2020 Cadillac XT5 Wireless Phone Charging Improvements Outlined

The midsize 2020 Cadillac XT5 ushers in a fresh mid-cycle update that includes changes to the trim level naming conventions, new exterior styling options, new packages, and the latest tech features. The refresh also brings improvements to the XT5 wireless phone charging system, as highlighted here.

Although visually identical to the previous system iteration, the new XT5 wireless phone charging system delivers charging rates up to 15 watts (3 amps), as requested by the smartphone. That’s a substantial boost over the previous system’s charge rate of 5 watts (1 amp). The new system still uses PMA and Qi charging standards.

What’s more, the latest XT5 wireless phone charging system also comes with enhanced cooling capacity for even-quicker charge times, and makes it easier to properly align the phone on the charge pad.

To use the new XT5 wireless phone charging system, first make sure your phone is compatible by referring to the device manual. Then remove all objects from the charging pocket, and insert the phone so that it sits at the bottom of the cradle. The charging pocket can be located just ahead of the center armrest, before the traction control buttons, and orients the phone vertically.

If the phone is properly aligned and free of obstruction, the XT5 wireless phone charging system will indicate as such with a green lightning bolt symbol in the central infotainment display. If the lightning bolt icon is yellow, it means that the phone may not be compatible, or there are obstructions in the charge pocket. If there is no lightning bolt icon, the phone may need to be repositioned.

Note that the phone may get warm during charging, and that warmer temperatures may slow the average charge rate. This is normal.

The XT5 wireless phone charging system is standard on Premium Luxury and Sport trim levels, but is not available on the base-level Luxury trim. As a reminder, the 2020 Cadillac XT5 adopts Cadillac’s latest Y trim level strategy.

  1. Without wireless Car Play I don’t use the wireless charging, as I still need to plug in my phone. Same issue with my Buick Enclave – it’s nice to have wireless charging, but useless if you want to use Car Play as you have to plug in anyway. At least in the XT5 it’s obvious you’re only going to put a phone there. In the Buick Enclave, it’s a nice flat surface where you may be tempted to put almost anything there, including coins or other metal objects.

I bought one of the wireless adapters that plugs into the USB port but it’s kind of clunky how it works.

  2. I have complained to my dealer twice that my charger does not work. I remove the case from my phone, place it in the charger and….. nothing. It indicates on the dash that it is working, but my phone continues to lose percentage of power. Very frustrating.

  3. When will Cadillac get with the program? People use/rely on phones for everything and the inability of GM to capitalize on its importance to their customers in all trim levels as a basic feature is almost beyond comprehension. Phone charging and car play app integration are table stakes in today’s world. Get with the program GM it’s the age of everything Alexa! Unless of course Cadillac is attempting to go down market…..

    1. Could you clarify why are you think Cadillac is not with the program?
