Competitive Sales Comparison

Fourth quarter 2019 GMC Sierra sales place the full-size pickup truck in fourth place in its competitive set by overall sales volume. The Sierra trailed the Ford F-Series (see Ford F-series sales) in first place (by a wide margin of over 165,000 units), the Ram Pickup (see Ram Pickup sales) in second place, and its own corporate cousin – the Chevrolet Silverado – in third place (see Chevy Silverado sales). The Sierra outsold all other segment contenders, including the Toyota Tundra and Nissan Titan.

However, the Sierra’s two percent increase in sales volume allowed it to slightly outperform the segment and all other contenders except the Ram Pickup. The GMC saw segment share remain stable during the quarter at 10 percent, compared to the 35 percent commanded by the F-Series, 26 percent by the Ram Pickup, and 24 percent by the Silverado. The Toyota Tundra and Nissan Titan held 4 and 1 percent, respectively.

The full-size pickup truck segment expanded an average of 1 percent to 670,307 units in Q4 2019.

The GM Authority Take

GMC Sierra sales continued to grow during the fourth quarter of 2019, delivering a stable performance after a rebound in sales volume in the third quarter. What’s impressive is that Sierra sales managed to post an increase in sales volume, despite the 40 day-long UAW strike. The walkout resulted in significant reductions in availability of the Sierra (as well as many other GM models) at the retail level during the quarter.

We should also note that GMC offered some appealing Sierra incentives during the final quarter of 2019. In fact, GMC Sierra discounts in Q4 2019 included a 15 percent discount for last-gen HD models in December, 20 percent discount for the new 1500 models in November, and an 18 percent discount for Sierra 1500 models in October.

It’s also worth noting that the all-new 2020 Sierra HD only began to trickle into dealers at the end of the quarter in limited quantities.

We expect the GMC Sierra to hit its stride from a sales volume standpoint in the first quarter of 2020, as a result of better availability of half-ton models and improved availability of the new Heavy Duty models. We initially expected this to be the case for the fourth quarter of 2019, but the UAW strike prevented this from being the case.
