About Cadillac CT5
The CT5 is a new luxury sedan from GM's Cadillac brand. The model will replace both the ATS and CTS Sedans in the future Cadillac product portfolio. The vehicle will be larger than the ATS yet slightly smaller than the CTS, and positioned as a D-segment offering that's slightly larger than the BMW 3/4 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class segment stalwarts.
The traditional four-door sedan body styles for the CT5 is a shoe-in. A two-door coupe is possible. A convertible is less of a possibility, and a wagon is out of the question thanks to consumers' ongoing love affair with crossovers.
The CT5 rides on an updated version of the GM Alpha platform dubbed internally as Alpha 2. It will be powered by the following engines:
- New turbo-charged 2.0L LSY I-4 TriPower as the base engine making around 250 horsepower
- Twin-turbocharged 3.0L LGW V-6 making over 400 horsepower
An ultra-high-performance CT5-V model is expected, but it's currently unknown which engine it will use. Two possibilities include the twin-turbo 4.2L LTA V8 or the supercharged 6.2L LT4 V8.
All engines will be mated to the new GM 10-speed automatic transmission.
The Cadillac CT5 will launch in North America in the third or fourth quarter of the 2019 calendar year as a 2020 model year. A China launch is expected to take place in the second or third quarter of 2019.
The CT5 will be built at the following plants:
- GM Lansing Grand River plant in Michigan to supply America, Korea, Europe and the Middle East
- Jinqiao Cadillac plant in China to supply China and Russia
Comments
At the rate this economy is going, GM had better be ready to throw in free Super Cruise to move units.
Riddle me this Batman why does a car brand make cars like ct4 and ct5 build on a drivers chassis like the alpha .A chassis meant for driving, something like super cruise seams like it don’t match but that’s just me. You’d think super cruise tech would be better suited for cruiser type sedan which Cadillac don’t make no more
SuperCruise would be well-suited for anyone taking trips (especially long ones) in their car… no matter its type.
Also, the CT4 and CT5 can both be very comfortable cruising vehicles… not everyone gets the V or the V Blackwing.
Just look at GM
It’s totally sad
They’re stuck in neutral
Not making cars and models that people really want
Corvette can’t save them
EVs won’t save them either – because they will end up making them with lackluster performance that no one will want
Plus given all the stuff going on with China they really need to pull out of China too
We don’t need to be funding China’s standard of living
Not in the market this year. Can you say coronavirus? But want to buy a GM sedan or even a station wagon (not an SUV; been there, done that) in the near future. What are the options?
Chevrolet? I own a Corvette C7. Want to seriously downsize from my full size ’08 GMC Sierra (my neighbor wants to buy). Want all wheel drive and sporty. Impala doesn’t fit and it’s end of life, not to be replaced. Everything else is budget, not remotely sporty and definitely not all wheel drive. Unless I missed something.
Liked the Buick line up but the Opel contract ends and they’re gone I think in ’21. Buick is wonderfully priced. Especially considering they’re all wheel drive. Nicely styled though they won’t hook European sedan fans. Performance is ho-hum but I guess I could live with it. Not going to boulevard race it.
That leaves Cadillac. Getting pricey especially considering how bloated options are compared to other modest brands offering the same. Yeah, we can say the same for Mercedes, BMW and Audi. It’s like buyers in the class expect to get gouged because high price some how means super tech, super luxury or super performance. Doesn’t the CT4 use a retuned GM parts bin truck engine? Yeah, I’ll pay double for that!
I try to like the Cadillacs but their squarish exterior design cues lack the classic design cues of Mercedes, BMW and even Audi. Cadillac’s looks don’t age well. Building a Cadillac with the combination of interior style and performance has cost me fistfuls of hair I pulled out in the process.
Coronavirus is going to squeeze GM’s bottom line so hard my expectations of any greatness coming out soon is pretty minimal. Guess I’ll be holding onto my truck until the wheels fall off!
Wow!!
Well said.
I also have problems with GM having very little in the form of fun performance outside of Corvette in the pipeline.
XT4-V would be nice if they would care to build it.
Blazer SS if it’s possible with a more powerful engine that would be great too.
I think GM is going to make the mistake of rushing into electrics when the public is going to be more interested in continuing to buy internal combustion engines for at least the next 10 years.
This may lead to the demise of GM or GM selling to another manufacturer. I wouldn’t be surprised if a chinese company ultimately takes over GM.
Any news about the CT4? Or will that come when production is back online?
The residual must be trash to have a “special offer lease” for $704.
Why do you think Cadillac XTS V-Sports can be had for so cheap? It’s a Cadillac with G8 GXP speeds and MagnaRide, for the same cost as… a decade-old G8. And that’s just the XTS, which shockingly isn’t the worst of the bunch.
Let’s look at a possible “to-do” list for GM.
Start by acknowledging the obvious
Maintaining truck superiority.
Silverado and Sierra must be allowed to continue to be the very best of the industry
Tahoe / Yukon / Escalade need to also continue to be the best that they can
The current updates are appropriate and competitive in their segment
Offer one small to medium-size SUV from Chevrolet that will hit 60 in under 5 Seconds
Same for Buick
Bring back sedans (besides Cadillac)
One for Chevy and one for Buick
Rear wheel drive/all-wheel drive sedan
These need to be desirable vehicles that actually compete with vehicles from Kia /Hyundai – because these companies are now eating GM’s lunch
I understand that Pontiac G8 failed
But GM needs to build sedans that people will buy in terms of styling and content and competitive price
GM needs to get away from their internal dictum which does not allow any vehicle from any other division to outshine the similar vehicle at Cadillac
Slow down the transition to electric
