Competitive Sales Comparison

Buick Regal sales performance puts the model in third and last place in its competitive set yet again during Q4 2019, with the results mirroring those seen during Q3 2019 and Q2 2019. The Kia Stinger outsold the Buick Regal for a second-place finish, while the Acura TLX outsold the Regal and Stinger combined for a first place finish.

The GM Authority Take

The slump in fourth-quarter 2019 Buick Regal sales should not come as a surprise given current market trends, wherein customers continue to migrate towards crossovers and away from sedans. However, slumping Regal sales aren’t just the result of consumers preferring utilities over sedans, for two specific reasons:

  1. The Buick Regal is not a sedan. Instead, it’s offered as the Regal Sportback and Regal TourX ruggedized wagon. As such, the Regal family should be protected from the ongoing slump in sedan sales, at least theoretically.
  2. Buick Regal sales volume does not even come close to that of the Acura TLX, which is a traditional sedan. Meanwhile, TLX sales actually grew (albeit slightly), which shows that there is still demand for sedans, and that consumers prefer Acura’s offering over the Regal Sportback.

We suspect that the Regal underperformed the segment so significantly as a result of availability issues. In fact, it appears that fewer Regals are being shipped from the Opel Russelsheim plant than before.

Going forward, we expect Buick Regal sales to continue decreasing, as the vehicle will be discontinued after the 2020 model year.

  1. Well what do you expect with-

    1) A CEO that could care a less about this vehicle.
    2) That sold off Opel/PSA group
    3) That refuses to advertise this unique vehicle in Buick’s lineup
    4) That you never find in most GMC/Buick dealer lots
    5) That doesn’t fit in with Mr’s Wokes Triple Zero agenda

    1. Buick only competes with Acura and a bastard Kia? Regal is a fine car that never got properly promoted. As a Chevrolet it might have dented Sentra and Fusion giving The General a real winner.
Buick being unable to move a sedan in the US tells me a lot about the health of the brand.

  2. And another crime was that the 2020 Buick Regal was just chosen as the “Best Midsize Car” in the J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Survey. (That’s AHEAD of the VW Passat and the Toyota Camry.) So GM does one of the few things it knows how – cut the vehicle in the US and – assuming you can find one on dealers’ lots – throw big discounts on the hood.

  3. It can’t sell when Buick dealers won’t stock any. Possibly dealers are afraid that it will be hard
to get parts and GM customers are not fond of a German built car, else they would be buying a BMW.

Initially it sounded like a great car, especially the GS.

  4. Really is a shame. This generation Regal was the best in decades, they really wasted an opportunity with it. Something I like to call the “CT6 Effect” – build a quality vehicle, don’t advertise it, make it progressively better, and then kill it after a few years. Score one for GM.

  5. You can’t expect to sell a car, or any product for that matter, if you don’t ADVERTISE it !!! The lack of advertising support is, in my opinion, a major a component of failure in the Cadillac CTS, CT6 and now Buick Regal. I don’t recall the last time I saw an ad for a Buick Regal.

  7. The Regal is a DB Dead Buick . I agree with other comments I never see all that many ads for the Regal. Once in a while a Buick ad will show a glance at all the Buick models. Buick is concentrating on SUVs & soon will have a fourth one on the lot.
This certainly is not your fathers Buick any more.

  8. I really can not add to any of the comments. GM does not talk to the people, just the YES men. Prime example is also the HD truck. Ugly.

  9. I have yet to see a single Regal Tour X on the road
