a u in it
Cut and chopped vehicles with no safety rating. Camaro is going to be dropped anyway. GM crap all over again.
Ripped the taxpayers and I would never buy another associated with this company after owning Holdens
Holden for ever GM America NEVER.
Only a fool would trust a deceitful manufacturer called General Motors
If anyone believes that GMH has ever been Australian is completely ignorant of the truth even the first Holden was a reject US GM design all later models were from GM Design adapted for rh drive modified opels vauxall from UK Germany not to mention Japan and Korea. Ripped of by the yanks for generations by smart marketers. Know and learn your history otherwise you’ll keep being dudded.
Michael, VE and VF were completely unique Australian designs. I believe most of the earlier cars were 100% Australian too. Some of the Commodore range models were adapted from German Opel cars but heavily modified for Australia (and made in Australia).
In fact Holden’s Australian designers designed quite a lot of cars for GM.
Very clever people worked there.
Maybe you should learn your history mate!
Clever people have built lots of crap cars, corvair etc
Don’t forget fords as well 😁😁😁😁😁😁
Learn your history numb nuts, gmh became holden motor co in Australia and it dropped the gm from it’s name, at that time it was Aussie owned
I have two holdens. I would never support GM. Ford did it the right way. Future Supercars should be either Toyota Supra or Kia Stinger with the Mustang. I would never support a Camaro
It is disgraceful what GM did to Holden. Although as time went on Holden cars went down hill except for the last month which l have a great holden built here. RIP Holden.
You do know that GM owns Holden. Buddy do your research. Holden hasn’t been Holden since 1931 hence the name “General Motors Holden”.
It’s still hard to believe Holden has stopped making cars I have 8 Holdens and I love them all and managed to get one of the last VF utes made they are great cars and I wouldn’t buy anything else . Holden finished with the VF in my opinion I will never by another one as it isn’t made and designed in Australia . We can made make cars and everything you can imagine as good if not better than anyone in the world . I wish the government would change there ways
Why?
We can make cars better than anyone in the world? Ya gotta be kidding. If that was true we would still be making them
Thats called phoenixing in Australia when when you make one company go broke and then transfer the assets to new company with no debt. GM can go to hell with what they have done to Holden in Australia
I am absolutely disgusted in GM. They rip $2 billion from Australian taxpayers. They rip the livelihoods from loyal dealers. They then have the temerity to introduce GMSV. This little Aussie battler will never buy anything GM again. GM management are morally corrupted, despicable and should be ashamed of themselves. They should also apologise to the US taxpayers who bailed these scum bags out – should have let them go to the wall. That’s my rant but doesn’t make me feel better about their betrayal!!
Why don’t they just bring Chevrolet here? Why does Australia need a middle man manufacturer? Isn’t that the entire core of what went wrong with Holden, it had no identity of its own, some people saw it as Aussie because it was made here and others as just rebranded GMs. Both parties had valid points and at the end of the day the only outcome was for Holden to be shut down, it was never a matter of if, but of when.
And here they are doing the same thing again? The only reason I can come up with is their desire to exit right hand drive markets, but then they aren’t exiting now are they, just returning with a different brand.
Go away
As long as they make rear wheel drive V8’s available for the same price as a Commodore V8 who really gives a $h%?. At this point I’m happy to drive my 2007 V8 Caprice till it drops.
Actually…
A few issues
Millions if not billions of government subsidy money went into holden and they just pulled the plug then a few years later they just waltz on in without any problem whatsoever. Questions needs to be asked about politicians pockets.
Secondly will they will most likely not offer an affordable rear wheel drive V8.
Guess I have to wait and see
You wont have to wait long for that
