Cadillac CT5 Rated Best Midsize Premium Car In J.D. Power 2020 IQS

J.D. Power has announced that the Cadillac CT5 managed to secure the top spot in the midsize premium sedan segment in the recent 2020 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study, besting the Lincoln MKZ and Kia Stinger.

The J.D. Power Initial Quality Study is an annual look at owner-reported issues with 2020 model-year vehicles during the first 90 days of ownership. “The iconic study, redesigned this year, measures components that fail and features that are difficult to use, hard to understand or don’t work the way owners want,” J.D. Power states in a press release.

Each vehicle studied was given a score based on the number of problems experienced, per 100 vehicles. The lower the score, the higher the initial quality.

The Cadillac CT5 had the fewest number of problems in its segment, while Cadillac managed to secure third among luxury brands for highest average initial quality among all models, with Genesis and Lexus in first and second, respectively.

Naturally, the Cadillac CT5 wasn’t the only Caddy that managed an impressive performance in the study. The Cadillac Escalade, Cadillac XT4, and Cadillac CT6 all topped their respective segments.

General Motors as a whole also did quite well, with both Chevrolet and GMC performing above the industry average. Among the GM brands, the Chevrolet Malibu and Chevrolet Sonic were recognized as ranking highest in their respective segments, and in fact, the Sonic achieved the best score of any model studied this year.

The worst-performing brands included Land Rover, Audi, Volvo, and Mercedes-Benz.

J.D. Power states that infotainment is the most problematic feature for all vehicles studied, with one-fourth of all problems cited pertaining to the infotainment system.

  1. What other contenders were in the segment with CT5? lol saying Cadillac beat Kia in the same segment sounds like it’s bizzaro-land. Should say: CT5 bests 3 Series, E Class, etc.

    1. If it was top of the list it beat them all, its just the other two were the closest.

    2. It’s that 3 Series, E Class, etc were not worth mentioning since they are in the typical bottom.

  2. The big question remains whether there’s still a market for a US sedan of any type and whether Cadillac will still sell more of the XT5 CUV than the new CT5.

    1. They for sure will, the CUV/SUV market is insane right now. But Cadillac is the only luxury sedan maker left in America, everyone else has killed theirs, so I hope beyond hope Caddy keeps theirs.

      1. Just ask Mary Barra how that worked out when Ford stopped building sedans. Remember when she said she was confident that GM would get the Ford customers? Then GM over built sedans and had to dump them into rental fleet.

    2. If GM can make a modest profit on passenger cars I don’t see Caddy discontinuing sedans , the trucks/utilities is doing the heavy lifting on not just GM but all domestics, even Tesla Model Y will be their best seller soon.

  3. This is BIG news and I can only hope that Cadillac will use this information in their advertising!!!

    1. Can’t say I know anyone who buys a car according to a J.D. Power survey.

      1. First, it’s not based on a survey, but rather based on the results of a study. But that’s a technicality.

Second, you might not know of anyone, but these things most definitely factor into the decision-making process for many who are in market for a car. The impact is even stronger when used by automakers to advertise the models in conjunction with the accolades.

Similarly, very few might buy a vehicle based on the fact that it was named Car or Truck of the Year… but it certainly doesn’t hurt to have the accolade, and use it when needed.

  4. I would love to buy a Cadillac CT5, but my next sedan has to be at least a hybrid, preferably a plug-in or electric. Until Cadillac produces a hybrid or electric sedan, I would not be buying a Cadillac.

    1. On a recent over-the-road trip only vehicles kept up with me were ICEed, 2 Teslas were challenging me, they got the jump but the range slowed them down while I was hitting 100+ at times.

Even when I got to my destination (w/o a charging station near by) I had to drive several places with the A/C on in humid southern heat then parked in a cramped neighborhood where a charger cord can’t reach and got back on the interstate going home, I got gas twice in a time range of 10 minutes total. I can’t imagine a current EV pull that demand, I do believe in E/Vs but they have their place.

  5. Ugly Design on the outside, to small on the inside. Not in the same class as previous generations CTS & CTS-V. I use to purchase Cadillac’s today’s sedans are inferior to the past. They are inferior to Foreign makes. Cadillac is no longer the Standard of the World!

    1. These complaints are so funny! The ct5 is bigger on the inside than the outgoing CTS you legitimately don’t know what you’re talking about.

  6. I love my CT5. my 2 previous cars were Cadillac SUV. I was tired of SUV. Really didn’t need a SUV anymore. It was also had to find my SUV in a parking lot that was 90% suv and all dark colors.
I purchased the wave metallic and get tons of compliments on the color and car

  7. best Cadillac ever made was the CTS coupe. Nothing ever came close. Best looking car by far. Too bad they discontinued it and never replaced that look and feel. Some of us just hate four door cars and station wagons (SUVs}

    1. It’s all taste, I thought the CTS coupe looked very awkward. And I’d say the best car they ever made was the late 50’s Eldorado 🙂

      1. Agreed. CTS Coupe was not attractive to me, but there you have it. People think their opinion is the same as everyone’s opinion. No sir. Cadillac is in their prime right now. They’ve never designed vehicles more beautiful than what they’re producing now. Uncommon opinion, I know. But I truly love their Escala design language. The Escalade’s interior is absolutely amazing but not over done.
