Updated 2021 Chevrolet Spark Launches In South Korea

General Motors has just launched the new 2021 Chevrolet Spark in South Korea, the home country of the automaker’s successful minicar. The sixth model year of the third-generation Spark, first introduced in early 2015, hit the South Korean market with several updates, including two new range-topping editions with more exclusive and highly customizable styling.

Specifically, the two new uplevel variants of the 2021 Chevrolet Spark for Korea are called Red Pick and My Fit. Both are special editions based on the Premier trim level, but with appearance enhancements that emphasize the sporty character of the city car and expand customization options for customers. With them, Chevrolet aims to increase the attractiveness and improve the competitiveness of the Spark against its domestic rivals.

Although the 2021 Spark maintains the exact same exterior design that was introduced with the 2019 model-year facelift, the Red Pick and My Fit versions stand out by adopting a darkened overall finish and adding distinctive detailing. This includes the black Chevrolet bow tie as well as black grille edges, rear view mirrors, 16-inch alloy wheels, and black badging.

The exterior of the 2021 Chevrolet Spark also benefits from an updated palette with up to 10 different body colors, including two new shades named Wonderland Blue and Sunset Orange. A two-tone option is also available, which allows combing the selected base tone with a black roof, as well as multiple accessories and unique accents to give the car unique personality.

All versions of the 2021 Spark continue to be powered by the naturally aspirated 1.4L LV7 I4 engine offering 98 horsepower and 94 pound-feet of torque. The engine can be coupled to the same transmissions available in the current model: a five-speed manual and a continuously variable automatic.

  1. Bring the Chevy Spark back to the U.S. and all of the other American nations. There are many city dwellers who need a smaller sub-compact car to get parking spaces that a normal sized car (or even a SUV) cannot fit. And many buyers still want to save on gasoline even if prices drop. As a city dweller myself, I see thousands of imported sub-compacts and only a handful are U.S. brands such as the Ford Fiesta.

People do buy small cars to spend less, yet only the imports can satisfy their needs. So bring back cars that cost less than $20,000.

    1. The sonic is still in production and is technically a sub-compact priced under 20k. However, the sonic is now the longest running platform for a GM passenger vehicle without substantial improvement. This speaks volumes for how well the original Sonic was engineered, but it’s time for GM to step up to the plate and improve their offerings in this segment. The Trailblazer is a step in the right direction but is woefully under-powered. I agree that GM does need to address this segment in the immediate future or risk losing a market share that they will never get back.

    2. The Spark is still available, and will be for 2021. I’m not sure where this bring back the Spark comment is coming from, because it hasn’t gone anywhere. The only cars Chevrolet has discontinued are the Cruze, Volt, and Impala. The Spark, Sonic, and Malibu are still in production.

  2. They both look nice! They would be good starting points fore an SS!

  3. An interesting idea, but for me this is too small of a platform for an SS. I believe that something based on the new Trailblazer or a new Sonic with a 2.0t would be the ideal subcompact SS offering.

    1. Hybrid! The spark is very light, and with a 250+hp from a hybridized drivetrain, and AWD, it would be an absolute rocket!

      1. I’m all for any GM product in the B/C segment that isn’t an absolute petrified turd, like pretty much everything they offer there right now. The chances that they go hybrid in this segment are slim to none. I’d be competing with the bolt a little, which wouldn’t make much sense. And developing a whole new chassis for the torque of that AWD would be mad expensive, especially when the new VSS-F already offers an extremly competent AWD chassis. However, with rumors of toyota bringing the GRMN engineered 1.6t to their subcompacts, Subaru offering a 2.5 in the crosstrek, Mazda offering a 2.5t in the 3, and a new GTI just around the corner GM needs to announce some type of answer.

        1. The Bolt costs more than twice as much. If it is competing with that product at all, it’s the fault of the Bolt.

          1. My loaded 2020 Bolt LT was $27,400 out the door on Jan. 30,excluding Federal Tax credit. So not 2x as much. And like every month since January,GM is offering $8500 in rebates.

            1. I was obviously estimating. You got a huge discount on the Bolt, and the Spark is still starting at $13,220.
              So, 2.07x as much?

              1. I was making reference to the fictional higher performance hybrid Spark that would obviously be priced higher than 13k.

                1. Gotcha. I’ll cease being pedantic.

                  1. Lol. I appreciate it tho. So please don’t hesitate next time.

              2. Everybody got a huge discount on the Bolt this year and a loaded Spork would be far more expensive out the door. And of course have less range.

  4. Ironically, Korea is the worst market to sell Spark; while the Spark was born as the result of Korea’s Kei-car standard, those are bygone era, with Korea being the most luxury-centric large market in the world; ie BMW 5 and 7 series sell more in absolute volume in Korea than in the US. Even something like Sonata and Optima don’t sell anymore, with most people’s first car purchases being either Grandeur(Azera in the US) or BMW 3 series.

GM would have a much better luck pushing Cadillacs than Sparks in Korea.

    1. So looking at the sales data for South Korea, it looks like the Spark has been Chevrolet’s most successful model. 38,834 sold in 2019, compared to the next Chevrolet vehicle, the Trax at 13,174. It isn’t even doing badly overall, compared to everything else. The BMW 5 series sold 18,317 for example, and the 3 series only 5,508.

It’s almost like you’re wrong and don’t know what you’re talking about.

      1. LOL,comparing a BMW against a Spork,especially for sales comparisons.

  5. And Raymond … a small pickup like the mid 1980’s Chevy LUV. And GM if’you’re listening, it too with a small hand full of options auto/ac/cruise/am-fm radio/cloth seats/ crank windows … the essentials for less than $20,000. All the manufacturers need to get off the supersized, horsepower craziness and bring fuel efficient vehicles to the forefront.

    1. I’ve had both the gas version and an EV in 2015. Loved the EV! In fact, I’m kind of looking right now for a cheap one just to pay cash for and zip on past the gas stations once again! I have the 2006 Buick Lucerne for long rides.
