We should note that Lexus RX sales now include the two-row RX and the three-row RXL, with the three-row RXL being a rival to the new Cadillac XT6. As such, a more apt comparison would be to pit XT5 and XT6 sales against those of the RX.

2017 Cadillac XT5 Platinum Interior Review 007

The GM Authority Take

Cadillac XT5 sales in Q4 2019 underperformed the segment, a circumstance that we attribute directly to the UAW strike. The 40-day-long walkout resulted in a cessation of production of the XT5 and the GM Spring Hill plant in Tennessee, causing inventories at the retail level to dry up. With little choice at dealers, customers seem to have opted for other models.

The XT5 received a midcycle enhancement (aka refresh) for the 2020 model year. The current XT5 is a highly-competitive model, but has fallen behind its adversaries in terms of exterior styling and trim level packaging/configuration. Specifically, rival offerings feature more delineated trim elements, including the ability to have “luxury” or “sport” styling, whereas the current XT5 only offers one styling set that skews toward a luxury appearance over a sporty one. The 2020 XT5 refresh addresses these matters by implementing Cadillac’s Y trim level strategy, delivering Luxury, Premium Luxury and Sport trims.

In addition, we also posit that the new Cadillac XT4 has cannibalized some sales from the XT5. In the fourth quarter, Cadillac XT4 sales totaled 8,895 units, which more than makes up for the roughly 2,400 fewer XT5 units sold during the timeframe. In addition, the Cadillac XT6 accounted for 7,169 deliveries during the quarter, with some of those sales likely coming from customers who would have otherwise purchased the XT5, thereby resulting in further cannibalization of Cadillac’s midsize, two-row crossover offering.

Ultimately, sales of the Cadillac crossover lineup grew about 22 percent during the quarter.

  1. One has to wonder whether the lack of a performance model for Cadillac’s XT5 as making the LF3 rated at 420 hp (313 kW; 426 PS) of power at 5750 rpm and 430 lbâ‹…ft (583 Nâ‹…m) of torque at 3500-4500 rpm with AWD would give buyers something else to think about.

  2. We are enjoying our 2018 xt5 very much But comparing to a 2020 packages could still be better , interior trim could be brought up a notch too a higher level ( less cheap plastic ) , better choice in standard engine ( 4cyl hp is not enough ) better interior choices ( very poor to include optional equipment s to interior colors—–and charge $$$$$$ more. IMO
