Holden Out, GMSV In As New GM Brand For Australia

Back in February, General Motors announced it would retire the Holden brand in Australia, leading to questions over the automaker’s future presence in the Australian market. Now, GM Authority has uncovered a trademark filing that confirms GMSV as the new GM brand in Australia.

The GMSV trademark was filed with IP Australia on June 29th, 2020. Shortly thereafter, the name SV Specialty Vehicles was filed with IP Australia on July 3rd.

SV Specialty Vehicles IP Australia 2101035 July 3, 2020

According to the filing, the SV Specialty Vehicles brand will cover goods and services with regard to “Aircraft; boats; caravans and trailers; cycles and bicycles; vehicles including motor vehicles; engines for motor vehicles; cars, buses, trucks and motorcycles; land vehicles; cigar and cigarette lighters for motor vehicles; parts and accessories for all the foregoing.”

Meanwhile, the new GMSV brand will cover an extremely broad range of goods and service.

Following the retirement of the Holden brand, it’s now believed that the new GMSV brand will take up the slack to import select GM vehicles for the market, such as the Chevrolet Corvette, Chevrolet Camaro, and Chevrolet Silverado. For now, the exact GM model lineup headed to the Australian market is not confirmed.

Back in May, it was reported that longtime Holden executive Peter Keley was tapped to manage the new GMSV venture in Australia. At the time, GM was reportedly engaged in discussions with HSV parent company, Walkinshaw Group, to evaluate the prospects of the new GMSV venture. While the exact implementation and nature of the venture is still unknown, former Holden boss and current GM president Mark Reuss has expressed enthusiasm for it, saying earlier this year, “We do believe we have an opportunity to profitably grow the specialty vehicle business and plan to work with our partner [Walkinshaw Group] to do that.”

Then in June, a new merchandise company in Australia appeared to be making moves to cash in on the GMSV name, selling t-shirts and auto-related products with GMSV branding. Walkinshaw Group confirmed that the merchandise company had no affiliation with it or HSV.

    1. Hate to say it, but all you Aussies act like you getting ripped off by GM is somehow exclusive to you…nope. Not even close. Welcome to the party, late.

You think this was just a GM move to rob you guys of all your taxpayer money and ship it back to America? Really??

Here in America, they did the exact same thing to us, killing off beloved brands that employed thousands of people. Not once, but FIVE TIMES.

And for what it’s worth, GM took FAR more American taxpayer money than they ever did Australian money. Yeah yeah, you guys lost something like $275 million. Try $11 BILLION pal, because that’s what we lost.

This has always been about cutting costs to stay relevant in China. GM knows they maxed out their American market share years ago, and Australia was a lost cause way back too. Their focus is entirely electric vehicles, and sales in China. So don’t pretend this is just swiping Australian money to take to the United States…this is swiping Australian money, just like American money, in a desperate hope to capitalize on China. Because frankly, that’s this company’s only hope.

It’s easy to shout talking points as opposed to unpacking reality.

GM has paid a lot in Federal & state taxes including the licensing fees of Opel’s rebadged as Buick being laundered through a Delaware company which harmed Adam Opel AG as it almost turned a profit those final years at a time when keeping the brand alligned with Buick models, especially EVs, especially considering a turn around PSA was able t ok accomplish. This could have created more US jobs and scale for GM propulsion and Cruise.

Oz got screwed but Holden, like Pontiac, was a dead brand aimed at folks with bad credit

  19. Why don’t they just bring Chevrolet here? Why does Australia need a middle man manufacturer? Isn’t that the entire core of what went wrong with Holden, it had no identity of its own, some people saw it as Aussie because it was made here and others as just rebranded GMs. Both parties had valid points and at the end of the day the only outcome was for Holden to be shut down, it was never a matter of if, but of when.

And here they are doing the same thing again? The only reason I can come up with is their desire to exit right hand drive markets, but then they aren’t exiting now are they, just returning with a different brand.

Many reports had the blame laid at T.Abbott, some even had a negative view about J.Gillard handing over the Millions to keep them going. What hasn’t been portrayed for all to see was the ridiculous Union demands on GM, and some of the pay rates for production line workers on a 9 Day F/nite – making similar money to a FIFO B/maker in the WA Mines working 12 hour shifts, 9 days on / 5 days off. The Holden workers were home every night, no trade quals required and heaps of other ‘benefits’ including paid time off to attend Union meetings . GM have never openly stated how they capitulated to Union demands – but in the eyes of many, that is what happened. There’s no way a production line worker was worth $130,000 p/y whilst the FIFO Tradie was being paid a similar amount.

      1. It’s simple really…. if you are concerned by so called ” useless aussies ” doing the conversion….DON’T BUY ONE ….DERRRRRR….as a matter of interest, I am of the understanding the conversions are done by HSV and WALKINSHAW that’s what makes em’ so pricey

  56. What GM should have done/should do is have a factory or/division for RHD. In other words have the vehicle made in one RHD factory in a large RHD market (UK, Aus) and for smaller RHD markets have a knock-down kit factory to finish the vehicle and upfit it with local drivetrains and options. That’s how Holden can continue or Chevy can infiltrate RHD markets.

    1. Great idea, if its not done in factory i dont want it either

      1. I’ll double down on the idea. About 2billon or so people live in RHD nations, Holden should be GM RHD division only with KD kit factory in Britain, India and South Africa with most of the vehicle made in Australia and some components and accessories made in North America.

    1. My understanding is the conversions to rhd would be done in aus by such places as hsv and walkinshaw, this has already taken place on the camaros that have hit Aus, HSV done the conversions and added around 20 -25k to the price

  60. Recently we bought a 2/18 build ‘Holden’ ‘Commodore’ Sportwagon (German made Opel Insignia (Buick Regal), which (I believe), was made in the factory as a right hand drive vehicle (with the indicator on the correct side of the steering wheel). Yes it is badged in Australia as Holden and uses the name Commodore as did the first Commodore which had a lot of Opel in it, similarly to many previous and existing brands which have different names in Australia to the names used for the same vehicles in other countries, which we have been (made to become) accustomed to for decades. Holden Gemini etc. I like the German made car that I bought second hand. Of course I’m hoping that this model is supported (while I own it for the next 20 years!), by its manufacturer.

  64. The Australian Liberal Party killed your Holden. They are living in the 1950s. France German Korea and Japan support their car manufacturing. Even Obama bailed out their car manufactures. But you 1950s Australians said no. So go and bang rocks together guys. You are paying the pay packets of forign workers and you can’t even build a go kart at a time when cars are going driverless.

    1. Should never made cars in aus

  65. Wouldn’t build em in aus, the unions will kill them off again with their greedy over the top high wages demand. Just like Holden before. Don’t blame the liberals you dimwit, look at the facts first. Unions kill manufacturing in Australia, that’s why most companies try to avoid them.

  66. Unreal the amount of people bagging Holden (and probably all manufacturers) who have left Australia. We can thank the successive governments for killing these businesses with the minimum wage becoming uncompetitive on a global stage.
It’s not the lack of tax funded subsidies or bail outs, but the lack of competitive advantage.

Get rid of the silly notion of minimal wage and you’ll have these companies back in droves.

  68. Liberals blaming the unions, labour blaming liberals for no more funding.

Unions had nothing to do with the 3-1 people like me who lost their jobs outside of the main plant.

Suppliers were not union based. I was on the same rate as every other industry along with the other 2/3 you include in your theory.

Unions in auto manufacturing held negotiations in the last 4 years with no force from Unions conseeding the need to conserve. Fact! Unions agreed to take away the add ons you talk off. Basically inside the factory became similar to the suppliers on the outside.

Joe Hockey screaming ‘I DARE YOU TO LEAVE’ in parliament was the end!

  70. Totally Agree that’s why I was a Holden fan all my life. Purchased many Holden’s and a big fan and now have changed and purchased my first Ford Mustang so GM can Go! Its like barracking for Carlton all your life and changing across to Collingwood. Still with Carlton but changed to FORD.

I would rather see Toyota or Kia Stinger race than any GM product.
