Competitive Sales Comparison

Despite the decline, GMC Yukon sales continued to enjoy a solid position in their segment in the fourth quarter of 2019 in the U.S. That said, the decrease in volume prompted the vehicle to slip from second to third place in its competitive set, as the Ford Expedition (see running Ford Expedition sales) surpassed the Yukon for the first place position in the segment (see running Chevrolet Tahoe sales). Combining sales of the Tahoe and Suburban (in the same way as the Ford Expedition) results in the two Chevrolet models outselling the Expedition (31,328 Tahoe/Suburban deliveries vs. 24,267 Expedition sales).

GMC Yukon sales accounted for 24 percent segment share, behind the 28 percent commanded by the Ford Expedition and combined 36 percent for the Tahoe/Suburban. Taking into account the Tahoe, Suburban and Yukon, GM enjoyed a 60 percent segment share during the quarter.

The full-size mainstream SUV segment contracted 3 percent to 86,702 units in Q4 2019.

The GM Authority Take

The GMC Yukon sold roughly 3,000 fewer units than the Ford Expedition during the fourth quarter of 2019, enabling the Ford to surpass it in sales volume. Even so, the fact that this took place when the Yukon is one of the oldest vehicles in the segment while also being constrained in supply due to the 40-day-long UAW strike speaks highly to the strength of the nameplate and the high competitiveness levels of the current product.

Looking ahead, the Yukon, along with the Tahoe and Suburban, are being overhauled (re-engineered and redesigned) for the 2021 model year. As such, we expect the all-new 2021 GMC Yukon to further improve GM’s already-strong position in the highly-lucrative full-size SUV space, once supply allows it to do so. GM’s full-size SUVs – including the Yukon, Tahoe/Suburban and Escalade, are believed to be the biggest drivers of revenue and profit for the automaker.

However, competition is heating up. On the one hand, the still relatively new Ford Expedition is doing very well in the segment, posting a very healthy 71 percent growth for the fourth quarter. On the other, new entrants are coming for the space, including the upcoming Jeep Wagoneer.

  1. Look at the price of a Yukon. You need a Small Mortgage to buy one. Their list price is at the same level some Americans make for the entire year! Lower the price you’ll sell a lot more then leaving the price where it is your stats will remain at selling 3000 less units then the Ford Expedition! Not everyone is a millionaire there ae more average people who want a nice SUV but not at the price of a Yukon. I’ve always liked GM products over Ford and Chrysler but now GM is becoming untouchable. I’m not the only American feeling this pain. You want to go bankrupt again keep raising your prices. You make to many model choices as well. You did that before your last bankruptcy and now you’re doing it again. Cut back hold back either you sell a plain Jane model or you sell a Yukon loaded but cut back on the profit….a little less get more attitude. You’ll profit in the end.!!!!!!!
