New Cadillac Vehicles Feature Convenient Cruise Control Trick

The term ‘luxury’ is described by Webster’s dictionary as a state of great ease or comfort. In line with this definition, the best luxury cars are not only ultra-comfortable, but also work to make the driver’s life as easy as possible when they are out on the road.

The latest version of the Cadillac cruise control system serves as a great example of how luxury brands go to lengths to ensure their vehicles improve the lives of their owners, rather than only serving as status symbols.

Like most cruise control systems, the system found in Cadillac’s latest products can be adjusted in 1 mph / 1 kph increments by toggling the cruise control switch either up or down. Unlike other systems, though, the switch has two detents. While the first detent will increase or decrease the speed by 1 mph / 1 kph, the second detent, accessed by pushing a bit harder on the switch, will increase or decrease the cruise speed in 5 mph / 5 kph increments.

Only Cadillac vehicles with the new steering wheel design, or previous-generation steering wheel design, are able to adjust speed in 5 mph or 5 kph increments. The new steering wheel design is standard equipment on all 2019 and newer Cadillac models. A picture of it can be seen below for those readers who may not be familiar with the newer design.

The previous Cadillac steering wheel design, which also has this bonus convenience feature, is pictured below. It was present in the old Cadillac ATS, Cadillac CTS, Cadillac XTS, and Cadillac SRX models.

While certainly not a big deal, nor very tech-forward, this little-known feature may prove to be a game-changer for Cadillac owners who use their vehicle’s cruise control frequently. No longer will they have to mash on the cruise control switch to gain or lower their speed. A simple press a bit harder on the toggle and they will get concise -/+5 mph or kph speed adjustments. Easy!

  1. I had a 2013 VW CC that had cruise that could toggle up/down by 1 or 5 mph, so not really anything new or “trick” here.

My VW blew a hose everytime I hit the accelerator too hard, and I didn’t even need to buy it jewelry afterwards.

  2. Yeah….so my 17 Chevy Malibu’s Cruise will climb or descend by 5mph when holding the cruise control button up or down.

    1. Different kind of press. The Cadillacs in question need a single press for increments of one, and a long press for increments of five. This occasionally applies to some GM models, but others need to have the button to be held down.

  3. Nothing new or revolutionary about it. It’s clearly documented in my 2013 XTS owner’s manual. A nice feature!

  4. Pretty sure this was available on most recent GM vehicles except instead of a further detent like the power window auto feature, you just hold down the button for half a sec and it’ll increment by 5.

  5. Since you’re mentioning SRX, CTS, and ATS, the ELR had the same “old” steering wheel design that allowed this, too. Handy once you realize it’s possible.

  6. I thought Cadillac was moving away from actual mechanical linkage between the shifter and the trans? What model still has the “old” shifter?

I personally would much rather have the old, mechanical kind but what gives?!

    1. 2020 CT4 still has the old style shifter.

  11. Whats more noteworthy is the vehicles ability to apply brakes/or gas with a hold of said 2nd “detents” to the desired speed. That. That is article of luxury finger pressing worth writing.. since 2013..
