The second generation of the Chevrolet Onix has just officially launched in Colombia, which is the first South American country outside of Mercosur – the trade union made up of Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay – to receive the redesigned subcompact. In fact, General Motors took the opportunity to reveal the new RS hatchback variant of the Onix, of which pictures had leaked at the end of last year.
Although GM had planned a launch event that would also cover the rest of the countries in the region – including Chile, Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia – due to the national quarantine decreed in the country to stop the COVID-19 pandemic, the company changed the initial format of the event that ended up becoming the first virtual launch made in Colombia.
“The new Onix is a global development, and the result of our best engineers’ efforts on various continents who understood the needs of each market. Therefore, the main product values are design, safety, performance and a higher level of connectivity,” said Director of Sales and Operations for GM in Colombia, Raúl Mier, during the live launch. “We are sure that the new Chevrolet Onix is going to be a success in Colombia,” he added.
Like the previous-generation model, the new Chevrolet Onix arrives in Colombia in its two body styles. The Onix sedan is the main offering for the country and will be sold in three trim levels: LT, LTZ and Premier. Meanwhile, the five-door hatchback maintains its local positioning above the sedan, being offered only in Premier and exclusive, sporty RS trims.
All versions of the 2020 Onix arriving in the country are equipped with an efficient turbocharged, 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine that develops 115 horsepower and 118 lb-ft of torque. GM’s eighth-generation Ecotec engine block can be mated to either a five-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic.
The all-new Chevrolet Onix, based on the GEM platform, is now available at the brand’s dealerships across Colombia, with a generous list of technology and safety features. As in Brazil – the country from which it is imported – the Onix will be sold alongside the first-generation model, positioned in the upper part of the subcompact segment. The starting prices are as follows:
- Onix Sedan LT: $46,990,000 COP (about $11,950 USD at the current exchange rate)
- Onix Sedan LTZ: $53,990,000 COP ($13,750 USD)
- Onix Sedan Premier: $60,990,000 COP ($15,500 USD)
- Onix Hatchback RS: $55,290,000 COP ($14,050 USD)
- Onix Hatchback Premier: $59,290,000 COP ($15,100 USD)

Where would this fit in size wise in the US market? It has a nice looking interior.
Seeing the economy is about to take a dump, Chevy probably will import these lil bad boys here…
Size wise it’s between a Cruze and Sonic or the same size as the 82-90′ Cavalier.
So super tiny. Can’t believe they killed the Impala, again…
have a 2019 impala lt 3.6 very happy so far
My uncle has the Midnight Edition 2019. He loves it.
Good looking car and inside and out. Just put a nice cover on the 1.3 engine . Onix could sell well in the US I would think ?
I agree with John. Spend a couple of COP and put a cover on that engine!
I also agree with Kevin & Paul. I have a red 2019 Impala LT 3.6, love it.
$12,000 for a car that’s nicer than my $13,000 2017 Spark? Seriously, where do I sign? That gorgeous interior puts my Spark to shame.
