The Chevrolet Onix Arrives In Mexico

In December, GM Authority exclusively reported that General Motors has already started production of the all-new Chevrolet Onix at the San Luis Potosí plant, which is located in central Mexico. Now, the company has officially announced the arrival of the subcompact sedan in the Mexican market.

GM confirmed that sales of the new Chevrolet Onix will start in early February, and will arrive as a 2021 model – an unusual strategy for that country. As we previously reported, the 2021 Onix will be offered only as a four-door sedan in Mexico as well as in LS, LT and Premier variants.

“The Onix will seek to revolutionize the subcompact segment with unparalleled value, a new generation of efficient turbocharged engines which offer balance between power and performance, total connectivity and a high level of safety in one package,” said Chevrolet Marketing Manager in Mexico, Adriana Schütte, in a press release.

As such, the second-generation Chevrolet Onix comes with the objective of positioning itself as the best choice in the segment that boasts the highest sales volume in the Mexican market. To achieve this, the vehicle offers a fresh design, GM’s new generation of turbocharged three-cylinder engines as well as a high level of class-leading technology and safety features.

Turbocharged 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine

The entry-level variants (LS and LT) of the Onix are equipped with a 1.0-liter turbo engine that generates 114 horsepower and 120 pound-feet of torque, matched to either a six-speed automatic transmission or a five-speed manual. Meanwhile, the Premier trim features a 1.2-liter turbocharged engine that produces 130 hp and 141 lb.-ft. of torque, coupled exclusively to the six-speed automatic.

The 2021 Chevrolet Onix goes on sale in Mexico in the first half of February, offering consumers a high level of customization, thanks to more than 35 official accessories and six pre-assembled packages (pets, adventure, sport, platinum, lux and protection). The starting prices of three grades available in the Mexican market are as follows:

  • Onix LS: $239,900 MXN ($12,720 USD at current exchange rates)
  • Onix LT: $ 269,900 MXN ($14,315 USD)
  • Onix Premier: $299,900 MXN ($15,900 USD)

  1. That would be a good replacement for the Sonic. That’s a decent little small car. Maybe the US would get the bigger 1.3 Turbo 3. Not sure if it would meet US Crash worthiness however.

    1. They won’t be bringing this to the US.

      1. Don’t count your chickens there, before they hatch , mexico and brasil are new car markets and so is the Us obviously. Theres a definite need for reliable small passenger cars. Besides it’s off the new worldwide GEM PLATFORM, JUST LIKE ENCORE GX AND CHEVY TRAILBLAZER.

        1. I agree with Scott ZL1, the onix either as a sedan or hatch or both will be in the Us and canada eventually. Theres just a need for this size and class of car here. It’s also to super tweak this size car into a SS high performance model such as fitting the new gm 2L turbo 237 hp 4 cylinder. The fact is if promoted and priced right this can be a quite high volume seller.

    2. I agree. There are many imported sub-compacts from Asian and European producers, so this North American product can compete and sell well. And it looks good with the modern Chevrolet family face.

  2. After the NAFTA re-do I think this will replace Sonic in the US especially since it has Encore/Trailblazer running gear.

      1. You don’t work for Chevy management, so why the negative post? Any vehicle than GM manufactures worldwide is worthy to sell in the U.S. since the foreign companies do the same and nobody complaints abut them, except loyal GM customers. My Equinox was assembled in Canada and it is still the second best GM in sales worldwide.

        1. Thanks Raymond,GM in Canada still quality builds The Chev. Equinox in Ingersoll Ontario ,Oshawa Assembly that use to finish Equinox for Ingersoll and light trucks for Fort Wayne in one of the newest advanced paint shops and integrated automated assembly facilities .Those Models along with the loss Of Chev.Impala and the large Cadillac Sedan XLS that were pulled out over the last two years and the whole award winning quality build Oshawa Plant shut down by Detroit management after over 100 years serving the North American market with quality vehicles ,to apparently go E.V.abandoning one of their key plants that could have quality built them economically without breaking a sweat !

        2. this car, the new mexican onix will easily meet any Us safety standard, China has updated and revised their safety standards, this car comes off the new GEM PLATFORM jointly designed between gm north america, gm korea (formerly daewoo), and gm china. This car can be easily sold here. GM NEEDS TO GET SOME BIG BRASS ONES BACK instead of spending 2.2 billion on battery electrics for which theres little to no wide. Scale publically accessible recharging places outside of your single family home. You know theres been developed a CO2 to ethanol direct conversion process which needs development. 2.2 billion would sure come in handy, ya think, yah. Holy dogpoop there batman. Could GM sell tens of thousands 15-17k high mileage flex fuel compacts. With the right sales and marketing approach.
