After launching the new range-topping Buick GL8 Avenir earlier this month, General Motors has just released the first official images of the refreshed Buick GL8 ES and GL8 25S – two other variants that complete the full-size MPV’s solid lineup in China.
For those who don’t know, the Buick GL8 ES is a variant of the third-generation MPV that has been on sale since 2016, and has just received a mid-cycle refresh. Meanwhile, the 2020 GL8 25S is an updated version of the second-generation model originally released in 2010, which Buick has since maintained in its lineup due to its popularity.
The new 2020 GL8 ES includes many of the design and technology enhancements introduced by the GL8 Avenir family. In this sense, its exterior has a more elegant appearance due to the new Buick winged grille, with a unique finish and the new Matrix LED headlights. Its cabin maintains the 2+2+3 three-row seating layout, while incorporating new convenience features and Buick eConnect 3.0 connectivity technology with up to three optional displays.
Thanks to its third design update in 10 years, the 2020 Buick GL8 25S now offers a more sculpted exterior and a completely redesigned interior with improved comfort. The front end adopts the latest Buick design language with a larger grille and new headlights, and the MPV boasts redesigned bumpers as well. The GL8 25S’ cockpit includes the latest connectivity technologies, debuting a new dash with a 12-inch floating touchscreen and an 8-inch digital driver instrument panel.
GM also announced the addition of a special version of the GL8 for disabled people. This edition features power-swiveling second-row seats that can extend to the outside of the vehicle for convenient access. When passengers sit down, the seats return to their normal position and include a lock function for added safety.
The refreshed Buick GL8 ES and GL8 25S will be available for sale in the Chinese market on May 4, when final pricing will be announced. The new base and mid-range variants complement the newly launched GL8 Avenir, strengthening Buick’s dominant presence in the MPV segment with a wide variety of options for customers.

I am an owner of 2019 Chrysler Pacifica minivan. You can’t beat its overall technology, functionality, cargo capacity, and ability to carry people in comfort
A Buick minivan would be an excellent alternative, especially if it was available with Super Cruise. The more luxurious the better.
Once again GM is screwing the pooch when it comes to the United Stated market. Outside of Cevrolet and a few Buick models and GMC they are abandoning the United States market. Cadillac is pretty much gone except the high dollar Escalade. Buicks only real vehicle made for the U.S. market is the Enclave. The Cadillac CT4,CT5,XT4,XT5, and XT6 all suck. Calling the CT5 the CT5-V is an even bigger joke. It could never keep pace with the CTS-V. There is a huge whole in the market that is more like a black hole. Every thing GM makes that should be sold in the U.S. market gets sucked into the Black hole called China.
The GL8 is sitting on a 30 year old platform (U-platform). The rest of the product lineup is sits on platforms that are being phased out in the US due to age. The Buick Encore (not the GS) is on a platform meant for emerging markets (i.e. – Cheap). Buick in China has a lot of glossy products but they would not be able to hold up in the US once you give them any kind of scrutiny. The automotive press would drag GM to no end for selling them here.
As for Cadillac – I completely agree. All of the current products sold are sub-par for the segment. The Escalade looks to be the one exception. I think the rest of the lineup was developed at a time when GM had no coherent strategy for the brand. Every product that has come out in the past few years feels like a placeholder until Cadillac execs can figure out what kind of luxury brand it wants to be.
With the recent Electric vehicle unveiling and with Cadillac going fully-electric by the end of this decade, it appears that this is the strategy that could work.
I like the way the seat extends to the outside of the sliding door of the van. Be a good option for elderly and handicap customers.
