During a press event in Las Vegas, Nevada, General Motors confirmed the arrival of the all-new 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray to Mexico. The company announced that the first mid-engine Corvette will be available in the Latin country in the second quarter of the year, shortly after it arrives in U.S. dealerships.
Like the U.S.-spec version, the first variant of the new 2020 Chevrolet Corvette sold in Mexico will be the Stingray coupe, but with either the Z51 or Z51 Performance package. The convertible variant is also scheduled to arrive in Mexico later this year, although GM has not yet revealed any information in this regard.
“After more than 60 years with a front-engine layout and having reached its own performance limits, Chevrolet Corvette was redesigned with a mid-mounted engine visible from the outside and a driver-centered cockpit, while maintaining all the comfort and entertainment features of this iconic sports car,” said Sales, Service and Marketing Vice President of GM Mexico, Juan Carlos García, in a press release.
The exterior design of the 2020 Stingray is aggressive and futuristic, thanks to the new proportions of the mid-engine layout, but remains unmistakably a Corvette. As such, the new engine location is the focal point of the Corvette’s eighth-generation design and stands out as a visible jewel through a large display case. Meanwhile, the cabin boasts the detail and premium materials of a supercar.
Buyers of the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette in Mexico can enjoy the new naturally aspirated, 6.2L LT2 V8 engine that delivers up to 495 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. The engine is coupled to Chevrolet’s first eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, which provides quick gear changes with the wheel-mounted shift paddles.
The 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray coupe will go on sale in the Mexican market in the second quarter of 2020, manufactured exclusively at the GM Bowling Green, Kentucky plant. The vehicle will only be sold in the 10 Chevrolet Performance stores in the country, located in Mexico City (3), Monterrey, Guadalajara, Querétaro, Cancun, San Luis Potosí, Puebla and Culiacán, with the following prices:
- Corvette Z51: $1,999,000 MXN (about $104,450 USD at current exchange rates)
- Corvette Z51 Performance Package: $2,200,000 MXN ($114,950 USD)
Compared to the U.S. market, the price of the eighth-generation Chevrolet Corvette will increase dramatically in Mexico. To put things into perspective, the base price of the 2019 Corvette Stingray in the country is $1,195,000 MXN ($62,450 USD) – which totally changes the positioning of the vehicle in that market.
