The GMC Sierra Heavy Duty line got a complete overhaul for the 2020 model year, with an updated exterior, interior, and a variety of new features as well. Now, however, we’re getting our first look at the latest 2020 GMC Sierra Chassis Cab.
Outside, we see the latest 2020 GMC Sierra Chassis Cab bears the same updated fascia as the standard Heavy Duty pickup models, with a large, rectangular grille, C-shaped lighting signatures, and sculpted lower styling lines between the bumper and central air intake.
Standard spec for the 2020 GMC Sierra Chassis Cab 3500 HD includes the naturally aspirated 6.6L V8 L8T gas engine, which mates to the MYD six-speed automatic transmission, and produces 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque. Meanwhile, the turbodiesel 6.6L V8 L5P Duramax is optional, connecting to the Allison 10-speed automatic transmission (which is not really an Allison) and producing 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque.
Other standard features include an external engine oil cooler, external transmission oil cooler, and a heavy-duty locking rear differential. Meanwhile, the list of optional extra includes an Autotrac two-speed transfer case and Integrated Power Take-Off.
For standard spec inside the cabin, there’s Bluetooth wireless connectivity for select phones, as well as the GMC Infotainment System with a seven-inch diagonal touchscreen. A set of vertical, high-visibility trailering mirrors help the driver stay aware of his or her surroundings. Things like dual-zone automatic climate control, 4G LTE WiFi, and heated bucket seats are optional.
All told, the 2020 GMC Sierra Chassis Cab is a good-looking rig, and it comes with a plethora of upfit options. These include:
- Ambulance and rescue
- Cargo body (box truck)
- Dump truck
- Platform / chassis cab
- Snow plow / spreader
- Utility / service truck

Nice and it’s about time regular cabs have become available again, both HD pickups and chassis/cabs. These models have basically been unavailable to order from Chevy and GMC since March of 2018. The long phased roll-out of the new HD’s, regular cab tooling going to Navistar for the Silverado Medium Duty, the strike and now the Covid-19 crisis has forced a lot of fleets and commercial users to Ford and Ram because GM just didn’t have the product. Maybe GM can start winning some commercial customers back. It’s a little bit of a surprise cab and chassis trucks and commercial vans are still offered under the GMC brand, I guess there’s enough GMC dealers selling commercial trucks to make it worthwhile.
A quick search of the internet of things reveals there are plenty of Silverado 4500, 4500 & 4600 medium duty trucks available in 2019 & 2020 model years still on the dealer lots. Available in Regular & Crew Cab configurations. Go to: Locatechevroletworktrucks.com. Check the boxes that pertain to the options you are looking for & the search engine will do the rest. I realize that this is one step above the 3500 series but it gives you more options and might be a more robust vehicle.
Good point, but my company for instance buys a lot of 2500 series cab and chassis for service body installations. And those have not been available from Chevy or GMC for a long time. The Chevy medium duty is nice (we have a number of them) but there are some applications that they are too large for.
Give this truck 2 more redesign cycles and it would easily grow right into the Medium Duty Category based on how big it is now, overall this truck should do well with most Fleet Vendors based on these configuration options.
Wow looks great. Miss selling commercial GMC trucks. Surprising how many companies for whatever reason would rather have GMC commercial over chevy. I saw it a lot. I had one client bought about 10 cab chassis every 3-4 years for several cycles to replace old trucks. All cab chassis, some were crew cabs dual rear wheels for service bodies and some regular cabs for special service bodies. Then the “sales” staff had 1/2 ton crew & extended cabs. All dark green. They letter them with gold lettering. Very sharp trucks!
If you want to use CNG, E85 or LPG propane, don’t buy a 2020 model. The 2021 models will offer an option for E85 fuel with the 6.6 liter gasoline engine. You can probably place your order for the 2021 models at the end of July but check with the zone office of GM for the exact date for the 2021 order dates. Use the E85 version for running on propane because they have special valve seats of a different material to survive a much longer life. Remember that the 6.6 gas engine has a much higher 10.8 to one compression ratio, which means better low end pulling power and better miles per gallon.
GM still has not brought back RPO KL5 gaseous fuels option, so probably the E85 option is as close as you are going to get for gaseous fuel prep.. What is interesting is there is an SEO ship-thru option for ECO Vehicle Systems, a CNG/LNG upfitter. Have not seen any detailed information on that.
