The Corvette accounted for 43 percent of the segment’s sales volume in Q1 2020, though we should note – as we usually do – that many other contenders in this segment have significantly higher price points than the Corvette, and therefore see lower sales volumes.
The premium sports car segment contracted 7.5 percent to 8,931 units in Q1 2020. As such, Corvette sales decreased less than the segment average.
The GM Authority Take
The decrease in Chevrolet Corvette sales during the first quarter of 2020 was to be expected, since the last-generation Corvette C7 has been out of production for several months while the all-new 2020 Corvette C8 wasn’t available long enough to generate any substantial sales volume as a result of the coronavirus outbreak. To wit: the C8 began arriving at dealers in March, but the COVID-19 pandemic caused production to be idled about a week after, with less than 3,000 units of the C8 produced.
Given reduced availability and the coronavirus-related troubles, it’s impressive that the Corvette managed to continue dominating its segment during the quarter. Not only did the famed Chevy sports car outsell all other competitors on an individual basis, but it came close to outselling the entire segment on a combined basis.
We expect Corvette sales to decline substantially in the short term, as long as GM production is idled at the GM Bowling Green plant, which assembles the Corvette, as well as at the GM Tonawanda Engine plant, which assembles the C8’s 6.2L V8 LT2 engine. However, once the coronavirus pandemic begins to subside, production resumes at both facilities, and the supercar becomes available at the retail level, deliveries should skyrocket due to strong demand, and higher levels of interest in the new mid-engine Corvette. We predict that, once availability matches demand, Corvette will begin to account for substantially more than half of the segment’s sales volume.
