Chevrolet Silverado Medium Duty Recalled Over ABS Warning Light Issue

The 2019-2020 Chevrolet Silverado Medium Duty has been recalled due to an issue with the ABS warning light found in the vehicles.

The defect: according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Body Control Module (BCM) on 2019-2020 model year Chevrolet Silverado Medium Duty trucks may lose connection with the Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM). If this happens, the EBCM software programming will not illuminate the ABS malfunction indicator light.

The hazards: if the ABS malfunction indicator light is unable to illuminate, the driver may be unaware if an ABS failure occurs. This can increase the risk of a crash, as the driver may have an unexpected loss of braking performance. Additionally, vehicles without a functioning ASB light  fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) Number 105, “Hydraulic and Electric Brake Systems.”

The fix: dealers will update the software calibration for the body control module (BCM). The update will be performed at no cost to the owner.

Affected components: BCM, EBCM, ABS malfunction indicator light.

Affected vehicles:

• 2019-2020 Chevrolet Silverado Medium Duty 4500HD
• 2019-2020 Chevrolet Silverado Medium Duty 5500HD
• 2019-2020 Chevrolet Silverado Medium Duty 6500HD

Number of affected vehicles: a total of 12,200 vehicles are affected by this problem in the United States.

Owners should: GM will notify owners of affected vehicles and instruct them to make an appointment with their dealer. The recall is expected to begin on June 13^th, 2020.
