New Hurst Short-Throw Shifter For Chevrolet Camaro

Executing a quick, clean gear shift with a manual transmission is a beautiful thing, and now, Hurst is making it easier with a new short-throw shifter for the Chevrolet Camaro.

Offering a substantial 40-percent reduction in shifter throw, the new performance part comes with a CNC machined housing, a hardened steel pivot ball, and an isolated handle to help reduce vibrations. The piece includes a military-spec anodized black finish, and is intended for use with the stock shift knob.

“Designed for the enthusiast who wants to retain the factory shift knob for a stealth look, but upgrade to all the performance benefits that this shifter delivers,” the company states in a press release. “This all adds up for a classic look and a firm performance feel for your ride, and it’s backed by Hurst’s Lifetime Limited Warranty.”

The new Hurst short-throw shifter is designed for 2016 through 2020 model-year Chevrolet Camaro LS and LT trim levels equipped with the TR3160 six-speed manual transmission. This gearbox can be identified by the reverse gear’s location in the upper-left side of the shift pattern. Models equipped with this transmission are paired with the turbocharged 2.0L inline four-cylinder LTG engine, and the naturally aspirated 3.6L V6 LGX engine.

These days, the joys of rowing your own are few and far between, so it makes sense to eke out as much as possible from those sports cars still equipped with three pedals. Indeed, a short-throw shifter like this unit offered for the Chevrolet Camaro can make a substantial difference in the driving experience, making shifts quicker and more precise. It’s also a relatively simple modification for those folks who enjoy turning wrenches on their own ride.

  4. Drivers are a lazy bunch and it’s why the number of production cars with a manual transmission as an option continues to shrink; just think, the same can be said for automatic transmission as vehicles in the next 5-10 years will feature some sort of autonomous driving; it’ll be an option on cars and trucks before they reach a level where companies find people willing to accept not driving as someone will say how their grandfather had a car with a 10-speed automatic transmission instead of the autonomous system.

  5. CORRECTION – the LT1 V8 engine connects to the TR6060 transmission, not the TR3160 as originally stated in the article. The confusion stems from an error in Hurst’s own description of its shifter, which erroneously lists the LT1 6.2L as equipped with the TR3160 transmission.

  6. So clarify… this DOES or DOES NOT work with the SS/6.2L V8?

Perhaps a simple re-write of the entire article is in order.
