Competitive Sales Comparison

After an unexpected increase in sales during the second quarter of 2019, Cadillac XTS sales fell sharply in the third quarter, with the drop continuing into the fourth quarter. The discontinued model’s sales decreased 79 percent in the U.S. and 73 percent in Canada. This large decrease allowed the Lincoln Continental (see Lincoln Continental sales) to surpass the XTS for the best-selling spot in the segment. All told, the XTS sold 1,062 units, or about 750 units less than the Continental. According to our sister publication, Ford Authority, Ford will discontinue the Continental at the end of its lifecycle.

The Acura RLX remained a distant third in the segment, losing 57 percent of its sales volume.

The GM Authority Take

The last Cadillac XTS for North America rolled off the line in October 2019. As such, it’s unsurprising to see sales of the large sedan decline continuously until any remaining inventory has been liquidated.

In fact, customers in the U.S. and Canada who are looking for a large sedan will soon be left without a model to choose from in the Cadillac portfolio, as the automaker has discontinued both the XTS and the slightly-larger and more luxurious CT6.

  1. OT: I still don’t see how GM viewed the CT6 as a failure. Considering big luxury sedans will always be low volume. The CT6 has done well. The car has a commanding presence. Every time I see one I check it out. I can only imagine how good the re-fresh looks in person. As far as the XTS goes I dont see why GM could not continue to make it and the impala. There are sorry FWD platforms which underpin many of their CUVs. I do not see how they could not make it work. Well I guess more sales to the Asian car companies.

    1. What makes you think that the CT6 “has done well”? 8K last year. A total of only about 37K have sold over its 4 year life. (Exactly 4 years in fact, March 2016 being its first month on the market) The car has been discounted and lease-incentived for most of its life. As of last weekend, there are still 3 V -Blackwings still for sale in my area and all with discounts of $5k+. The hundreds of millions spent designing, prototyping, tooling, testing, and certifying the CT6 will likely never be recouped.

As for the XTS: IT’S 8 YEARS OLD! How long do you think any automaker can build a product with virtually no change? Sales have been slipping for years until most now go to rental fleets. This applies to Impala too.

  2. The main reason of declining sales is simple
20 year customers stuck with other Styx’s and
Other models with faulty non recalled 1600.00
    Recalls on headlamps!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Makes no sense that GM dropped both the XTS and the CT6 at the same time. While CT6 sales were not bad, I would venture to say that had GM kept it and dropped the frump FWD luxury sedan, all of the XTS business would’ve migrated to CT6 and then presented a much better business case for keeping the beautiful big RWD sedan around. Instead, I see the business going to Lincoln instead which may help save the Continental from the same fate.

    1. Wow. That’s a lot of wishful thinking and uninformed supposition.

  4. People currently driving the CTS have the Ct5 to look forward when either trading in or having their leases coming due. People like myself currently driving a CT6 will have nothing to look forward to.

    1. Looks like GM would rather you buy a S Class or maybe a 7 Series. There is also the Audi 8, Lexus LS, Infinity Q. And the Geniuses cars…. All of which are still available and not canceled. Happily none of these makes have any plans to cancel there big cars. So there it is. Thanks GM for opening up our choices!!!!

  5. Very Disappointed
    I love my XTS
I’m trying to justify buying one of the remaining ones!

  6. I can see why , I have a 14 XTS, after doing research on the car itself, THE CUE SYSTEM IS JUNK, everyone i know that has , it has spider webbed or stopped working and GM wouldn’t stand behind them, I will never buy another Cadillac.

  7. More bad decision making at GM. I get letting XTS go, but also killing CT6 and total decapitating Cadillac large cars not so smart. I am sure that on some ledger some where it looked like a wonderfully incredible choice, but the real world dosent have a line item to compute in to the decision.

  8. They really should give the CT6 a few months of sales without the XTS around.

  9. A NEW MARKETING division can make the difference. Cadillac is continiously dropping their fantastic styled models. They don’t give time to develop the brand and give it a big dealer network for instance in Europe. I’ll take the ATS models as an example. It was THE model to concquer Europe…, but did not get the time to do so ! I’m driving the ATS coupe here in Europe and get so many headturning reactions, because this is an almost unique model in Europe and could have been a big competitor to Mercedes and BMW if only given more time. But it dit not get the chance. Thats a shame for Cadillac !

  10. Man, I get the XTS getting the axe, but the CT6 is so nice looking! I have to agree with the comment above about marketing. Buick and Caddy marketing are awful. Seriously bad… as in insulting bad. Why can’t GM just show the cars to the public with information included as to why their cars should be considered. Instead they try catchy tunes, fast cutaways, then deep discounts when it doesn’t work. If I go buy another new Audi today, I know it’s not going to be on a big sale the next day killing my resale. Treat Caddy like Audi treats their cars and customers… what’s the worst that can happen?

  11. My biggest complaint would be the failure of the Cue screens. For the price of the Cadallic you would think it would have a system that was top of the line. Love my Cadillac but having to replace the Cue screen is very upsetting. Happens I was navigating when mine went out. Very dangerous!!! Not to mention the cost of the system to replace is $1500.00. Very uspet!!!
