2021 Chevrolet Malibu To Offer New Sport Edition Package

The 2021 Chevrolet Malibu will offer a new Sport Edition package, GM Authority has learned.

The new Sport Edition will be optional on the LT trim level, and will include the following features:

  • Nameplate badge in Black

  • Blacked-out grille
  • 19-inch Black-painted aluminum wheels

The package requires a Jet Black interior and is available with all exterior colors, except for Mosaic Black Metallic.

Malibu Sport Package = Malibu Midnight Package

Those paying particularly close attention may notice that the Malibu Midnight Edition package – which was added for the 2020 model year – includes identical features as the new Sport Edition package. However, the Sport Edition is available with the entire 2021 Chevrolet Malibu color palette, except for Mosaic Black Metallic. Conversely, the Midnight Edition is available exclusively with the Mosaic Black Metallic exterior. In other words, the Sport Package brings the features of the Midnight Package to all the other colors of the Malibu.

One more appearance package? Really GM?

It’s technically not another appearance package per se, but rather the same appearance package as the midnight edition, now available in conjunction with exterior colors that are not black.

I bet it took a committee of highly paid execs 6 months to hash this decision out and we won’t see it until the end of the model year. Someone ended up with an achievement award too, for forward thinking and creativity.

A functional and efficient car company would have decided it between meetings over lunch break.

Having worked at GM proper, I can tell you that you that your assessment is highly exaggerated. The way these packages come about is typically via the product manager. It’s a simple exercise that has a relatively short turnaround.

In fact, the biggest piece is recognizing the feedback. In this case, there was feedback from dealers that showed that the Midnight Package is being asked for for non-black colors. It’s called listening to the customer.

You can’t truly listen to customers and then make a decision over lunch… but it doesn’t take six months, either. You’re bouncing around between two extremes, neither one of which is realistic.

Perhaps instead of an additional appearance package our company added safety features as standard equipment like our competitors do instead of optional at an additional cost.

Again Alex. Like I have said here so, so many times, GM getting feedback from dealers on what the customer wants is GM,s biggest problem. There is simply no way the dealer knows what a potential car buyer wants ! With GM the dealers order what they think they can sell, and from there just reduce the price until it sells. This has nothing to do with what the customer wants ! This has to do with what is available to the customer for X price, and the customer then satisfies with a less wanted vehicle !

And I believe you still can’t get the 252 HP 2.0 engine in any of these packages (only available on the Premier)!

    Why, you’re killing the car?

I think its running for 3 more years. Why not do another appearance package?

The one thing about the current Malibu is that I didn’t really like it at first. But I’ve grown to like it more over time, and it seems like a lot of cars in this size/class are starting to take on similar styling cues.

Since the refresh it has become a consistent seller, even with the big switch over to crossovers. The platform has one more full body redesign in it with light weighting and technology updates should see it through until a full on electric vehicle replacement is ready.

Hey GM, we asked you to improve your product which in other words means better interior design with better quality materials, and suitable powertrains options.

The Malibu is a great car and I have had several of them. Most of them were back when you could buy the SS 2-door and I loved them. My wife still drives them (her 3rd) newest one is a ’15 but I quit buying them because I want a 2-dr car for my own driver.
So —– GM, when are you going to add another 2-dr SS to the lineup. You should have a 2-dr, 4-dr. If you still had a 2-dr I would be driving one for my own personal driver. Instead, I opted for “brand-X” which I’m not real happy with but it’s a 2-dr.

Just give it more power, the 2.7T engine would do.

A “sport” package needs to be more than badges and 19” wheels. What happened to sport packages that meant more HP and a tuned suspension. Soooo disappointed again.

I am a real Chevy nut. Had many Corvettes, (still have one) Chevelle SS’s, One Impala SS and several Malibu sedans. I’m ready to replace my current (2-dr brand x ride ) and Chevy has nothing to offer AGAIN except an SUV which I don’t want or need. I have a Silverado 4×4 . I want a 2-dr ride.
I’m starting to think Chevrolet is actually trying to get rid of it’s customer base. It boggles the mind. I always thought building a product was about customer support for that product line. Perhaps Chevy is going the way of Pontiac.

Wow how original. 3 packages of essentially the same thing. Underpowered 160 Hp base engine. Oversized 19″ ugly black wheels. Same suspension as garden variety Malibu. Boring CVT transmission with no paddle shifters. And not even the option to upgrade the engine. It’s obvious they aren’t even trying here. And once again they aren’t even bothering to correct what needs fixing with this car starting with the dumb fabric dash and cheap interior materials which tells me this car will be gone in a few short years. What a depressing company!

GM is beginning to operate like some of the local grocery stores by cutting the product line down to the one item that sells the fastest. The store assumes you will just buy whatever is there. WRONG !. The customers will move on to a different store that has the product they want.
Time to wake up GM. You are losing your customer base to foreign markets.

I would sure like to hear back from GM on these comments.
