New Lawsuit Filed Against General Motors Over 5.3L V8 Oil Burn Issues

A new class-action lawsuit has been filed against General Motors over alleged issues with its Generation IV 5.3L Vortec V8 engines.
This new lawsuit is essentially identical to the previous class-action proceeding that was filed against GM in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio late last year. This suit has been filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington at Seattle.
Just like the previous case, this lawsuit claims the 5.3L V8 engine found in certain 2010-2014 model-year GM trucks and SUVs are prone to burning oil. These engines, the suit claims, have a flawed piston ring design that may lead to excessive oil consumption. Additionally, the suit claims the positive crankcase ventilation system (PCV) may suck engine oil out from the valvetrain and deposit it into the intake, causing it to be burned away. The suit also says the active fuel management system causes excessive oil to be sprayed onto the piston skirts, allowing it to sneak past the piston rings and causing it to burn off.
Also like the previous suit, the filing points out that the electronic oil monitoring system in affected trucks and SUVs will not inform the driver about the oil level itself, but only the quality of the oil. The plaintiffs claim this allowed the low oil levels to go undetected before they experienced significant problems with their engine. GM told dealerships to carbonize the rings and combustion chambers of affected vehicles as part of a technical service bulletin, but this is not a permanent fix, the suit says.
As we pointed out before, GM redesigned its 5.3-liter V8 engine after the 2014 model year, using different piston rings and adding a shield to deflect oil away from the piston skirts. The newer versions of the engine also feature a true oil level sensor and new valve covers. Vehicles involved in this class action were all built between 2010 and 2014.
The list of vehicles included in this class action suit includes:
- 2010-2013 GMC Sierra
- 2010-2014 GMC Yukon
- 2010-2014 GMC Yukon XL
- 2010-2014 Chevrolet Avalanche
- 2010-2013 Chevrolet Silverado
- 2010-2014 Chevrolet Suburban
- 2010-2014 Chevrolet Tahoe

Is there going to be recall?!!!
On 10-14 everyone else just gets to spread and bite the pillow. Which really sucks these companies think we (the customer) have money to burn. The bright side is at least its not a ford……….
I bought 2013 Silverado with 68,000 miles. I always check the oil when I put gas in. It’s a pain because I’m only 5’ 7” and shrinking as I get older. The truck averaged 1 quart per 1,000 miles. I mostly drive on the highway at 55 to 60. When I drive 65 or faster the V4 mode does not engage. I use about 3/4 quart per 2,000. My truck has 84000 on it now. It’s the Aluminum block and head. The spark plugs started to fail. When I removed the first plug I Noticed It wasn’t as tight as it should have been. So the previous owner knew about the oil problem. I bought extended aftermarket warranty. They put in new new pistons rings and what ever they Service bulletin called for. I don’t have enough miles to tell you if it work. But I will update as soon as possible. I would also like to know where to sign on for the lawsuit.
Hi Mr. Harvey. I highly recommend that U get the device from Rangetec that keeps the engine in V-8 mode constantly. I recently sold the truck with a conscience as the Rangetec seems to have alleviated the issue on my 2014. 2014 models are not in the class action suit as far as I know and 2014 5.3 engines may have a different baffle set up to deflect oil away from where the splashing of it gets past the rings. But I’m not entirely sure.
Please contact me about 5.3 l burning oil had nothing but issues with 5.3 would like to be added to lawsuit Colin Coomes 580 603 0877
This has been an issue from the beginning of the LS vortec series engines, biggest issue is engineers and the board are in such a hurry to get to market, that quality takes a back seat to longevity and customer retention. Engineers hate the tech/ professional or diyer so the vehicle, A) has planned obsolesce or repair exceeds value of vehicle, B) to get you into the stealership to fleece you out of your hard earned money or plop you in a new bigger turd than original, afm is a stupid design and asking for issues later. Lifters intake headgaskets random codes that are sub connected via ecm. Oil burning is just the tip of the iceburg on these suvs and trucks. 04 Yukon xl 5.3 flex fuel burned oil since I drove it off the lot, at $23k plus fees and tax i figured I would get more for my money….79k transmission, sorry out of warranty pressure control circuit a open or shorted. Long shifts slipping ect. 156k intake gaskets oil burning still and issue updated valve covers nope more oil burning. Cat below threshold exactly 80k day warranty expired o2 sensors been pretty irritated w this yukon. Still burning oil at 333k. Cyl 2 plug cakes at 6500 miles. Added anti fouler has helped some.
Well my 2009 chevy Silverado has the same problem losing oil and foul number on spark plug. It has the 5.3 vortex engine I’ve had trouble with since I bought it same problem as the 2010 and 2014 needs to be addressed with GM.
I have a 2010 five.3 Colorado 2 Wheel Dr. it has been noisy since 19,000 miles and uses 2 quarts of oil every 3000 miles I have 118,000 miles on the car now and I’m disappointed in the gas mileage and the use of oil can I be added to the class action lawsuit
I have a 2010 Silverado. replaced the transmission at 80,000 miles because of the torque converter fins came apart. Now at 113000 miles the AFM caused several lifters to fail and the loss of all oil pressure. Chevrolet dealership wants over 10 grand to replace the engine and my extended warranty wont cover it because it’s oil related. I’m still paying on the truck and only had it two and a half years. I really need to be added to this lawsuit.
My 2011 Chevrolet 5.3 has had pvc issues, oil issues, cylinder issues then a complete GM long block changed out for 5000
Please consider adding me to lawsuit

Discovered this issue when my 2011 Yukon XL wouldn’t start. The plugs were carbonized, the chambers were gunked up, and the intake was drenched in oil. I disconnected the crankcase vent line from the left valve cover and ran it to a catch can. The catch can filled up in less than 100 miles with oil. The blow-by was that bad. The vacuum was sucking oil out. So I ran my catch can out line to open air. Then, the line from the air intake tube thst goes to the right valve cover area had been sucking in oil too. I think it is supposed to be the air in for the crankcase, but mine was doing the opposite. I ran that line to a catch can as well and vented to open air. I had disabled the AFM V4 junk via a tuner long ago. I dumped in a bunch of Marvel Mystery Oil in the oil and gas. Changed plugs. I had to hold the throttle down to start. And it is running rich. Fuel trims are out of spec. After some aggressive driving (Italian tune-up) it is doing so much better. But the internal damage has been done. I hope it runs a little longer. The LS motors are 1955 technology with computer trickery to get past Federal mandates. GM needs to redesign their entire V8 line. 20 year old Toyota V8’s don’t drink a drop and stay strong. How come GM can’t design something like that?
2011 Silverado 5.3 a quart a month. Had code P0521, changed the oil pressure sensor and screen two times. Finally had a Chevrolet off-duty mechanic look at it, he mentioned a special builtin for the valve cover, piston & ring and the oil pressure relief that is causing the issue. So I call the local Chevrolet Service they ask for the last eight of my Vin# and said you have an air bag recall as well from Nov 2020, I still have on-star (my Chevrolet) why no notice??? I said what about the special builtin? We will look into it and call you back, two days go by I call back they ask for my last eight again and we will call you back….crickets.

Hello all. I still don’t understand why the 2014 Silverado and GMC Sierra are not in the Class action suit. ??? Apparently they will be in a recall if there is one. ??? Or…are the 5.3 engines in those 2014’s made differently with the issue addressed. ???
Baffles added..????? .,What s the difference…..???..Anyone know. ??? I sold mine but I’m curious…… ????
Can anyone tell me if there is a law suit involving the 2007 Chevy Silverado with 5.3 vortex engine? And where I can find this information?
