Competitive Sales Comparison

The decline in GMC Acadia sales in the final quarter of 2019 comes after a record-setting sales performance in the first quarter of 2019 and healthy increases in Q2 and Q3. The Q4 2019 performance places the midsize crossover in 13th place in its competitive set in terms of overall sales volume out of 21 competitors.

The model was outsold by the segment-leading Toyota Highlander, Jeep Grand Cherokee (see Jeep Grand Cherokee sales), Ford Explorer (see Ford Explorer sales), Ford Edge (see Ford Edge sales), Toyota 4Runner, the Acadia’s corporate cousin – the Chevrolet Traverse, which rides on a longer version of the same C1 vehicle architecture used by the Acadia (see Chevy Traverse sales), the Hyundai Santa Fe, the Honda Pilot, Kia Sorento, the Acadia’s other corporate cousin – the Chevrolet Blazer (see Chevrolet Blazer sales), Subaru Ascent, and Volkswagen Atlas (see VW Atlas sales).

However, the Acadia outsold all other segment contenders, including the Kia Telluride, Nissan Murano, Nissan Pathfinder, Hyundai Palisade, Dodge Durango (see Dodge Durango sales), Honda Passport, Mazda CX-9 (see Mazda CX-9 sales), and Mitsubishi Outlander.

Overall, the Acadia saw a segment share of 3 percent, which is significantly less than the 11 percent share occupied by the segment best-selling Toyota Highlander and Jeep Grand Cherokee, which took 10 percent of the segment. Additionally, the 23 percent drop in GMC Acadia sales puts the nameplate way behind the 8 percent average segment growth rate.

The mainstream crossover segment, comprised of crossover SUVs with a starting price in the vicinity of $30,000, expanded 8 percent to 558,730 units in Q4 2019.

The GM Authority Take

As stated, the decline in GMC Acadia sales is disappointing after the nameplate experienced significant growth in the third quarter of 2019. We attribute the drop in Q4 to the 40 day-long UAW strike, which stopped production of many GM vehicles – including the Acadia, sapping dealer inventories and curbing sales volumes.

Once inventories recover, the GMC Acadia is well-positioned to take advantage of the ongoing shift in consumer buying dynamics wherein buyers continue to switch to crossovers from sedans, and recover this slump. We believe the UAW strike may have impeded availability at the dealer level, influencing the decline in sales.

Meanwhile, the 2020 Acadia refresh has now launched across North America, including the United States market. The enhancement brings redesigned front and rear ends, along with a new 2.0L turbo engine, a 9-speed transmission, a new AT4 trim level in place of the outgoing All Terrain, and various enhancements inside the cabin and in-vehicle technologies.

That said, the already-competitive segment in which the Acadia competes is getting even more crowded with all-new offerings, including the Kia Telluride, which went on sale during the second quarter, and the Hyundai Palisade, which went on sale during the third quarter. The vehicles are half a size class larger than the Acadia, but still fulfill the general requirements of a three-row mainstream crossover. GM does have vehicles the size of the Telluride and Palisade in non-U.S. markets, including the new three-row Chevrolet Blazer and Chinese-market Buick Enclave. Currently, the vehicles have only been announced for China.

About GMC Acadia

The GMC Acadia is a mid-size crossover utility vehicle (CUV). It is the largest GMC crossover currently offered, slotting above the compact GMC Terrain.

The current model was introduced for the 2017 model year and represents the second generation of the Acadia nameplate. It rides on the GM C1 platform shared with the Cadillac XT5. It is expected that the upcoming, future Chevrolet Blazer will ride on the same platform. Meanwhile, the second-generation Chevrolet Traverse and Buick Enclave use a longer-wheelbase variant of the same architecture.

Compared to its first-generation predecessor, the second-gen Acadia is an all-new vehicle that is one size segment smaller, while also being sleeker, more modern, more tech-laden and much lighter. Despite its smaller size, the second-gen Acadia manages to retain three rows of seating and generous cargo space.

For the 2018 model year, the Acadia got a new color, automatic heated steering wheel in place of the manual heated steering wheel, Tire Fill Alert, some new wheels on the SLT-1 All Terrain model, as well as broader availability of the 3.6L V-6 engine and All-Terrain package.

For the 2019 model year, the Acadia receives several new colors, Express Up and Down window controls for the driver's-side controls as standard on the SLE-2 and SLT-1 trims, the expanded availability of the Ebony interior color with the All-Terrain package on the SLT trim level and the introduction of the Acadia Black Edition.

A midcycle refresh arrives for the 2020 model year that delivers updated styling, the new GM 9-speed automatic transmission, a new turbo-charged 2.0L I-4 LSY engine, a new AT4 model that replaces the Acadia All Terrain, interior updates, and various other improvements.

The GMC Acadia is built exclusively at the GM Spring Hill factory in Tennessee operated by GM USA.

  1. UAW strike hit the supply hard.

But the refresh didn’t do anything but make the exterior of the Acadia ugly. Not much effort was put into the interior and it shows.

I don’t think the recovery will be very swift for the Acadia. There many good competitors out there. Why waste time with the Acadia?

  2. Oh dear sounds like it’s time to discontinue it!

  3. Supplies are down. It was two years ago we got ours and we had a number of Denali models to choose from. I just looked to see what deals were out there out of curiosity.

Most dealers have slim pickings and the deals are much smaller than what we got.

I think the strike has hurt the inventories but also the good rebates on the 2019/sold a lot of Acadias last year.

I am not a fan of the new nose but at the auto show this week there were many checking out the new model.

The only new things I like are the new wheels and the HUD. Nothing else worth trading up yet.

  4. The GMC Acadia was making good sales until the strike. Although the strike is over and with a decent MCE I see sales will be lower because of a looming economic slow down caused by coronavirus fears.

  5. not surprising with all the competition they will all probably raise prices too many choices not enough sales the days of having something popular and selling oodles of them are long gone unless it is pick-up

  6. Great overall vehicle to be honest. Too bad about that dowdy interior.
GM needs to finally recognize that there are a lot of Competition out there in these Segments and their interiors are far superior to GM’s at this point. Not sure why the updated Acadia, Terrain, and Nox didn’t get all new interiors.
Lets all remember that the first Gen Acadia, Traverse, and Enclave all got an all new interior (all much better) when they received an MCE.
Not sure how GM hasn’t realized how far behind in each segment they are in the interior department.
I know I keep harping about interiors but people maybe just do not realize just how crucial they are for final purchase decisions. I mean Kia is basically running circles right now on GM vehicles. Let that sink in for a minute.
Please GM step it up ASAP!!!

    1. they play it cheap on the interiors hoping there loyal customers wont look at the competition or even do research online. just look at the new body pick-ups compared to the competition.naive and profit driven

I agree with you. A lot of us are just GM fans that pretty much do not look at other vehicles to purchase.
That is what GM Banks on but that won’t grow their Brands. Not even us the GM fans can say that their interiors are just not up to par. Not even close.
The New Tahoe, Yukon (even though the Beancounters won the battle to have two seperate interiors that I still think is stupid) C8, and Escalade show me that GM has the talent to make great interiors that ONLY cost cutting decisions are behind these lack luster current vehicle interiors on sale right now.

    2. The interiors are not bad. They do have real aluminum trim not plastic and real wood.

The problem is they really say little about it and some how GMC finds ways of making real wood look fake.

The segment is competitive and this is one of the more expensive models. You are not going to be a top 5 with higher prices but you will make the same money o. Less volume.

The nose job did not improve the styling.

The only real Worthy addition to this was the HUD.

They really need to better market the electronic suspension. It really makes a difference in this model. It was worth every penny.

  7. I wonder if part of it is the new push button shifter . If you read some of the reviews on line or in print almost all point to the poor looking addition of it . It’s a good idea but looks tacked on , like an afterthought .
Buyers in the market during the strike are lost sales for sure . But like many GM needs to stop cutting costs on their interiors across the board . That’s were you spend your time and to compete in this segment they have to do better .

  8. How is the push button shifter affecting Terrain/Acadia sales? N
