The decline in Chevrolet Traverse sales during Q1 2020 kept the vehicle in third place in its segment, behind the Ford Explorer (see Ford Explorer sales) as well as its police-duty variant (see Police Interceptor Utility sales) and the Toyota Highlander. The decrease follows a 15 percent decline in Q4 2019, a 25 percent growth in Q3 2019, slight growth in Q2 2019, and a 10 percent decline in Q1 2019. Following the Traverse were the Honda Pilot, Nissan Pathfinder, Dodge Durango, Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade, Subaru Ascent, Volkswagen Atlas (see VW Atlas sales), and the Mazda CX-9.

The GM Authority Take

The decrease in Chevrolet Traverse sales during the first quarter of 2020 is very surprising given that the vehicle is still relatively new and highly competitive in its segment. Though the 15 percent sales dip in Q4 2019 was directly explained by the 40 day-long UAW strike, it’s unclear what caused the 12 percent slide in Q1 2020.

Potential reasons could include increased competition from new entrants, such as the new Kia and Hyundai offerings or the all-new 2020 Ford Explorer, potentially indicating that the reason for the decline is product-related. Luckily, the Chevrolet Traverse will receive a refresh in the near future. That refresh, which includes new front and rear fascias as well as a few minor updates throughout the cabin, was initially planned and announced for the 2021 model year. However, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the updates have been pushed back by one model year, and will now launch for the 2022 Chevrolet Traverse.

About The Numbers

  • All percent change figures compared to Chevrolet Traverse sales for Q1 2019
  • In the United States, there were 76 selling days in Q1 2020 and 76 selling days in Q1 2019
  • For Explorer sales figures are comprised of the Ford Explorer and its police-duty variant, the Ford Police Interceptor Utility. In previous quarters, Police Interceptor Utility sales were reported as a separate line item, but Ford is now folding its sales into the Explorer line item.
