2020 Cadillac XT6 Named China SUV Of The Year

After a rigorous four-month testing and analysis process, the 2020 Cadillac XT6 recently received the China SUV of the Year award. Cadillac’s three-row crossover received this outstanding recognition during the 2020 China Awards Ceremony, which was organized by the editors of Motor Trend magazine in the Asian country.

This award is the latest example of the important role that the Cadillac XT6 plays in the brand’s growth strategy in China, where the vehicle went on sale last July. The “midsize-plus” crossover is not only the largest utility that Cadillac markets in the Chinese market, but also the first large luxury utility vehicle manufactured in that country – an important competitive advantage over all competing rivals.

After multiple rounds of testing among several finalists, as well as discussions between the judges, the Cadillac XT6 scored high on several evaluation categories such as Appearance and technology, Configuration and space, Safety performance and Propulsion system. In addition, the XT6 also stood out in leadership, market importance and value.

Through an official press release, the jury commented on its verdict: “The Cadillac XT6 won the 2020 China SUV award for its good performance in all aspects. The utility vehicle subtly combines the essence of large American cars with comfort, excellent handling and a high level of safety.”

“Its wide range of active and passive safety technologies, spacious passenger compartment, good ride comfort as well as class-exclusive six- and seven-passenger seating configuration provide the 2020 Cadillac XT6 with an excellent balance of safety, comfort and versatility. We believe that Cadillac’s flagship crossover has set a new standard in the large luxury SUV segment in China,” concluded the panel of experts.

A highly influential automotive recognition, the China Car and SUV of the Year awards ceremony has been held for the past 18 years. As such, the event is widely regarded by readers and consumers in the Asian country. This year’s judges were a collection of experts in the automotive field, including representatives of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and other automotive engineering faculties in the country.

  1. Translation: Not built for the North American market hence the reason it’s basically boring and nothing to talk about performance wise.

    1. Yes, it could be any Toyota.

    2. The XT6 is already extremely successful in the NA market due to the reasons stated above. Many families don’t rank performance highly on their lists of importance. That’s why the XT6 does well.

It may not be the drivers favorite, but it’s certainly a winner for families.

      1. I wonder what brands it competed against? I would expect Volvo being that they are now Chinese would be one, and isn’t there a joint venture with another one with BMW or Mercedes?

        1. I would assume that the Chinese Enclave would have been one. I prefer it over the Caddy. and its interior is terrific.

      2. Really? I live in Houston and there has at most been 3 XT6’s that I’ve spotted in the wild in affluent areas in the city. Otherwise it’s been a parade of Escalades Yukons GWagons. Hell I’ve seen more Bentaygas in the wild around the Houston area than this glorified enclave.

        1. Yes because Houston is the entire USA…..

        2. This is crazy! I can confirm this also. I see quite a few XT6s in the wild all through Texas especially Houston. Looking at the sales figures, they’re doing extremely well considering it’s an expensive, brand new to the market, crossover.

  2. It pays to design a vehicle specifically for the target market which is the Chinese customer.

  3. Who paid China off?

    1. Dealing with China ensures that the multinational executives make their big end of year bonuses but in the long-term, China owns and controls everything. That’s how China has become # 1.

  4. We Don’t care about China.

    1. Bill,
You should, because everything you buy comes from there. Retail stores couldn’t operate without China.

You should bow to your overlords and thank the Communist Party for subsidizing your standard of living… For now.😂 Until they decide to pull the plug.

  5. SMH.. Its hard to believe that the commentary by some. Ironically.. one drive in the XT6 I assure U that U will be surprised how nice it performs for a vehicle its size.. and by perform I mean all round.. as a luxury SUV that hits on target for its intended buyers.

  6. I have no hate towards this product. This GM platform drives awesome and it will tick all the boxes for many customers.

  7. It’s funny how the Aviator by many is sooooo much better than the XT6 by social media and critics, yet the XT6 outsells it 1.5-2 to 1. I’v seen more XT6s and only one Aviator so far on the road. I prefer the overall styling of the XT6 over the Aviator.

    1. I was going to say the same thing. My Ford buddies have been talking smack since the day the Aviator dropped, this thing is a German slayer, its everything Cadillac wishes it could be and so much more, etc. And of course, the mindless “glorified Traverse” trash-talking that, sadly, I see some here have picked up on. One guy actually bet substantial cash (idiot!) that the Aviator would outsell the XT6 4:1 in their first full year. Not looking so hot right now for him…

I live up in Cleveland, Ohio, and while this isn’t representative of the entire country, Cleveland in many ways represents the heart of the country, very balanced mix of people and cars. I kid you not, I’ve seen 5 times as many XT6’s as I have Aviators, at least. While the Aviator got all the hype, all the praise, the XT6 quietly began production. And after the absolutely pathetic start to production began for the Aviator/Explorer in Chicago, the problems just started rolling on in. Electronics, fit and finish, it was one thing after another. And the XT6 began to sell, and sell some more. Pretty sure they sold at least twice as many XT6’s as they did Aviators last year.

Say what you will about platform sharing, Traverses and all that, but something needs to be said for using a tried-and-true platform that perfectly satisfies the vast majority of needs, as opposed to a clean-sheet shot for the moon that came with incredible headaches. I do very much like the Aviator, but the early battles in this war (in the REAL world, not Motor Trend reviews) have been quietly won by Cadillac.

  8. I too prefer the Aviator over the XT6 if I was buying a midsize luxury US CUV but I knew the XT6 was a hit because of the demographics of who’s buying what in that category, plus XT6 isn’t a bad vehicle.

    1. That’s it.. The Aviator has a better engine combo for enthusiasts.. problem is.. enthusiasts typically aren’t gonna buy in this segment.. WOMEN are.. Cadillac did their research for a change and despite being late.. decided that the XT5 needed a larger version to compete with the actual sales leaders and bring in the most influential buyers in any household.. Wives/GFs. I won;t even get into the fact that despite the BS.. no one is out on the track or blvd for that matter racing luxury Cuvs. I very seldom even see a Durango SRT or GC SRT doing it. Let me add that I do think that Cadillac should give the option of a TTV6 3.6L LF4.. but as a factory order by Dealers or Customers if they want it

  9. The XT6 is a joke and not a Cadillac. Not a single reviewer/review has said its “wow”, but more like it’s on the bottom end of the lux segment or even “its nice” but not a luxury player. The fact it’s won this award tells me where GM is focused whereas other mfrs “are” focused on the US market. For those reasons this barely gloried Equinox will never be on my list… it’s an overpriced underwhelming badge engineered loser…

  10. Aviator who? Lol. Sorry, the moment that you botched a vehicle launch and having quality problems is not a very good sign.

  11. I’ve started seeing these more and more around the Atlanta, Georgia area. This vehicle is truly a beauty in person. It has a strong presence on the road and it’s something about the details in the exterior design like the vertical LED blades that really catch your eye. The new Escalade has now adopted this similar opulent, simple, and modern design and it is so attractive and really demands attention in person. The exterior design is like nothing else on the road. They really knocked the exterior out of the park for me especially when considering the boring designs on the competition like Lexus RX-L and Infiniti QX60.
