North American production of the Cadillac CT6 luxury sedan is set to end this month, and unfortunately, General Motors won’t be importing the four-door from China.
In a recent exclusive news item posted by our sister publication, Cadillac Society, Cadillac President Steve Carlisle confirmed that the automaker currently had no plans to import the Cadillac CT6 from China for sale in North America. Thus, it looks as though the fate of the CT6 in the U.S. and Canada (the CT6 is not offered for the Mexican market) is more or less sealed, as importation from China was one of the last remaining solutions to keep to CT6 on sale in North America.
Another possible solution would be moving North American CT6 production from the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant in Michigan to some other North American facility. However, Carlisle confirmed that that too was not in the cards.
Back in November of 2018, General Motors announced that North American production of the Cadillac CT6 would come to an end in June of 2019. However, Carlisle and several other GM execs subsequently walked back on that announcement, saying the North American production of the CT6 would in fact continue.
However, we now know that the Cadillac CT6 is indeed set to depart North America this year. Following confirmation that the CT6 was set to get the axe in January of 2020, Cadillac extended production for just a few weeks, and as it stands now, North American production of the four-door will end later this month.
For reference, the Cadillac CT6 is Caddy’s current flagship sedan model. Once it departs, Cadillac will have just two sedan models in its lineup, specifically the Cadillac CT4 and Cadillac CT5, given the Cadillac XTS is now in the dustbin as well.

What has become typical GM, instead of making improvements and giving worthwhile products the advertisements they need to make them known and relevant, they get killed off.
Chevy Impala and Cruze, Cadillac CT6, Buick LaCrosse, etc. One of the biggest flaws that GM cars had were the interiors. Each vehicle had some resemblance to interiors in other GM products. If they invested more in the interiors and made some actual “Sport” versions of some of the cars, they would be more interesting. I like the turn around that GM is finally doing with its money makers now ( large SUVs and trucks). Wish they had took this route much sooner.
Hopefully they import parts from China for existing holders… The 2020 v series in my mind is a collectors item. The car is divine.
Imagine Cadillac without a genuine Full size American luxury sedan! A sad day, and the end of an American legend. To paraphrase an old Corvette ad – They’ll never write songs about SUVs. Move on, nothing to see here.
Wanna know one of the saddest details to the CT6 story?
Under De Nysschen’s strategy, the CT6 was supposed to be the MIDSIZE Cadillac sedan.
There were plans for a true flagship sedan on the LWB Omega platform. It was aborted as a part with the Omega platform at Hamtramk.
A REAL big daddy Caddy we’ll never get to see.
This means Cadillac was supposed to get a lineup that was half-size larger than the competition in each segment. It would’ve been a true return to form for Cadillac. Now we might never see it.
That would have been amazing, there would have been 2 lengths of Cadillac sedans for everyone here to hate and not buy, what an amazing future……
Imagine a Cadillac built in corner-cutting, sloppy-QC, contaminated-food products China, rather than America. “Standard of the World” indeed.
Imagine CT6 with Escalade interior!
Instant collector car.
I am truely sorry to see that you are going to stop production on the CT6 thats thee only flagship cadillac big sadan i thought you were going to make A CT8 bigger than the CT6
This is really too bad. First, too bad they are not continuing the car built in the USA. Second, too bad they won’t at lease consider bringing it here from China, although not the most popular thing to do. But it’s really sad because, IMO, this is the best looking “Cadillac” since the 2011 DTS was stopped.
This is what happens when you refuse to advertise a car. Now everyone, all together now:
“How could such an incredible car fail so miserably??”
GM. That’s how,
I am really disappointed about the CT6’s disappearance from North America, I’m even more disappointed about how little they’ve made use the Omega platform and the Blackwing engine.
This is the only Cadillac that has the looks and performance. It’s a shame for all the loyal people who want their Escala,Eldorado, and Ciel!
It becomes more clear and obvious why JDN parted ways with instant gratification GM.
Total mismanagement of what is supposed to be a luxury marque.
Gary
JDN was trying to turn Cadillac into a German clone. Completely separated from GM. Soon he would have been:
– Dropping the Escalade from Cadillacs line up.
– Partnering with Toyota to build a sports car.
– Had Cadillac put its name on a line of work vans
– Finally, start buying outdated Frontier platforms from Nissan, to design a Cadillac pickup truck.
Going back to Roger Smith, the problem wasn’t developing models and engines with other GM brands. The real problem was going so cheap that Cadillac had nothing to work with. Alsio the brands shared too many interior components, and too much exterior sheet metal. Taking away from each brands individual style.
Pay attention everyone. This here type of response is what happens when excessive amounts of exhaust fumes are inhaled. SMH!
Gary
You’re probably right. Drove an Audi for the 1st half of the last decade. Leaking exhaust is only one of the many problems it had.
What was it about JDN you most liked:
A) how he pushed hard to move Cadillac out of Detroit. Then said it wasn’t his Idea after he was fired.
B) the new alphanumeric names.
C) Dare Greatly
D) pushing to shut down a large number of Cadillac dealerships.
E) Project Pinnacle and the Idea of Virtual Dealerships.
F) Book by Cadillac
G) Falling U.S. sales
H) Blowing $12 Billion with almost nothing to show for it.
When you built the CTS V, that was science to compete with the European luxury super cars. But to drop it … you favored four door family and left the car folks wanting.
here are the sales numbers for the ct6 in china. i don’t know how those numbers compare with their german counterparts but at least they are going in the right direction.
2019 22.637
2018 17.223
2017 11.917
2016 5.830
in the US, trend is just the opposite
2019 7,951
2018 9,668
2017 10,542
2016 9,169
What do you mean “unfortunately” it will not be imported from China? Doing so would ruin the brand even more in this country.
That being said, there could have been a lot more done by GM to keep the CT6 made in the US even if it meant just keeping the body shop at DHAM and shipping the body to LGR for painting and final assembly.
I’m curious as to the reason for the negative perception of the vehicle being imported from China.
It would be the same car sold here; same engineering, would have to meet same government standards and requirements to meet,…
Is it a perception of low quality? Or…?
People especially on here get emotional and are all about economic nationalism. Obviously employing US Union workers is optimal but CT6 and even autos like Malibu have become niche models and warrant only one global production line. GM will never build for tiny margins, as seen with Cruze, or worse a loss. Shifting lines allows for the new Hummer production to be N American as well as other emerging segments.
Cadillac needs a halo sedan. CT6, preferably reskinned within a year or two,p accomplishs this. In addition Cadillac as well as the rest of GM must take a premium interior like found in Escalade and just use it for all models therefore ensuring quality while cutting cost.
GM might as well represent Global Mobility at th his point. For Cadillac sedan line up to survive global production must be considered.
If you import it from China, that would be the first headline in every review from every dying car rag on the market, then after they mention that the CT6 is made in china, they would probably bring up the Cimarron and the 468 engines too and maybe the Vega for good measure because you know, we still need to talk about cars from 40 years ago in new car reviews……
Or, bring up that other fine example of an imported “Cadillac”, the Caterra. “But. but…! It’s GERMAN!”. It was still a stinker.
I read an article within the last couple of weeks on GM Authority that there’s a rumor that Cadillac is planning a new sedan. Please be true!!!
I have one love mine I think it’s a dummy move. I’ve been with GM since I was born my father and his father and brothers worked for GM. Well BMW 750 here I come and I want be coming back to GM
As a longtime Cadillac owner, I’m really sad and very confused. Me and many others waited for a true, rear-drive Cadillac flagship sedan for a VERY long time. I got my first one in 2018, a Premium Luxury model, that I later traded on a facelifted 2019 Sport. It is truly an amazing car that deserves to live. You built this beautiful car and WE bought it; we love it! Mercedes owners have the S-Class, BMW’s the 7 and Audi’s the A8. Why those of us who rock with Cadillac can’t have ours? If you want to retain us and have us not wander to the Germans when in the market for a full-size flagship sedan, give us the reason to stay. This car, in many ways, validates Cadillac as the true luxury brand that it is.
The only saving grace i have heard is that in 2021 Cadillac is supposedly coming out with another full size sedan modeled after the escala concept car. Granted those articles are dated and some of the information seems not possible (share ct6 platform and made in Detroit hamarak plant). If anyone has any updated information that would be great.
https://www.motor1.com/news/236242/cadillac-escala-production-rumor/
I imagine there maybe something like that, with a dash like the new Escalade and a real name resolving the whole “letter and numbers are so confusing” issue that people seem to have with recent Cadillacs……
I hate to see the CT6 go away. Its a GREAT car. We just took delivery of a 2020 CT6 and love it. Without the CT6 and the CTS in the line up Cadillac has nothing. The CT5 is a small generic sedan not worthy of the crest on its grill and although I haven’t yet seen a CT4 in the metal, I don’t expect much. Cadillac is a “Big Car” company with no big cars in its line up and it hurts me because I have been a loyal Cadillac customer since 1980, when I bought a brand new Coupe DeVille. Since then I have bought or leased 16 additional Cadillacs, including a 1988 Allante. I loved them all, but it seems Cadillac has lost its way. Without a midsize sedan, the CTS, and a full size sedan, the CT6, Cadillac no longer competes directly with its European rivals. I’m not sure what i will replace my CT6 with when the lease is up in 2023, but I can assure you it will NOT be a CT5.
Sad news but not unanticipated. Thankfully I got my V last month…Last great Cadillac V8 large sedan.
Guess I will have to keep my 2017 till I leave this Earth. Love it 😍
As a current CT6 owner and one who grew up in Detroit, the city that put the world on wheels, I am disgusted with the decision GM is making. When I was growing up, the car we always thought was the best was the Cadillac, because it was the one rich people drove and gave us an incentive that one day we might own one. It was American-made and we loved them. Even though today there are fancier and even more expensive cars made by others outside America, owning a Cadillac meant one “arrived.” No more. My current CT6 has transmission problems. It drives outstandingly on the highway, but is a cludgey turkey on regular roads. It “clunks” into gear until I increase the speed. Cadillac refused to acknowledge the problem for a long time and the only fix is replacing transmission fluid when it gets bad enough.
Ok, so replace the transmission fluid.
Sandra, GM has issued a fix for the transmission problem you have. They change the tranny fluid ( free under warranty to fix problem ) for a full 100 percent synthetic at about 25,000 miles and the clunky problem disappears. Trust me, change your trans fluid every two years and only use the GM brand of trans fluid. The additives dissipate in high temperature conditions, so by changing it every couple of years, you are extending the life of the transmission probably by double or triple. My fleets of 400 cars and trucks used to run about 80,000 miles each car every year. We also ran mostly full synthetic engine oil as well, with some of the cars under a long term test with Shell Oil company. Those Shell test cars used a semi-synthetic engine oil, so the engines ran a bit cooler which means the transmissions ran cooler in the hot summers. Heat kills transmissions.
Improve the product improve the sales. GMs way is improve the product then cancel it. They improve the exterior styling got rid of the 4 and added a 8. With a few more improvements in interior and a better job of interior and trunk space they could have had a vehicle capable that could truly compete.
This is by far the best looking caddy in recent years. I’ve had my eye on one of these models when they reached 2-3 years old so I could afford one. Looks like that’s not going to be possible. Sad day for me! Maybe they will redo the models here to look like the models they are discontinuing! I’m barely hanging on to my GM stock as us! Hopefully they will come back to make ya proud again soon!
I bought a 2018 CT6 Premium Luxury with Super Cruise in December, 2018. I currently have 12,000 miles on it with absolutely no problems. A wonderful car, Head and shoulders above the rest. I replaced my 2000 “Sedan Deville DHS” with 316,000 miles on it.
Gm has already said they will be going fully electric they are getting rid of vehicles in increments slowly make way for the new tomorrow I’m sure there will be a fully electric flagship in the future
GM has jumped the gun because there are ten different battery types now available, and nobody can determine here in February 2020, which battery type will be the leading choice. Last year GM stated that they will offer over 20 electric vehicles between 2022 and 2024. If they stick to that arbitary schedule, that means by offering a couple of 2023 models in October or November of 2022, as a 2023 model, that’s about three full years from now. A huge breakthrough in extra strong and extra light weight graphene, made from waste plastic, waste coffee grounds, coal or other carbon based waste products, at a cost of a massive dose of electricity of just $100 per ton, changes the weight issue on every car, truck, bus, airplane and high strength building materials in the whole world. Today, graphene is $100 per GRAM. There are 454 grams per pound, so mulity $100 by 454 and graphene costs $45,400 per pound. To be able to cut the cost of graphene by $45,000 per pound, means that it will change the world. With graphene in more parts in vehicles, about 1,000 pounds coule be knocked off the weight of a 3/4 ton, 2500 series pickup truck. A Class 8 highway tractor trailer could reduce weight by over 3,000 to 6,000 pounds. This will save a huge amount on fuel consumption and smaller brakes can be used to save another 50 pounds on a medium duty truck, because of the lower weight of the brakes and suspension parts. Guys this is a game changer, like no other in history. Go and view the most recent ( in the past 2 years ) videos on Youtube of graphene. Graphene can be used as a coating for TV glass, cellphone glass and the windows in cars and trucks. Lighter, stronger windows made with a graphene coating, that cannot shatter in vehicles, will save at least 100 pounds per car. You can use recycled plastic and only 2 percent graphene to made rebar for office buildings foundations, have already been made. The rebar never. ever rusts meaning the cement will last over 100 years for bridges, roads and very high office building. Image knocking off 10,000 pounds from a mid size jet. Compare the weight difference of 12,000 pounds between an older model Boeing 737-400 and the new Bombardier C-Series/Airbus A220 mid size jet that Delta Airlines has been flying since march 2019. The fuel savings is huge, because of the lower weight, saving 21 percent on fuel burn. Each plane will save Delta over $1 million per year just on fuel savings. They ordered 90 of them. JetBlue has ordered 60 with options for another 60. Air Canada placed 45 firm orders and started flying it a few weeks ago. Korean Air got 10 of them. The newly announced buget airline to be operated by David Neeleman, founder of Jetblue, has also placed orders for his airline to start this year. He’s no dummy. The Bombardier 135 seat CS-100 and CS300 jets have now been flying for over 3 years in Europe with Swiss Airlines. Less weight means much better profits. Delta just gave a huge bonus to each employee. This means everyone benefits from less weight. Now you know.
Agree. How long do you guess it will take GM to get any of this to market?
I don’t know if GM needs to get into the passenger jet business, I think they have enough to manage already……
Gm doesn’t make the batteries. So if something new comes, then they can do that. Tesla makes their own batteries.
If this is the end of the CT6 Cadillac flag ship then we need another big Cadillac for the flag ship The ct5 and ct4 will not would not be able to take the place of flag ship CT6 I Think GM and Cadillac need to move up the production for the cadlillac escala and make it valuable A.S.P like the second-quarter 2021 I have been with cadillac for 30 Plus years wouldn’t want to lose loyal customers like myself I currently have 2017 ct6 and 2015 Escalade Waiting too long for 2021 Escalade?
The Escalade is the new flagship, with car sales shriveling up, hard to justify another car. And new cars don’t just appear in a year, it takes a year or two just to build production tooling, and that’s after the design and testing phase. So don’t look for a new idea to show up for at least 3 to 5 years. That’s why the car companies keep everything a secret until the car is ready so that their competitors won’t be able to copy a new feature for even several more years.
This is a great car. Granted, I don’t want a Chinese Cadillac, but I do want a Platinum CT6 with the V8! Make the 2020 in America, for Americans!
Drive a CT5 and you will understand it is not a replacement for the 6. Too noisy interior, tuned to make the engine sound growl when accelerating so the millennials “feel good”, and much smaller interior and trunk than the 6. And try the range on an EV! Want to get from MI to FL in less than a week? Good luck. pjl
It is sad to see GM going back to parts bin parts for making cars and trucks. I have always bought GM vehicles since the 70s except 1 time. Yes electric is fine that’s if you want one. Many many of us have to travel many miles to get from point A to B and electric is not for many of us.
GET OFF YOUR ASS AND GET THE ESCALA OUT FAST. ALSO CHANGE THE BODY FASTER THAN EVERY 5 YEARS. PUT IN AN ENGINE THAT HAS MORE HORSEPOWER THAN ANY OTHER LUXURY CAR AND DO NOT CHARGE AN EXTRA $20K, LOOK AT THE EXCITEMENT THE CORVETTE IS CAUSING WITH ITS 0-60. SINCE THE BEGINNING OF TIME A LUXURY CAR IS LOW, LONG, WIDE AND FAST. QUIT SEEING HOW CHEAP YOU CAN MAKE IT. QUIT WORRYING ABOUT THE GAS MILEAGE. FOLLOW THESE COMMENTS AND YOU WILL HAVE THE FIRST YEARS PRODUCTION SOLD OUT LIKE THE CORVETTE.
ALSO WHEN IS THE REPLACEMENT FOR MY XLR COMING. I KNOW YOU HAVE ONE LURKING.
Hmmm, have I ever mentioned how absolutely horrible GM’s entire marketing department is.. ? Maybe not since yesterday. I would fire everyone Monday morning, start all over with a nothing to lose approach..
Dumb. This is why Cadillac and GM will lose market share. The best looking sedan in 20 years and they cancel. Not worth the time to write this but someone needs to get a clue within Cadillac.
Have you people gone mad? It would be an absolute political disaster to import the CT6 from CHINA and try to sell it to gung ho ,southern accent slurrin’, gun totin’, tobacco chewin’ US Americans. The fools yelling “Buy American” to progressive US citizens would look even much dumber and clueless than they always have since 1976.
Besides that, the fact remains, the CT6 wasn’t selling in the USA Why? Because in the USA, General Motors is always behind the curve and doesnt grasp opportunity when it is the pink elephant in the room. And quite frankly many people don’t trust Cadillac after what they’ve done to the CTS and V-lines. And Look at what they did with the EV1. That ridiculously wasted opportunity is now a raging success for Tesla.
It is amazing GM can stay afloat, considering what horrible marketers they are. Do you ever remember seeing an ad for the CT6 on TV, in movie theatres?? I sure don’t. What about promotional venues at huge malls, test drives at car shows????? Nothing!
A good effort, but the CT6 was already outdated by the time it was ready for release. While it probably isn’t, it looks like a large lumbering, outdated sedan, that based on GM’s terrible reputation, is also overpriced, defective, is a depreciation horror story, etc. If I am not mistaken, much of the CT6 is based off a reskinned Impala. The revamped Impala had drive train and ignition key issues. Things that are inexcusable for a $45,000+ car. And for the CT6, where are the hybrid and ELECTRIC versions? Hello GM! Any gears cranking over there? (PUN INTENDED)
You are mistaken. First of all the CT6 is not a re-skinned Impala? The XTS was closely related to the Impala, the CT6 is a RWD car on the GM Omega platform. In fact its the only vehicle on the platform. The other fact is……there was a CT6 PHEV and guess where they were assembled?? Shanghai! Few were sold before it was cancelled, but it was here, a made in China Cadillac.
As much as I’ve had GM products all my life bought new a 1999 Sierra 1500 a 2015 Silverado and a 2019 Impala and still have them I give GM the benefit of the doubt and have been really wanting to invest in the company stock long term however I have been unlucky to be dealing with its current well known issues like the 2015 Silverado shaking issues and transmission hard shits and last but not least a hard brake issue at low speeds which had a recall that just made it worse what kills me is that this brake booster pump is under 200 and they won’t replace it, I’m not fighting them and I give to be honest, it really is a shame I won’t be buying GM anymore a life long customer SMH
When Mark Ruess and Company basically ran Johan out of GM, what did everyone here expect to happen?
Just think about this for a second. Not only does Cadillac NOT have a 7 Series competitor, they won’t even have a 5 Series Competitor. Running Johan out of Town was yet once again an example of just how GM doesn’t understand the Luxury Market. Johan had a vision and he would have turned Cadillac around. No doubt about it. But GM was once again extremely impatient. Now, they have a dowdy lineup of Two Half Arsed Sedans and some serious ho hum CUV’s. Thank God they will be getting the new Escalade just to try and stay alive.
I have stated this for a couple of years now. If the Future Cadillac EV’s are NOT world Class vehicles, Cadillac will die a very, very slow death. They are Basically going to be a little bit nicer version of say Acura and Infinity.
It is almost a joke that Cadillac will have two Sedans. All Three of the German Luxury Brands have four Sedans each and some even have Multiple Four Door Coupes.
Cadillac is not even remotely on true Luxury Buyers Radar. It is a shame that we never got to see Johans vision come to fruition. I mean Cadillac doesn’t even have a convertible. I mean what Luxury Auto Maker doesn’t offer multiple convertibles let alone just one. We need to stop acting like Cadillac is in the same class as Audi, Mercedes, and BMW because they are not even close. They would have closed the Gap with Johan but we all know once the Beancounters took over everything at GM that dream was over.
CT6 V looked wicked and performance seems out of this world, definitely could have had a much better interior though for 92k, i for one would never purchase this car if it began coming in from China!
A full size sedan will make a return for Cadillac. Folks need to chill out. A small hiatus won’t hurt the reputation especially with the small take rate anyway for the sedan. The bread and butter for the lux sedans will be covered by the CT4/5. Cadillac will be just fine until a full size sedan returns
Being a Cadillac CTS, owner and driver..I hate this for the Mothership of this car😟 cause this model is Outstanding and day’s everything 🙌 about a Cadillac!!!
G.m a dumb Azz now they don’t have a luxury sedan 2 compete with the BMW and Mercedes
