Competitive Sales Comparison
The healthy increase in U.S. Chevrolet Spark sales during the first quarter of 2020 enabled the city car to continue as the best-selling model in its segment. As a result, the Spark outsold the Mitsubishi Mirage and the Fiat 500, which has been discontinued in the U.S. market after the 2019 model year.
Segment share was dominated by the Spark at 65 percent, with the Mirage taking 32 percent and the Fiat 500 making up two percent.
Sales Numbers - Mainstream City Cars - Q1 2020 - United States
MODEL | Q1 20 / Q1 19 | Q1 20 | Q1 19 | Q1 20 SHARE | Q1 19 SHARE |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
CHEVROLET SPARK | +45.60% | 9,352 | 6,423 | 65% | 48% |

FIAT 500 | -57.97% | 327 | 778 | 2% | 6% |
TOTAL | +6.56% | 14,325 | 13,443 |
The mainstream city car segment expanded nearly 7 percent to 14,325 units during Q1 2020. The Spark was the only vehicle out of the three competitors to see sales grow.
The GM Authority Take
The significant increase in Chevrolet Spark sales volume during the first quarter allowed the model to cement its leadership position in the segment, outselling all other rivals combined. The Spark was also the only model in its segment to post an increase for the quarter.
Interestingly, Spark sales defied the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has severely impacted the entire automotive industry. We believe that the Spark was able to significantly buck the trend, not only for the segment but the entire industry, because production of the city car never stopped at the GM Changwon plant in South Korea, resulting in greater retail availability during a time when availability of other vehicles became sparse to non-existent.
In fact, production across GM Korea plants continued during the coronavirus pandemic, sometimes at reduced levels, which is in stark contrast to idled vehicle assembly operations across all GM plants across North America and South America.

Hope Chevy will keep cars like this on during the CV Depression, that ensure new buyers to GM in rich, coastal cities.
As an owner of 2018, this is a great little car. Have had no problem. Great gas mileage.
