While General Motors announced the new Chevrolet Tahoe PPV just a few days ago, the automaker also offers a 2020 Chevrolet Silverado police truck, as profiled here.
To begin, we should point out that the 2020 Silverado police truck is technically offered as an SSV (5W4), or Special Service Vehicle. This differs from a PPV (9C1), or Police Package Vehicle, in that the SSV-based Silverado police truck is basically a fleet-level vehicle which is then later customized for police duty, as opposed to a PPV which is offered as a police vehicle from the outset.
The 2020 Chevrolet Silverado police truck is built on the Work Truck 1WT equipment group, and is equipped with the naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L82 engine. Output is rated at 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic handles transmission duties. Both 2WD and 4WD are offered.
Body configurations for the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado include either a Crew Cab and Short Box, or Crew Cab and Long Box. Seating capacity is maxed at 3/3 front and rear.
The 5W4 Special Services Package includes special calibration(5J1) that disable the keyless remote panic button for the exterior lights and horn. It also adds calibration (5J3) to disable the interior and exterior automatic lighting, which is activated by adding a wired connection to the BCM via an upfitter. There are also provisions for grille lamps, siren speakers, a horn and siren circuit from the factory as well. The rear doors are inoperable from inside the vehicle.
Additionally, the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado with the 5W4 SSV package includes the following content:
- High-capacity air filter (K47)
- 220-amp alternator (KW5)
- 120-volt outlet (KI4)
- 120-volt bed-mounted power outlet (KC9)
The 2020 Chevrolet Silverado is offered in a number of unique SEO color options, which are optional in conjunction with the standard colors, but are only available when ordering five or more vehicles at one time.
The 2020 Chevrolet Silverado is also offered with the Z71 Off-Road package, which includes:
- Off-Road suspension (Z71)
- Hill Descent Control (JHD)
- Skid Plates (NZZ)
Like all SSV Silverados, the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado police truck is produced at GM’s facility in Silao, Mexico. The customer can then ship the truck to upfitter Kerr Industries, which adds the lights and other police-specific components before it’s delivered.

Uh, duh. Good move but why not use 6.2L engine and 10L90 10 spd auto. Its gonna be a big seller as Ford and fca are doing police packages for their half tons. Also make sure this truck is flex fuel so department’s can save on fuel costs.
The 6.2 doesnt offer much better in terms of power compaired to the 5.3, and the 6 speed looks to be used as the truck is geared more towards offroad situations and rescue more then for fast response and speeders.
The 10 spd is the future, better to get ahead of the than have to catch up. OK, forget the 6.2, Gm needs to get the new 6.6l v8 in the 1/2 ton with the 10 spd. Off topic, like the new Ford 7.3 gozilla there very old school like it alot. Gm needs to get their 8.0L v8 which is industrial only now in the 2500 and up, also make a gm emission certified marine version. Be excellent for. Airboat. A oem powertrain version would need to be tweaked to 440-460 hp. In NA form.
This is a good time to bring back the 5.7 with E85 capability. Trail Boss and Camaro would also be good with that engine.
anything e85 is cool. All these ethanol plant workers out of work right now. It makes me angry cause its so unnecessary. You know that police spec Silverado. Hum put the old 7.0L corvette motor with the 10 spd auto. That’d be a real sleeper. Be like the old police interceptor cars of the 60’s like the Ford 428 police interceptors, the dodges wthe the 440 v8s. That cop spec Silverado needs a wider 17 or 18 inch lower profile tire, like a 285 or 305mm wide tire.
That’s cool. Ram is the only pickup I’ve seen with a police package,so I’m glad to see Chevy getting a piece of the market.
5.7 on E85 would be about 400 horsepower and 440 pound feet of torque. This would be more durable and heavy use reliable than a premium fueled engine. That’s why they want the 5.3 for the PPV. (BRING BACK the 5.7)
Chevrolet (trucks) have such a diverse option list for engines and transmission because of fleet, commercial, and private use.
A Camaro, Z71 Tahoe, Trail Boss Silverado etc would be fun to drive with 87 octane and a 5.7. With dynamic fuel management I would guess maybe 25 mpg highway in the Camaro with the 5.7 /10 speed automatic, sweet.
Just a little food for thought.
