Last year, GM Authority was the first to exclusively report that the two light-duty, half-ton GM pickup trucks – the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 – would get updated interiors, either for the 2021 or 2022 model years. Now, we’ve managed to obtain details surrounding the interior updates for the 2022 Silverado – which will also deliver a midcycle enhancement / refresh to the full-size truck.
Sources familiar with product plans tell GM Authority that the 2022 Silverado will receive a nearly identical console and center stack as the all-new, 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe and 2021 Chevrolet Suburban, though a few minor changes will be made, particularly for trucks with the front bench seat option.
Photos of the updated center console and center stack for the refreshed Silverado are currently not available, but we’ve learned that the setup will mimic that of the new SUVs, pictured below.
Besides the standard fixed center console, the 2021 Tahoe and Suburban also offer an optional power-sliding center console. It’s unclear as of this writing whether this option will make its way to the 2022 Silverado interior update. Additionally, the 2022 Silverado will gain the option of upfitter switches on entry- and mid-level trims.
In the meantime, model year 2021 Silverado will see the same interior as the 2019 and 2020 models, while gaining expanded availability of active safety features as well as the power-operated tailgate. The feature will become available on LT, RST, and LT Trail Boss models. For the 2019-2020 model years, this power up/down tailgate is only available on the high-end LTZ and High Country models.
Since their introduction for the 2019 model year, the T1 platform Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra have been criticized for lackluster cabins, particularly on higher-end trim levels like LTZ, High Country and Denali. Some have derided the all-new GM trucks for having interiors that do not compare well to the competition, particularly the Ram Pickup, which was similarly overhauled for the 2019 model year. The 2022 Silverado interior enhancements will be aimed at addressing those criticisms.

Meanwhile, the Silverado HD and Sierra HD will gain the aforementioned interior updates for either the 2022 or 2023 model years. In the meantime, both trucks will receive many minor updates for the 2021 model year:
We’ll have a lot more on both the 2021 Silverado and 2022 Silverado shortly, so be sure to subscribe to GM Authority for the latest Chevrolet Silverado news, Chevrolet news, and around-the-clock GM news coverage.
Editor’s note: an earlier version of this story stated that the 2021 Silverado will gain the revised interior elements. We have since learned that these updates will instead arrive for the 2022 Silverado.

Fuc#ing finally.
Thank you GM Authority for keeping us informed through this. Now I can finally wait to place my order for a 2021.
Console only. But that work truck interior center stack and dash???
Agreed that on console mike, also doors please! They need a little love. Please oh please no dash like that!
You and me both, too bad these updates were pushed to 2022.
Well now , great news for a lot of people. Unfortunately my High Country is already in my driveway. Guess I’ll have wait 2 years now for a nicer interior. O well , that 6.2 more than compensates as far as I am concerned.
If they still offer a no-console interior, fine. If not… -shrug- There are other makes.
Well this is definitely interesting news. I wonder if this means a new Center stack will be available now also and the new panoramic sunroof. Maybe the column shifter is gone now also. I like the new suv interiors. But I hope the screen on. The trucks stays incorporated into the dash and not stuck up and out like the suvs. I also find it odd that now that spy photos of Fords new interior have been out GM has an idea of what they are up against so they decided to get the new interiors in now while sales have been strong. And why not make them stronger by offering the updates now and not next year. I was about to order my AT4 next weekend. But now I wanna see what’s up. I’ve been waiting for the new interior refresh. For me it wasn’t so much the screen size like most. It was the fact when I get out of my 14 and intro these trucks. I don’t get that excited feeling like I’m in something new and cool. The interiors are to close to the same. And when your shelling out close to $80,000 here in Canada for an AT4 I wanna have that wow factor when I get in my new truck. Hope GM does it right 👍🏼
Guess you aren’t in the loop, GM announced they would redesign the interior between yr 2-3 of the current gen lifecycle, just like they did to the exterior last generation. Ford always does their next generation reveals around the same time. No matter which way you look at it, either it’s GM doing the catching up on ergonomics, or Ford just trying to stay ahead of the curve.
This is how it should be like in the 2007-2013 era Silverado. LTZ, SLT & Denali Sierra got the Tahoe/Yukon interior. And now add High Country to that list, obviously. Completely different interior from dash to door pulls.
Standard on LTZ and SLT, and then the Denali and High Country get nicer leather and HUD standard.
Lower trims like RST and LT can still get leather, both bench or console, but maintain the same interior layout as the cloth wrapped counterparts. Custom trim models get less features.
This was all planned. Silverado sales have skyrocketed (despite the strike), and they wanted the Tahoe to wow people instead of “oh yup it’s got the 2019 Silverado interior”, and now the Tahoe has wowed people with its debut and we get a quick Silverado updated to keep its sales trajectory pointed up.
I wonder if they’ll announce SuperCruise for Denali and High Country for 2021
Just in time for the new F150 that looks to have a nice interior, but just a slightly tweaked exterior.
Also just to point out re the article title. The center console is the arm rest storage, cupholders, etc. The center stack is the screen, controls, etc.
This is nice but I am hoping they do not carry over another feature of the 2021 Tahoe/Suburban and no longer offer fog lamps. I went to “build” one on chevy.com and could not see any. When asked I was advised that they are no longer available. The Blazers are the same way, no fog lamps just headlights. I run the fog lamps all the time at night for added vision. Anyone know if this will be the case?
Better headlights so that you don’t need to drive around with foglights on all the time seems like a pretty good deal to me.
George,
I’m a headlight researcher (not at GM but a leading supplier) and I must tell you that modern LED lighting matrices make dedicated fog lights completely useless. The type of lights plus the pattern from the LED configuration available in the Silverado are about 300% more effective in “fog” and “low visibility” driving situations than fog lights. That grows to about 1000% more effective when using ADB / active matrix.
So there’s zero functional reason for modern cars with LED forward lighting to have fog lights (unless you’re stuck in the past).
I have LED projectors on my 17 Sierra and fog lights still help. Headlights are still too bright in dense fog. They help illuminate lane markings at night when everything is wet. They also can be used as cornering lights like what RAM does. Sorry, not believing you.
I agree with my 2018 Silverado, which has HID (upgraded bulb/ballasts too). Fogs help for the area right in front of the truck, by headlights are slightly raised to see further out but miss this. Nice on windy backroads in the woods.
Yep, new LED lights are atrocious. They are blinding 300% better to oncoming traffic.
B.S. You may possibly be a headlight researcher (is this actually a job title?), but apparently you have never driven in white out conditions with poor lane markings in the black of night.
I’ve had vehicles with all kinds of lamps and having more directed illumination on the pavement with fog lights has literally saved my life.
I consider fog lights essential on all of my vehicles. They should even be a standard safety feature.
Yes, I’m a researcher focused on lighting applications. I’ll spare you my full title as it’s irrelevant here… suffice it to say that I spend every working day engineering lighting technologies for automobiles.
It seems like you’re not familiar with the ability of an active LED cluster to aim and adjust its lighting direction and output. This technology, which isn’t yet legalized in the US, delivers exponential improvements in the conditions you describe over a traditional fog light/lamp setup. Get with your local government officials to legalize ADB since NHTSA is about 15 years behind the times when it comes to lighting regulation.
On a separate note, I find it hilarious how you feel perfectly fine to “call BS” on a comment by someone else who you don’t know, and who literally has spent their entire career working on headlight systems, even though you don’t even know what’s possible and available on an active LED matrix. Yup, you definitely know more and understand the topic better… hope that helps you sleep at night after you gulp down your scotch.
David – its not LEDs… it’s actually the regulations from NHTSA. If the gov body allows for active matrixes to be available in the USA, it will negate the conditions you refer to. In Europe, Japan, Korea, Russia and other countries what you described isn’t a problem because they don’t have headlight regulations established in the stone ages.
Finally – those that hace commented about having LEDs oh their trucks should know that these are the most basic configurations. They are not active, which is what I am referring to in my earlier comment.
I was thinking that quite possibly you were talking about what the auto manufactures call laser headlights. But since we don’t have them here because of outdated laws that say you can only have a low and high beam it’s a mute point as far as this discussion goes. To not have fog lights available with current headlights here is a huge problem.
Well George was talking about the 2021 truck he is planning on ordering. You probably do know more about vehicle lighting, but if you’re talking about fog lights not being needed because of the newer lighting systems, wouldn’t they have to be available on the truck George is ordering to make your point valid?
When they become legal in the USA, let us know.
all they talk about is safety I feel fog lights are a basic safety item
I have mixed feelings on this only because I would have liked GM to give the trucks their own distinct interiors. Put some effort into making your product standout in a good way. But any update is better than none.
Is there a reason why so many manufacturers are using those displays that are perpendicular to the dash? That design always strikes me like it was an afterthought. If the screen was retractable or upgradeable then I’d understand. The Ram and F-150 seem to have figured out a way to integrate a good size screen while still keeping everything tidy.
Guess Ill wait till 2022. Don’t ever understand why the 2500/3500 HD is always on the back burner and a year behind the 1500 for updates
The HDs are not on any back burner. The cadence for the HDs is a year after the light duties. Why? Because there is a finite amount of engineers, designers and product planning staff to go around. They need time to work on projects and bring them to production.
They’re not making pizzas or burgers here… these are extremely complex products with thousands of parts that take time to develop and bring to market. They can’t just snap their fingers and a product – one that meets all the product, quality profit criteria – magically appears. Not saying that to insult your intelligence, but rather to keep things in perspective.
The cadence I describe applies to literally every single automaker in the world. BMW brings out the bread-and-butter 3 Series Sedan about a year (sometimes two) before it brings out the 4 Series Coupe, and another year before it brings out the Convertible. Mercedes does exactly the same thing with every other vehicle in its lineup. Audi released the Q7 SUV three years before releasing its Q8 “coupe” variant. The list goes on and on.
GM has actually gotten really good about getting the cycle for HDs to be only a year behind the LDs. The HDs at Ford and Ram are sometimes 2 or even 3 years behind the half tons.
While I agree Alex, GM takes longer to do everything. They get an idea for a sticker package that includes different tires and it takes 2 years to get to the dealership. They can’t pivot very quickly. The trucks are their top sellers and on the 3rd year they’ll repurpose the console? WTF. The amount of misses and over sites on the t1xx is astonishing.
Terrible interior. Whoa, news flash people wanted a interior that was better than the previous gen? 8″ screen? High Country means they spray paint some trim pieces?
24 gallon tank. On a truck that can tow 13k? That’s a joke, right?
They went from 3.42 gears to 3.23 AND now use 33″ tires instead of 32″? Wait, what? 3.42 needs to be an option outside of max tow.
Push button tailgate release? Really?
5.3 is still soft. I have one, it’s ok…but it needs a power increase.
Just stop with the 5.3 8 speed, do the WT 5.3/6 and the 5.3 DFM 10 speed.
Idk about now, but you got a 3.42 on the z71 package as well on the last gen. The reasoning for the lower gear in the diff is that there is a much taller first and second that when multiplied with the diff ratio give you the same final drive ratio or better than before. Why they keep making the tank smaller and smaller is beyond me. Last gen was 26 if I remember correctly. At least offer a 35 gallon as an option for those that tow long distance.
The only way to get 3.42 now, with a v8, is the max tow package.
Last gen it was 5.3, 8 speed and 3.42 gears with a 32″ tire.
This gen it’s 5.3, 8 or 10 speed and 3.23 gears with a 33″ tire (32 on 18″ rims).
8 and 10 speed have a nearly identical 1st gear.
They went from a 26 gallon to a 24 gallon as well. I don’t like my 26.
The 2019s ride a lot worse than the 2018s, but I’ve heard the suspension was tweaked for 2020. Haven’t driven one yet.
Fix those things, upgrade the interior design and materials to class competitive level and I’ll look again at 2022s or 2023s. Or I’ll look elsewhere.
The difference on the final drive ratio 10 sp 3.23 vs 8 sp 3.42 is .4142 with the 8 sp having the advantage. Final drive ratios of 15.181 and 15.5952. I’m guessing GM reasoning is that this isn’t enough of a difference for those that occasionally tow/haul. If you opt for max tow that final ratio is 16.074. They should make the 3.73 available for max tow which would get you to 17.531. Or place a bigger first gear in the transmission.
The time to buy a GM HD will be ’23 if you can wait that long. You will get the new interior, and I suspect the L5P will be tuned up substantially. Ford seems to have out did themselves this time with the Powerstroke. Beat the L5P up the Ike with 30K by over a minute and rumors on internet talk I am hearing the mpg is impressive. I suspect that the work Banks has been doing with the L5P turning out substantial HP and Torque numbers with mostly stock internals is not going unnoticed by GM. They will also do some work on the exterior, although I am good with the current styling, I suspect they will try and make it easier for everyone to look at. I understand waiting for the updates to hit the HD’s is frustrating, while I get it, doesn’t mean HD buyers have to like it.
Google translate failed this guy
A step in the right direction. Now they just need to figure out how to get the 4.3/5.3 MPG numbers back up where they used to be and improve the highway number on the 2.7.
I’m sorry but the center of the dash looks terrible! I love the dash in my 2019 ltz, being that it is vertical and prominent. It’s a damn truck it’s supposed to look tough!
The 2019 interiors don’t look tough, they look cheap. 2018’s were far better. I’m not sure if the Tahoe interior is the right choice for a pickup but the current one should be in bottom trims only.
Just the center console? That’s it? What about the dash? What about the rest of the interior? This is the “BIG” mid cycle refresh? I hope there is more to this than just the console.
Who said it was going to be “BIG”?
You also might want to read the whole article…
“Before we go, we should also note that there will also be a few other 2021 Silverado interior updates besides the new console, and we will be back to report on those very soon…”
Personally, I don’t think that Silverado and Sierra even need any of these changes or updates… but thanks to all the non-truck buyers who complained, they’re giving it to us anyway.
When I sat in a 2019 the console was the biggest sore thumb, followed by the center stack and blank buttons, then the materials. GM was faster to refresh the Malibu in 2015(??) Then their most important vehicles. Ugh.
I about died when they talked about the exclusivity customers demanded with the High Country. They painted some pieces bronze. Lolololol
it is a start they pinched pennies and gave you less storage than I do not feel there is much of an improvement from the last generation. educate me on the improvements
Where did you read anything about space? I didn’t see anything about space in the article.
Mind you that space costs nothing… it’s not more expensive or less expensive so you’re totally off the mark.
When will this new interior come out in the fall of this year
Not the subject of the segment….But put that decent front end or similar on the atrocious HD versions. In the face macho is phony macho!
That display popped up with vents underneath breaking up the center console is still ugly. And if it uses the same parts code, does that mean that the column shifter goes away? I still like a column shifter and no I’m not old. And why not put upfitter switches on the higher end models? Maybe I still want to put extra lighting on a high end model. GM gets in it’s own way too damn much.
With GM these days it is one step and two steps back when it comes to interior design. Everything looks better except those absolutely ridiculous and completely moronic switch levers for the transmission! I cannot say that GM is alone in this dumb ass trend, Honda, Lincoln, and Hyundai are going to push button type transmissions. If people loved them so much, why didn’t Chrysler keep putting them in their cars when they first introduced them over 60 years ago! I hope they get a gazillion complaints about these switch levers and finally figure out how bleeping stupid they are!
Chrysler discontinued the pushbuttons because some bureaucrat determined it was too easy to select Reverse while the car was moving forward. Chrysler demonstrated that if the vehicle were moving forward more than a very slow speed, hitting “R” put the transmission in Neutral. You then had to actually press N, then R to get Reverse. This was not good enough for said bureaucrat, so the buttons were outlawed.
Note: you could still “rock” a MoPar with buttons, thus the “more than very slow speed” exception. The buttons worked mechanically.
Another laptop PC screen for the display just like many of the cars are going to. Uglier on the dash, but probably easier to fix when it goes bad which is good. The 2020 Silverado display/dash was certainly not good, but I would have preferred a better integrated screen/dash design. IMO, this new display doesn’t look like it belongs in a truck.
Um, I’d still take the Ram’s interior but the Silverado looks better on the exterior.
Center counsel = leg cramps here we come . Made for little guys .
Do you sit with your legs spread? The console is nice to put things in. Only way I’d want a bench is a regular cab.
When running on cruise control I have my right leg canted over a bit for comfort. Consoles get in the way.
Not sure who was complaining, but I have never bought a truck based on how pretty the cabin was. Or how fancy. I get why Dodge made theirs all pretty. They need something to attract buyers. I generally buy a truck for it’s performance as a TRUCK! So GM can make a pretty cabin or not so much as long as the keep building the best truck for TRUCK things, I’m in.
A couple of things the market has changed trucks used to be primarily bought by people in the trades and people who had a need fo one and also owned mid level or luxury full size sedan or coupe where the automakers made there money, Now all the profit is in pick-ups,full size SUV’s and mid-size, mid-level and luxury SUV’s and people buy them as there primary vehicle and cannot afford two $800 note payments when before people paid cash.I would not care if you could get the most powerful engines and advanced safety features in low level trims but that will never happen.I would love a reg. cab 6.2 4wd non-off road package w/ a 2 speed transfer case and aggressive tires(Z71 packages do not have real off-road tires and the ride on rough wis.roads gets annoying.} So if I am going to spend that kind of money I expect nice plastics and seats.
Well, now you have a truck that performs well AND is pretty. I don’t understand why people are so threatened by a good looking cabin. The only thing I can think of is they have the older cabin and are disregarding the newer updates to justify their truck that’s parked in their driveway.
I do understand the frustration of those who recently bought a 2020 and are now hearing about this. I also think it’s funny that GM Authority is claiming that they were the first to break this news but only a week or so ago they put out an article saying that GM wouldn’t refresh its cabin until 2022. I think many people would’ve held off on their 2020 purchase knowing this…
Either way, it’s a smart move for GM. They’re listening to critics who criticized the 2019-2020 interior (watch any YouTube video) while maintaining the GM engine quality.
As for the interior, I think it’s nice but I agree with others on this site who believe the Silverado’s cabin shouldn’t match the Tahoe/Suburban. It would be nice if GM trucks had an updated unique style that was directed more towards those who drive them.
It should be interesting to see what Ford releases at the end of this month. Hopefully Chevy continues to gain traction.

Alex,
The GMC Denali has the screen in the dash, so does that mean the The top of the line High Country or Premier get the same treatment?
I hate this tablet screen sticking up trend needs to be in the dash where it belongs
Looks like the new interiors will keep the same instrument cluster from the 2019-2020’s.
Which in itself is very similar to the previous gen.
I thought they would have updated that as well, but I guess not.
Shame, as I really thought that was a big let down in my 2019 Z71. The cluster in my 2014 Z71 was nicer.
I like that the interior is changing but that center display that just sticks up is down right ugly. With Ram and now Ford going with a large display like Tesla GM is falling behind. I was about to buy a 2020 GM Silverado or Sierra then I found out that there was a change coming to the interior. So I decided to wait. Now that I see the new interior i am not sure about buying a 2021. I hope it looks better in person when it comes out. But really lets get a large screen like Tesla, Ram and now Ford.
Any inclination about a panoramic sunroof for the Silverado? I know Tahoe and Suburban just received them.
Still horrible compared to F150 and not even close to the Ram . Junk!
Love the look of the Silverado exterior and was planning on getting the 2021 when I thought it would have a updated interior. Now that I have to wait another year….guess it will be another Ford for me.
Gmauthority,
Does the 22 Tahoe have the same updated entertainment setup as the new 22 silverado? I like the Silverados new console shifter and longer information screen
