Competitive Sales Comparison

The decline in Chevrolet Traverse sales during Q4 2019 pushed the vehicle into third place in its segment, behind the Toyota Highlander and the Ford Explorer (see Ford Explorer sales) as well as its police-duty variant (see Police Interceptor Utility sales). The decrease comes after 25 percent sales growth during the third quarter, some growth in Q2 2019, a 10 percent decline in Q1 2019, and a 14 percent growth in the fourth quarter of 2018.

Following the Traverse are the Honda Pilot, Subaru Ascent, Volkswagen Atlas (see VW Atlas sales), Kia Telluride, Nissan Pathfinder, Hyundai Palisade, Dodge Durango, and the Mazda CX-9.

For informational and comparative purposes, we are also providing sales figures for midsize SUV models that overlap with large crossover SUVs like the Traverse – either in price, seating capacity, or both. These not-quite-full-size crossovers are often cross-shopped with full-size crossover SUVs. These models include:

  • Midsize crossovers that offer three rows, including as the GMC Acadia (see GMC Acadia sales), Kia Sorento, and Mitsubishi Outlander

The GM Authority Take

The decrease in Chevrolet Traverse sales during the fourth quarter is directly attributed to the UAW labor strike, which stopped GM vehicle assembly operations for 40 days. As such, the GM Lansing Delta plant that produces the Traverse did not supply any new units of the full-size crossover to dealers for well over two months.

It’s worth noting that five competing models showed very strong sales results during the month. These include the Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade, Mazda CX-9, Subaru Ascent, and VW Atlas. Combined, the Kia and Hyundai accounted for nearly 35,000 units, significantly more than the Traverse. Subaru Ascent sales, meanwhile, climbed nearly 12 percent to 21,916 units and VW Atlas sales increased 31 percent to 21,803 units.

For its part, the Chevrolet Traverse will receive a refresh for the 2021 model year that will include updated front and rear ends that bring it in-line with the rest of the Chevrolet crossover family, including the new Chevy Blazer, Trailblazer, and the 2021 Chevrolet Equinox – which was just announced at the 2020 Chicago Auto Show.
