The decrease follows a 12 percent drop in Q1 2020, a 15 percent drop in Q4 2019, a 25 percent growth in Q3 2019, slight growth in Q2 2019, and a 10 percent decline in Q1 2019. The Traverse outsold the Hyundai Palisade, Volkswagen Atlas (see VW Atlas sales), Subaru Ascent, Dodge Durango, Nissan Pathfinder, Kia Telluride, and the Mazda CX-9.

The GM Authority Take
The decrease in Chevy Traverse sales during the second quarter of 2020 isn’t extremely surprising given the COVID-19 pandemic, which diminished customer demand as well as available supply. We attribute the faster-than-average decrease in Traverse sales volume to the vehicle not having fully recovered from the 40 day-long UAW strike during Q4 2019 before production was halted by the coronavirus.
Other potential factors include increased competition from new entrants, such as the new Kia and Hyundai offerings or the all-new 2020 Ford Explorer, potentially indicating that the reason for the decline is product-related. Luckily, the Chevy Traverse will soon receive a refresh consisting new front and rear fascias as well as a few minor updates throughout the cabin. The refresh, otherwise known as a Mid-Cycle Enhancement (MCE), was initially planned and announced for the 2021 model year. However, complications brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic caused the update to be pushed back by one model year, so the Traverse refresh will now launch for the 2022 Chevrolet Traverse.
About The Numbers
- All percent change figures compared to Chevy Traverse sales for Q2 2019
- In the United States, there were 77 selling days in Q2 2020 and 77 selling days in Q2 2019
- For Explorer sales figures are comprised of the Ford Explorer and its police-duty variant, the Ford Police Interceptor Utility. In previous quarters, Police Interceptor Utility sales were reported as a separate line item, but Ford is now folding its sales into the Explorer line item.

Comments
Chevrolet Traverse sales fall possibly because of COVID-19 or possibly that people simply don’t need the performance of the 3.6L V6 and want something that will give them better fuel mileage because only a handful of people load up their CUV and drive more than an extra passenger.
you lost me at ” dont need the performance of the 3.6″. the 3.6 is a solid engine and should not be changed. dropping a smaller engine in the traverse wouldn’t help that much mpg wise since the traverse is a 3 row for families. if you put a 4 banger in there, it would be anemic especially if all rows are filled up and going uphill. at most you’d probably see a 1 mpg gain. which is not worth it.
The new fad of 2020 seems to he hating on the normally aspirated V6 engines with everything needing to be a turbo. In the real world the V6 is smoother quieter and returns similar mileage to these boosted 4 bangers and sound so much better doing it.
They already tried the 2.0 experiment it crashed and burned, and that was with the higher HP 2.0 not the boat anchor they are throwing in with every model now.
Two words: pandemic, availability
Oh and the 3.6 V6 is Standard in almost Every single Traverse model so it ain’t the 2.0 causing any problem with sales.
The refresh should have been sooner and more extensive for both the Equinox and Traverse.
So weird how Ford can work on an updated F-150 and Bronco rollout but all Chevrolet refreshes for their core lineup is delayed by Covid.
The Equinox and Traverse need significant updates – including a major investment in interior quality. The 2021 (now 2022) MY refresh correct the lack of a start/stop defeat switch in both cars, but it doesn’t really address the plastic feel of the interior.
It’s too little, too late. Which is a shame because both products are fundamentally solid. Chevy just needs to sweat the details a bit more.
And another thing. More safety features need to be made standard in this class. And definitely not locked away in higher trim levels.
I miss the monthly sales report.
Chevrolet will eventually need a Turbo 4 cylinder engine lineup in the 250-320 horsepower range.
The narrower 4 cylinders will help them proportion their front drive cars better similar to how Volvo did. It can look almost rear wheel drive.
Maybe the 2.7 will find its way into the next gen model. Or even better – they go rear wheel drive.
I do agree with member12, if going to a 4 cyl it must be turbocharged like the 2.7 currently in the Silverado. While keeping the N/A v6 as second option. Also an EV version.
IMO…I disagree.
GM is the only manufacturer in their category not giving discounts while Kia/Hyundai and others provide discounts and promotions. If GM wants to change this result they should include Traverse in their sales discounts. Their are NO solo commercials for the Traverse as you see with other SUVs. As for changing out the v6, that is absolutely insane and comments from non car guy… It’s great on gas mileage and the most powerful in it’s class, excluding add ons such as turbocharging and supercharging that imports and Ford do to be competitive. The Traverse is the leading seller in S. Korea based on towing.
As for updates, not sure people know the features the Traverse have…some models equals Cadillac. I like the look and the 2021 face lift. Why… I have a 19 Premier. It’s easy to say a refresh is needed when sales drop w/o any substantial evidence. I drove across half the country twice – and it was very capable in the Rockies and got about 27 mpg for a semi heavy SUV.
I did test drive the Korean Twins and Acura, not as powerful and less towing capacity despite their commercials, pricing for 3 row was higher for each, and Nissan/Honda were smaller, I could be mistaken as a cop if I bought the Ford, lol…but the Durango was a good choice but I couldn’t get pass the cost…
Take out the v6…geez…if anything, add HP.
Telluride 2nd to last on the list is a bit surprising.
Cadillac Matt, the one I test drove had Diamond tuck seats and got old pretty quick IMO. Yellow stitching on black leather wasn’t for me and I also wanted to tow which is rated less, plus I needed more cargo space for camping and fishing gear. Just my opinion… nothing wrong the vehicle itself.
Agreed. Was just so much hype about it moths back, i figured the numbers would be higher.
The interior should have been upgraded and switching over to the newer LGX 3.6 could potentially increase mileage a little and be a tad smoother and more powerful. The addition of the defeat switch is a good idea. Sales will probably eventually return but many are out of work and a 40-50K SUV is not going to be an option for some buyers in the coming months.
