New Package Increases 2021 Blazer Towing Capacity On Some Models: Exclusive

Introduced for the 2019 model year, the new Chevrolet Blazer has a maximum tow rating of 4500 pounds (2041 kilograms). However, that rating was only realized on models with the 3.6L V6 LGX engine, AWD, and the optional V92 Trailering Package, which includes a heavy-duty cooling system. Since the package was only available for AWD models, front-drive Blazers with the same 3.6L V6 LGX engine had a significantly lower tow rating of 1500 pounds (680 kilos). Luckily, that will change for the 2021 Blazer.

GM Authority has learned that Chevrolet will add a new towing package specifically for front-wheel-drive 2021 Blazer models that will increase its towing capacity.

The new towing package will be called VR2 Trailering Package. It will be available only on 2021 Blazer models equipped with front-wheel-drive and the 3.6L V6 LGX engine. The optional package will include the same robust cooling system as the aforementioned V92 package available on AWD models. Opting for the package will increase the maximum 2021 Blazer towing capacity of front-drive models to 4500 pounds – the same as on the AWD model.

The existing V92 and the new VR2 towing packages are essentially the same, though the former is offered exclusively on all-wheel-drive models while the latter offered only on front-wheel-drive models. Both require the 3.6L V6 LGX engine and are only available on 2LT, 3LT, RS and Premier trim levels. Besides the more potent engine cooling system, the packages also include Hitch Guidance on 2LT and 3LT models, along with Hitch Guidance with Hitch View on RS and Premier models.

Meanwhile, the towing capacity for other Blazer models – those equipped with the base 2.5L I4 LCV and mid-level turbo-charged 2.0L I4 LSY – is 1500 pounds. That’s because those the optional V92 and VR2 towing packages are not offered in conjunction with those engines. The tow rating is the same for Blazers with the 3.6L V6 LGX engine but without the optional towing packs.
