Competitive Sales Comparison

Cadillac XT4 sales continued to rise during the fourth quarter of 2019, as awareness of the model grew in the marketplace. The XT4 was outsold by the Lexus NX and Acura RDX by a factor of two. However, the small Caddy did manage to outsell the all-new Audi Q3, which saw an impressive growth of nearly 300 percent.

The Cadillac XT4 also outsold the BMW X1 and X2, which are the same vehicle with different bodies, as well as its corporate cousin, the Buick Envision (see Buick Envision sales), the 2020 Lincoln Corsair, whose sales figures include remaining Lincoln MKC sales. In addition, the XT4 outsold the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class, which is getting an all-new model shortly, as well as the GLA-based Infiniti QX30.

The GM Authority Take

The ongoing growth in Cadillac XT4 sales is very welcome news. The fact that the GM luxury brand entered a highly-competitive segment and now occupies one of the leading spots shows that consumers are embracing the new product. By comparison, the RDX, NX, Q3, GLA-Class and X1 have long-established positions in the segment, along with the advantage of significantly higher awareness, having gone through at least one generational change-over in the U.S.

Additionally, we posit that XT4 sales would have been even higher had the GM Fairfax factory in Kansas City – where the XT4 is produced – not been impacted by the UAW strike, which lasted 40 days during the fourth quarter. The walkout prevented any units of the XT4 from being produced and shipped to dealers, thereby limited choice at the retail (dealer) level.

Going forward, we expect XT4 sales volume to continue increasing in the 2020 calendar year, so long as supply and availability can keep up. Supply will likely be negatively impacted thanks to the ongoing Coronavirus outbreak, which saw GM pause production at all plants in North America, and even beyond. In addition, XT4 sales should increase in various global markets, as the vehicle launches in South Korea, Russia, and Europe. Most recently, Cadillac announced that it will introduce the XT4 in Europe with an all-new, market-specific turbo-diesel engine.
