The upcoming Chevrolet Silverado ZRX may receive the automaker’s supercharged 6.2L LT4 V8 engine.
According to TFL Truck, General Motors is working on a truck-specific version of its supercharged 6.2L LT4 V8 engine. This truck-focused performance engine will allegedly find its way into the Chevrolet Silverado ZRX off-road pickup, which will compete with products like the Ford Raptor and upcoming Ram Rebel TRX. The LT4 V8 is currently found in the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, where it produces 650 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque.
GM Authority was first to report on the Chevrolet Silverado ZRX. We uncovered a trademark filing for the ‘Silverado ZRX’ name last summer and revealed exclusive details about the truck in a subsequent report published in September. The Silverado ZRX will follow a similar path to the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2, featuring more robust suspension, MultiMatic DSSV dampers, front and rear electronic lockers, and modified bumper treatments for improved departure and approach angles.
We also said previously the Silverado ZRX would feature GM’s naturally-aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 EcoTec3 engine and GM 10-speed automatic transmission. This would be representative of the route GM took for the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2, focusing on upgraded suspension and body updates and leaving the same powertrain as the regular version of the truck. This will still be the case, from what we know, but TFL Truck’s report may be a sign that GM will offer a more powerful engine option as well.
TFL Truck’s report also indicates the truck-specific version of the 6.2L LT4 V8 will be used in other GM products, such as its full-size SUVs. This lines up with rumors that GM is working on a performance-focused Cadillac Escalade with a supercharged V8 engine of some sort. It’s not clear when we can expect this supercharged Escalade model variant to arrive.
GM also announced its new off-road racing program for the Silverado ZRX last year. The new program will see off-road race team Hall Racing campaign a Chevrolet Silverado LT Trail Boss with MultiMatic DSSV dampers in the Best in the Desert off-road series. The truck will essentially serve as a real-world testbed for the Silverado ZRX, allowing Chevy to develop its suspension and other components in a demanding motorsports environment. Notably, Hall Racing’s truck has a naturally-aspirated 6.2L L87 V8 rather than an LT4.
We’ll keep our ears to the ground for more information on the Chevrolet Silverado ZRX and will report any updates, so be sure to subscribe to GM Authority for more Silverado news, Chevrolet news and around-the-clock GM news coverage.
