The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and General Motors are recalling certain 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 pickup trucks due to a problem with the vehicles’ brake calipers.
The defect: According to a NHTSA filing, the bolts used to attach the front and/or rear brake calipers on the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 may have not been heat-treated during the manufacturing process. Without the added strength from the heat-treating process, the bolts may break under load, which can reduce braking performance and cause other damage to the vehicle.
The hazards: GM says broken caliper bolts can reduce the trucks’ braking performance and/or interfere with the wheel rotation, increasing the risk of a crash.
The fix: GM dealers will inspect and replace the caliper bolts with proper, heat-treated bolts. These repairs will be done at no cost to the owner.
Affected components: brakes.
Affected vehicles:
- 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
- 2020 GMC Sierra 1500
Number of affected vehicles: a total of 20,352 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks are affected by this recall.
