Return Of Third Shift At GM Spring Hill Plant Delayed Indefinitely

The return of the third shift at the GM Spring Hill plant has been delayed indefinitely due to supplier constraints.

Speaking to The Detroit News this week, a GM spokesperson confirmed that “near-term supply constraints and the need to further evaluate market conditions as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic,” had forced GM to delay the return of the third shift at the facility. The American automaker has previously planned to return to full production capacity before the end of June and was preparing to bring the third and final shift at Spring Hill plant back online in the coming weeks.

“At this time, we do not have an official return date for third shift,” the spokesperson said. “We will continue to monitor business and market conditions moving forward.”

While GM had previously expressed a desire to get its plants back up and running at max capacity ASAP, it also said that it would align production with market conditions. With many still off work or out of a job due to the COVID-19 pandemic, automakers will be apprehensive to flood the market with product early and end up with too many days worth of inventory later in the year.

Some GM plants had to come back online as quickly as possible as the automaker was already running low on inventory for some of its more popular models, such as the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra. The GM Spring Hill facility produces the GMC Acadia, Cadillac XT5 and Cadillac XT6 crossovers.

According to The Detroit News, around 90% of GM’s employees are now back at work. The majority of employees as GM plants around the globe have also returned to work, including at plants in Mexico, Canada and South Korea.
