The latest ninth-generation Chevrolet Malibu was introduced for the 2016 model year, with the current 2021 Chevy Malibu offering up a few minor updates and changes. Among these is the addition of a new Sport Edition package, as featured in the following first photo.
The model featured in the first photo here is covered in Summit White paint, which shows off the black accents nicely. The contrast between these two colors enhances the sedan’s clean, crisp lines, giving is a more aggressive, yet premium appearance.
As we covered previously, the new Sport Edition package offered on the 2021 Chevy Malibu is optional on LT trim levels, and includes the following features:
- Nameplate badge finished in Black
- Black front and rear Bow Tie badges
- Blacked-out grille
- 19-inch Black-painted aluminum wheels
- 245/40R19 all-season tires
The Sport Edition package requires Jet Black for the interior color, and is available in conjunction with every exterior color with the exception of Mosaic Black Metallic.
Interestingly, the 2021 Chevy Malibu Sport Edition package is essentially identical to the Midnight Edition package introduced with the 2020 model year Malibu. However, while the Sport Edition package is available with all exterior colors except Mosaic Black Metallic, the Midnight Edition package is only for models in Mosaic Black Metallic. In other words, the new Sport Edition package expands the Midnight Edition package to include non-black paint colors.
The Sport Edition package also joins the Redline Edition package on the 2021 Chevy Malibu options list, with the Redline Edition Package adding in black badging with a red outline, black Bow Ties, 19-inch wheels with red hash marks, 245/40R19 tires, a blacked-out grille, black sideview mirror caps, and Redline mirror decals.
Unfortunately, the Chevrolet Malibu’s future is uncertain. As we’ve covered previously, General Motors will likely drop the nameplate outright following the 2023 model year, as Chevrolet Malibu sales have dropped off considerably in the last several years.

Yawn…let me know when they actually put performance parts on it. Oh wait, that would mean GM would have to put actual effort into the Malibu! If Toyota can make a TRD Camry, then GM can put effort into making a performance Malibu. Typical GM expending minimal effort in their products.
Steve: My sentiments exactly. Wouldn’t some version of a Malibu SS sell and boost the entire nameplate?
🥱 because last time they did a Malibu SS it was a glorified hatch back
I would love to see a Malibu SS
“Sport”? Put in a RWD Camaro driveline and have a true SS. These wimpy paint touchups only hasten the demise of a basically great design.
Earth to GM. Don’t do to this car what you did for the Buick Regal GS…….nothing. Seems like GM’s efforts always fall short. The Malibu needs better suspension and more horsepower and MARKETING.
The SUVs have bulldogged any semblance of ascetics. I mean who ever heard of the thought of the entire Buick line being SUVs? Now we not only have to have boxes on wheels, but nothing resembling an SS except painted phoney-cars.
Let me know when the new one comes out that doesn’t have an interior that its competitors had in 2010 Lol
you must be talking about the hard plastic all hondas and toytoy are using is that the one? have you even looked inside this car?
Needs a 300hp v6.
A 300HP 4 cylinder would be far more likely in today’s market.
But this isn’t anything of the sort. It’s just a package with existing options in it.
How about the 325 hp 2.7T four cylinder, with a manual trans option?
For sure.
Sure, I guess if you want to start making a list of things that are never going to happen.
Yes, yes, yes!
GM Car strategy…nice initial design, cheap execution then minimal updates and no marketing. So far the strategy equals poor sales according to GM accounting unless it’s an one off EV then it’s a keeper.
Love the design of the car, but the engine options make it a non-starter for me…that, and the impending orphan status.
Amen to that, Catbert. I have a 2016 hybrid model that is a perfect family car. It is a fallen breed that could have been prolonged with newer, cheaper, denser batteries.
And this is news, apparently? Go figure. And would someone please explain to me this recent trend to blackout models. Is it supposed to be cool, or to lend some kind of street cred?? Call me crazy, but I don’t get it.
I think all this blackout crap is UGLY just like cars with that DULL paint job that looks like it’s ready for a paint job!🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
People actually pay hundreds of dollars for black bowtie packages.
I mean on some level, I can certainly see why you’d offer it. It’s an easy cash grab.
Oh GM how you’ve lost your way. I actually own a Malibu Premier and it’s a great car but once again GM is letting another great nameplate die. GM is becoming a laughing stock and I’m done buying their products. They’ve become a modern day Toyota but without the intelligence and execution.
I agree! I have a fully equipped 2020 Cajun Red, which will probably have a name change next year, Malibu Premier and I love it. Loved my 2016 Premier also Red Jewel Tint! Come 2023, I will be shopping elsewhere despite the fact I have owned GM cars for DECADES! This last lease was $200.00 MORE than my 2016 lease for the SAME options BECAUSE there were NO incentives on the Malibu! 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 It’s what I wanted So I’m paying, but never again!
I don’t think they are becoming a laughing stock.
That would mean that people are actually discussing them.
I own two Malibu’s. A 2017 Chevrolet Malibu LS and a 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu. I know you are reviewing the the cars, but I also own a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado four door, four wheel truck. Proud to be an American Chevy owner….
MAYBE GM needs to revive some OLD TV commercials like the one with Dinah Shore singing-SEE THE USA IN YOUR CHEVROLET! I told you in another post that I’ve owned GM cars for DECADES! Probably only 2 people here even know who Dinah Shore was. I’m sure YouTube has that commercial?
Those Dinah Shore commercials were a nice break from Bonanza.
Whatever it does, GM Korea needs to release this! Massive attack of Hyundai-Kia alliance is make lose attractive of malibu. So GM Korea need to respond new mid-size sedan demand, by Hyundai-Kia.
Looks good people will buy it regardless of the keypad analyst. The PSA/FCA merger would probably speed things up for a Malibu replacement as it a bit strange to have a competitior having a older platform your using for sale.
We own a 2017 Chevy malibu. Absolutely love it. Moonroof is amazing. Daughter loves it.
I have the 2016 Malibu lt. I cant say enough, that it needs twice the engine! This car is beautiful, rides nice too. But come on,4 cylinder with turbo? And a small turbo at that. Put a v6 in it and please put option to turn start stop off! I love my car,but falls short on power
All the Malibu needs is a v6, upgraded interior materials, the old F41 suspension components and something other than fake testimonial marketing. Then watch sales increase.
And another year without key active safety systems included, unlike most every other mid sized sedan the Malibu competes with.
A laughable trim addition at best. I do not like this car had it for a rental and it drove like crap. Typical for a FWD 4 banger. Power aside the car does look great on the exterior. All GM really needed to do was make this car RWD offer a V6 in the sport model and jazz up the interior. Instead they did a half arsed effort in a segment that is very competitive. The Asians have more appealing offerings.
With that sad I hope GM does not leave this segment as we need american offerings. There are still people that want to buy american cars but they are left hanging.
It seems GM is doing everything to keep customers away from Malibu to kill it next year, saying sales are plunging.
Everybody knows the Bu problems. It’s a nice car, but the interior is cheap and outdated and the 1,5 engine isn’t as good as the competitor’s.
If you don’t believe me, google “Honda Accord interior” ou “Toyota Camry”.
GM should give a next gen VSS-F Malibu its efforts. It’s a nice competitor in North America, China and Korea.

Or GM is targeting being an US-only company?
I bought 2016 Malibu and it literally fell apart on me till I traded it a month ago and went back to a Jap SUV. Never again will I buy their garbage!
I don’t see any difference from current blackout options. I do have a problem with lack of available options. I’ve been looking for five months for two tone leather interior. good luck with that. Unless you love black cloth, you’re pretty much out of luck. Dealers reply to lack of interior choices; ” We have to compete with Toyota” whatever that means. Way too much trouble to stay loyal to Chevy unless your into trucks and SUVs. I will be buying a sedan and if Chevy doesn’t come up with better incentives and selections, it won’t be a Malibu.
