The latest 2021 Trailblazer arrives as the third generation for the nameplate, dropping in as a compact crossover bridging the gap between the Chevrolet Trax and Chevrolet Equinox in Chevy’s model lineup. The Trailblazer offers a number of features aimed at providing enhanced utility for customers, including a towing capacity up to 1,000 pounds – enough for a jet ski, for instance. Now, we’re detailing what it takes to tow with the 2021 Trailblazer.
Buyers looking to tow with their 2021 Trailblazer will need the Trailering Provisions package (RPO code V92), which makes the compact crossover “hitch ready” with a four-pin trailer light connector.
The Trailering Provisions package is standard on all models equipped with AWD (FWD is standard). Opting into AWD also requires the turbocharged 1.3L three-cylinder L3T engine under the hood, which produces 155 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque. Meanwhile, the standard engine is the turbocharged 1.2L three-cylinder LIH, which produces 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque.
Check out the complete availability for the Trailering Provisions package in the following chart:

In order to tow, 2021 Trailblazer customers will need to install a hitch and hitch trim cover. Chevrolet offers three different hitch trim covers as accessories, including a cover for the Activ trim, a cover for the RS trim, and a cover for the LS and LT trims.
Installing a hitch on the 2021 Trailblazer requires removal and modification of the rear bumper, with a specific section of the bumper cut to accommodate the new gear.
Naturally, Chevrolet recommends taking the 2021 Trailblazer to a dealer for the job, but for those DIY’ers out there, every hitch and trim piece comes with instructions and a template for where the bumper should be cut.

Live to dream.. the 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer RS equipped with a beefy 1.3L DOHC-4v 3-cyl turbo making 155 hp @ 5600 rpm and AWD;; but one still wonders whether this was the right approach given that highway mileage is only 30 mpg which suggest that the engine is working too hard especially as a Chevy Cruze got better gas mileage with a bigger engine.
they should change the heading to “how to blow up a 3 cylinder engine”
It’s nice that they run the wiring for you, getting the wiring through the firewall is the worst part of hooking up a hitch. I think a lot of people would just need that hitch for transports bikes. It’s also nice to be have the option to hook up a little Tractor Supply Co, 4×7 trailer for dump runs with bulky items that don’t weigh much. I agree with others who posted here that the 3 cylinder engine is a questionable decision made by GM. The only thing I can think is that they wanted to get this platform to market as cheap as possible, so the released this economy version. There does seem to be adequate room to fit a larger displacement 4 cylinder motor on this platform.
If its not a 4×4 forget it and front wheel drive hell no
You just lost a sale
Senior vehicle ! 155 hp 😩 Your lucky if it can get out of its own way 😁 Good thing for seniors and those needing just a commute to work SUV is prices are much, much less expensive than the millionaires Blazer RS price of $46k
I’ve actually started seeing these on the road, cute little design if that’s what you’re into.
still no power, but at least they got rid of the ugly upside down frownface toyota front grill!
I own one and it actually has some get up and go. Don’t underestimate.
I just bought the activ and it does have some power. It has a LOT more power than my equinox did!
Agreed, reading caranddriver ratings suggests most small suv’s are sluggish. This is definitely not the case for the Trailblazer that I purchased. The 1000lb towing capacity is just fine but would not recommend long trips while towing near capacity.
I own an 2021 AWD RS Trailblazer and recently had the hitch and the trim cover installed by my dealer. When I picked it up the hitch and trim cover were installed but there is no hookup for trailer lighting.
On the vehicle Monroney sticker, it states:
“Trailering equipment
4-wire electrical harness and 4-pin sealed connector for connecting your trailer’s lights to your vehicle
Optional trailer hitch makes your vehicle trailer-ready
Up to 1,000 lbs. towing capacity
May require additional optional equipment”
I’m not sure where to turn to get his resolved. The vehicle sticker stated it has the harness and 4-pin connector already installed. Yet it isn’t there. Any advice?
Thank you.
Did you call the dealer?
I would think your dealer should take care of that.
I was curious if you ever found out where the electrical harness was? I’m considering getting the hitch added on to my new 2022 RS.
On my sonic I used a Tekonsha harness from etrailer. com. I believe they have on for a Trailblazer now. It was easy to install with their instruction video and simple tools. Plan for a few hours, give or take.
It has the factory connecter for the wiring harness, remove the spare tire cover and look down just to the left of center under the plastic molding, the connecter is mounted to the body with a clip. You can buy the plug in with the 4 pin for the trailer from etrailer or other sites once you get the part number . $29.75 TK88VR is the part number. You have to open hatch and plug into trailer harness with enough slack for turns. Or buy factory harness and make a hole in your spare tire compartment and it comes with a grommet to seal out water and pin end bolts to hitch reciever. $56.00 on eBay 42736371 factory part number.
Does the trailering pkg work with a power liftgate
I have the answer: yes it does , the new hitch pkg replaces the original reinforcement and does not interfere with the hands free lift gate operation
Why not have the hitch and cover be part of the standard equipment done at the factory, or a factory option. Seems to be an engineering flaw. I don’t want any dealership cutting my bumper to install. Probably just me. But, this has caused me not to purchase. Very nice vehicle.
I completely agree with you.
I have a 2021 RS TrailBlazer I think others shouldn’t judge this car unless you have driven one. Mine has the speed. It’s a 3 cylinder turbo. If your not into a smaller engine then this isn’t for you. I think it’s stylish with plenty of leg room. Could use a bit more cargo space. The vehical takes curves nicely while passing others on the without a problem. We also love the safety features that it has as well. Not to mention our insurance bill went down $50.00 a month because of those features. I have over 10,500 miles on our vehical 🚗 so far and we absolutely love it. So, if your into small SUV’s and have a low budget ($28,000) this is the vehical for you. Honestly.. either you like the design or you don’t. Either your a Chevy fan or your not. Not every comment is based on actual experiences. Remember these are new vehicals. We purchased our back in October 2020. If you like the look and the option they have for your budget, I’d suggest you make the choice in lurching this vehical.
You’ll love it.

Hi,
I recently built the hitch and bezel piece for my Activ model. When I brought the parts home from the dealership. I opened the boxes to find there are no instructions included for both pieces. Where can I find installation instructions???
