New Chevrolet Onix Taking These Markets By Storm

The next-generation Chevrolet Onix debuted in South America back in September of 2019, and now, it’s taking both the Argentinean and Brazilian markets by storm. Looking over the numbers, other markets probably won’t be far behind.

According to the latest figures, Chevrolet Onix sales are up by 39.77 percent to 1,708 units total in Argentina. Meanwhile, in Brazil, Chevrolet Onix sales are up by 45.58 percent to 26,775 units total, with Onix hatchback sales totaling 17,652 units, and Onix Plus sedan sales totaling 9,123 units total. Note that these numbers are just for January and February, as numbers for March are currently unavailable for these markets.

Those figures make the new Onix the best-selling model in both the Argentinean and Brazilian markets.

The latest second-generation Onix arrives seven years after Chevy introduced the first-gen model in Brazil. Slotting in as the Bow Tie brand’s latest subcompact, the Onix is offered in both a hatchback and sedan body style, the latter of which carries the name “Onix Plus” to help differentiate it from five-door variants.

The new Onix rides on the new GM Global Emerging Markets architecture, or GEM platform. The new Onix is also bigger than the first-gen model, and offers greater levels of refinement and safety. Outside, we see Chevy’s latest global design language utilized, while technology like onboard WiFi and park assist are on offer.

Motivation is sourced from an all-new Ecotec three-cylinder engine. In South America, buyers can can grab a naturally aspirated 1.0L producing 82 horsepower, or a turbocharged 1.0L producing 116 horsepower. Both an automatic and manual transmission are on offer.

As we covered before, General Motors recently filed to trademark “Chevrolet Onix” and “Onix” with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), raising speculation that the nameplate (but not necessarily the car) may see use here as well.

  3. No thanks. GM kills the cars I would actually be interested in (SS, Impala and Cruze hatch if it had a decent engine) and brings in this crap?

    1. The Cruze had a “decent” engine, the TD. I had a 2018 Cruze TD.

  5. This is basically a Chevy Sonic replacement. B segment.
But the Sonic direct replacement is not in sight.
This is a scenario like the new Chevrolet Tracker vs the new Chevrolet Trailblazer one is Emerging Market and the other is a Mature Market, CUV (Trailblazer sister of the Encore GX)
The Onix is an Emerging Market sedan and there is no Mature Market sedan (as it would be a direct replacement of the Sonic).

  6. The Chevrolet Onix would be perfect fit for the US market and most likely replace the chevorlet Sonic in the future because of low sales.
However, the refinements in the Onix and with the all new Ecotec three-cylinder engine line up is very impressive .
For the buyer, if coming to the US will have the options of a hatchback or sedan version respectfully .
We will all see if GM makes the final move on the Chevy Onix coming to the US.
