With General Motors announcing full pricing for the 2020 Buick Encore GX last month and the EPA releasing its fuel economy estimates for the new compact crossover, we expected dealers to begin taking delivery of the vehicle shortly.
We can now report the crossover has begun to arrive at some Buick dealers in the United States, though many units are still in transit, en route from South Korea. Canadian dealers should also begin to receive the vehicle shortly, with Buick Canada saying it will go on sale in spring 2020.
The 2020 Buick Encore GX will start at $25,095 in the U.S. for the entry-level Preferred trim. The mid-range Select trim will start at $26,695, while the range-topping Essence is priced from $29,495.
A number of active safety features are standard on the 2020 Buick Encore GX – an area that GM has lagged behind its rivals in recently. Front Pedestrian Braking, Automatic Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Alert and Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning are all included with the $25,095 base price. Some safety features will be extra, though, with the Advanced Technology package adding Adaptive Cruise Control and Rear Park Assist and the Safety package adding Rear Cross-Traffic Alert and Blind-Spot Warning.
The standard engine on all three 2020 Buick Encore GX trim levels is a turbocharged 1.2L LIH three-cylinder engine, which produces 137 horsepower and 166 pound-feet of torque and is paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). A more powerful 1.3L L3T three-cylinder, good for 155 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque, can be added to front-wheel-drive models at extra cost. The 1.3L engine is also the only engine offered with AWD models. It is paired with the GM nine-speed automatic transmission in AWD Encore GXs instead of the CVT.
The 2020 Buick Encore GX is built at GM Korea’s Bupyeong facility in Incheon, South Korea alongside the related 2020 Chevrolet Trailblazer. Like the Encore GX, the Trailblazer is expected to arrive in the U,S. from South Korea in increasing numbers over the next few months.

don’t forget, any color other than white is extra!!!
and the nearly identical trailblazer is $5K less.
but i’m sure gm marketing has the data that show this is what consumers want.
It’s always so interesting to me that people don’t see the differences between a Buick and a Chevy. Sit in an Encore, then sit in a Trax, and tell me they’re “nearly identical”. I expect the same differences between the Encore GX and the Trailblazer.
Just another troll who doesn’t know what he/she is talking about.
It probably has a much nicer interior and added sound absorption that the trailblazer won’t have. If you want a cheaper car buy the mass market brand. Chevy selling the Trax seems to have done little to pull regular Encore buyers from the Buick.
The new Encore GX Add probably 25% or more for the base vehicle plus colour ,north of the border for difference in currency so a loaded AWD one will be $30-40 CAD probably comparable to current Equinox prices. As far as a comparison to Pudgy hardly updated Trax ,both The Trail Blazer for five thousand less than the GX Encore in are both way handsomer better equipped With better interiors too !
The current smaller luxury Buick Encore (non – GX )2019-20 may end up the bargain of the year with discounts to move them out and many having the 155 hp Turbo over the 138hp four cyl. Engine which have perform really well !
@Gary L. The 2020 Encore (non GX) doesn’t offer the 155 hp engine any more. Just the base 1.4L.
Right Dan ,but the dealers are loaded up here in southern Ontario ,with 2019 Encore Sports and better models they can’t seem to move at current prices and the new Encore 2020’s and Encore GX won’t help that situation ,so they will have to discount then by $4000-5000 Plus Costco $500 rebates to move them off the lots in the spring, hopefully !
But they have a real automatic transmission not CVT small or larger engine !
The Encore is made in China , it would be $5000 less if made in the USA.
The Encore and Encore GX are built in South Korea not China which doesn’t appear to have anything to do with the ultimate suggested sale price since labour rates are lower there than in North America facilities ,so don’t ever count on a five thousand dollar reduction either way !
should be a big hit. Now Buick needs to move their slow moving selves going and get the Enspire to market.
When is GM going to just start offering these safety options as standard like their rivals . Anything to make more money on these cheaper made products .

My Regal has got Brembo calipers and Ceramic brake pads. Which can take the car from highway speed to dead stop almost instantly. It’s also got GM’s magnetic ride control. Which gives it unbelievable handling on slippery surfaces.
GM’s rivals got some cheap wiring and sensors that I wouldn’t use on a Christmas tree. Small brake pads that need to be changed more often than maxi pads. And the sure footed ness of a drunk gorilla with Parkinson’s.
The Imports don’t give a $#!+ about actual safety. They’re just checking off as many boxes as they can as cheaply as they can, so they could sell more of their crappy little econoboxes.
@android19: It kind of seems that you have this same comment a lot. I’m not sure where you are coming up with this, but I work with Volvo and Mazda now. I’ve been with Cadillac, Buick, GMC and Honda for 12 years. Cadillac for an additional year for a total of 18 years in the business. GM and Buick have been at the front of so many safety items well before many others had them. They have some of the best technology out there. I personally drive two cars: a 2018 Buick Encore preferred and a 2006 Lucerne CXL V8 with 162K on the odo. For a 2006, the Lucerne has many great safety features for that time. My Encore also, but I got the second to lowest level trim. I could have paid extra for some more safety features, but I still would have been well below many other brand’s on price.
So I read your comment earlier today and then, just for fun, went to the Volvo order guide and checked to be sure on the XC40. Now, nobody will attempt to say that Volvo is not a safe brand. But guess what? Blind spot monitor and a few other items are all options on the base Momentum. Adding just a few items to get the full safety and a few comfort features brings the XC40 price up to about $39,000 with the base engine and rims. Now compare that to this new Encore GX where, from the sounds of it, you could get the fully loaded up Essence AWD (to get the good 9 speed auto and higher HP) for an MSRP around $34,000. Same size and better reliability for about $5,000 less. And IMO, a better looking exterior/interior.
A lot of what is offered in the Encore is not standard in a base competitor, so I am not understanding where you get that from. Look at a comparison of a base Encore to a base Honda or Chevy and see what they offer, I have.
This will kind of be the same as a comment I made above on someone else’s post. But I think it’s worth saying. I really feel this new Encore GX will be a huge hit for Buick. And although I feel the Chevrolet will also be a huge hit, I don’t see them competing against each other. Anyone who knows Buick can and will tell you they are much different from the corporate cousins. Let’s not forget that platform sharing is not exclusive to GM nor is it new. Toyota/lexus, Nissan/Infiniti, Honda/Acura, Hyundai/Kia/Genesis and Ford/Lincoln to name just a few. It’s also worth noting that anyone who has really looked at the Chevrolet Trax and then looked at the Buick Encore will come away knowing there is a large difference. This past December while at the LA auto show, I took a lot of time at both the Buick and Chevrolet displays. Although I love this new Encore GX, I hate the fact that they are sticking a CVT in it. Yes, you can get the 9 speed auto, but must take the AWD then. I hate CVT’s and I have zero need for AWD, thus my attention turned to possibly getting a 2020 Encore or Trax. This gave me the chance to really look over the 2020 Trax Premier at the show and I walked away knowing that I would much rather keep my 2018 Encore. They really are that different.
Now onto the safety thing that some are going on about. Because I work with Mazda and Volvo, I can tell you that both those brands even hold some safety features for the “higher” trims or more expensive models. I will say that Mazda has done a nice job of adding more to every model, but they also cut corners on stuff like Apple Carplay/Android Auto. The base CX30, base CX5 Sport, as well as all other base models don’t come with it. Sure you can add it for $500, but why not just go to the next higher trim? However, you then are pushing well into the $25-29,000 range for those models. Then take the Volvo XC40: base trim Momentum, front drive, T4 engine with the extra packages to get the full safety features and extra comfort features, will push you above $38,000. Add extra cost color, bigger rims and you roll over the $40,000 mark.
So please tell me how a fully loaded Encore GX AWD for about $34,000 MSRP is bad? It’s the same size as the XC40, way less money, more reliable (based on past and current Buicks), and better looking to boot. This new Encore GX blows nearly everything from Mazda away. It’s miles better than the Honda’s and Toyota’s out there. If it wasn’t for the blind loyalty to those brands and if those same people would actually give Buick a try, there would be a lot more on the road.
well designed and good proportioned little CUV. 3 cylinder engines don’t sound reassuring but i bet GM sells a bunch of these
For the same or less money I would much rather have the far better looking 250 HP Regal hatch. When sitting up a little higher takes away power and driving fun and even room behind the back seat along with styling it’s just not worth it to me. Too bad GM just doesn’t care and never promoted the Regal and Tour X because this frumpy 3 cylinder wonder does nothing for me.
Tell us when you buy a a Regal. There is no better time to buy one as discounts are generous.
If everyone who said how great the Regal was it would not be going away.
Well you can’t fix stupid. Both GM and the buying public that is!
@Joe Yoman: I read a lot from others about the 3 cly and how bad it must be or is. When have you driven this car? Have you driven a 3 cyl in the past 5 years? (please don’t bring up the Metro!!!)
I’m actually wanting to know because I don’t see the 3 cyl as the true issue with the new GX. Personally, I see the CVT as the true issue. I have driven them very recently. I ride in cars with them all the time. I listen to the many Nissan owners who constantly replace them at about 60K. From what I have heard and read, Ford is doing really well with it’s 3 cyl. They have been around for some time in other countries. So my thought is let them bring it out in the 3 cyl and let’s give it a chance to prove (or disprove) itself. Then and only then can we all speak more strongly about it.
I can tell you the 1.5EB 3 cylinder in the Ford Escape is not a nice sounding refined engine but at least the 8 speed doesn’t keep it revving like a CVT would when all you want is a little more forward motion.
Being that it is in a Buick I would expect the new engine to be more refined than what you would get in a Ford, the previous Subaru Justy, or even the one in the Fiat 500X. Buick customers have higher expectations similar to those who buy high end luxury cars like Mercedes, BMW, and Cadillac. Having experienced CVTs in recent years which was not pleasant noise wise, again I would expect Buick to have something better than what would come in an economy car.
My bad, the Fiat has a 1.3L inline 4 not a 3. The Mitsubishi Mirage is a 3 banger.
I too was somewhat concerned about the three cylinder engine, but I’ve now driven the new Encore GX 1.2 L variant and was actually very impressed with the CVT, and power. Of course this was just a short 12 mile drive on highway and city driving, but I found it to be peppy, quiet and responsive. I just put an order in for a new encore GX 1.3 L version because of this. I’ve had the regular encore 2015 And it served me very well, so I am now looking forward to the new one.
Had a Honda fit and a Honda civic in the past with the CVT and was more course sounding when pressing the pedal. The GX that I test drove sounded less course in my opinion.
Buick is a domestic AMERICAN division –build it in AMERICA
Put the automatic transmission in all 1.3 Lt. engines models with or without AWD ,if you want a winner and try the C.V.T.only in 1.2 Lt. to start and see how it is accepted and performs in daily use ,please !
