GMC Hummer Electric Truck Announced, Will Make 11,500 Lb-Ft Of Torque

General Motors has released some of the first official details on its forthcoming electric pickup truck, which will be called the GMC Hummer EV.

As we exclusively reported last night, the GMC Hummer EV will be good for over 1,000 horsepower thanks to its advanced pure electric powertrain, but that’s not all. GMC says the truck will also make a staggering 11,500 pound-feet of torque and will be able to accelerate from 0-60 mph in just three seconds flat. Additionally, the automaker claimed the truck will provide “incredible on- and off-road capability,” suggesting it will have trail running, rock crawling prowess akin to other adept off-roaders like the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2.

Sources previously told GM Authority the vehicle’s driving range will be around 400 miles, “conservatively speaking.” The vehicle will utilize GM’s new BT1 large electric vehicle platform.

GM also confirmed that it will air a commercial for the GMC Hummer EV during TV coverage of Super Bowl LIV this weekend. The automaker says the ad will be called “Quiet Revolution” and will “juxtapose the staggering anticipated performance metrics of GMC’s first all-electric truck with the remarkable quietness inherent in the operation of an electric vehicle.”

“GMC builds premium and capable trucks and SUVs and the GMC HUMMER EV takes this to new heights,” said GMC brand boss Duncan Aldred. “We are excited to debut our revolutionary zero-emissions truck during the biggest night in TV advertising.”

A Hummer H2 grille and logo

We’ll get to see the GMC Hummer EV in full much earlier than anticipated, as well. GM previously said the truck wouldn’t arrive until 2021, so we didn’t think we’d get a glimpse of the truck until sometime next year, but it is slated to make an official debut on May 20th, 2020, at the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant in Michigan. The plant was announced as GM’s first dedicated EV plant this week and will also build the Cruise Origin in addition to the GMC Hummer EV. It is believed GM will add more products to Detroit-Hamtramck’s task list between now and 2025, as well, including the rumored electric Cadillac Escalade.

Previous reports indicated GM was looking at reviving the Hummer nameplate for the electric truck, but it was unclear if the vehicle would fall under a revived Hummer brand, or if it would be badged as a GMC. We now know the truck will indeed be a GMC, with the truck set to be sold through GMC dealers.

You can see a little bit more of the GMC Hummer EV in the teaser clip embedded below. The teaser video also shows off the vehicle’s grille start-up animation, which utilizes the wide LED light bar sitting behind the vehicle’s recognizable six-segment Hummer grille.

We’ll be following the GMC Hummer EV development very closely, so be sure to subscribe to GM Authority for more Hummer news, GMC news, and around-the-clock GM news coverage.

Axle torque. SAE numbers will be around 1,000 lb. ft. per Road and Track.

Definitely at wheel torque. Original Hummer had gearboxes in the wheel hub to increase torque. If we are doing this kind of comparison, a GMC at4 Duramax with 910 torque, a 1.8 torque converter step up and 1st gear low range for a output ratio of 60:1 gets 98000fltlbs at the wheel.

GMC did not say if this teaser is for a concept or a production model. It did say the truck will debut in May of this year, though, which is fairly soon, so i’d be surprised if they bothered with a concept. We’ll keep our ear to the ground for more info, though!

Yeah GM should just quit wasting time and money on concepts all together, they never turn out like the concept anyway, and it is just fodder for criticism.

They did hold to the Concept on the 5th gen Camaro and people yet to today complain about the interior and visibility out.

Same on the SSR and Solstice. Too much Concept and not enough practical daily driver.

They call em Show Cars for a reason.

11,500 ft-lbs at the wheel is not as crazy as it sounds, a stock Silverado 1500 in 4-low would match that pretty easily, a 2500 diesel would make far more than that without needing 4-low. It’s deceptive with EVs how everyone advertises wheel torque but gas vehicles are rated at the flywheel. Excited to see the full reveal seems like it will be very cool

I like this idea. Hummer by GMC. I wonder if they could resurrect the Pontiac name too. Launch an all electric sports car and call it Pontiac by Buick.

The Camaro E/V can be the Pontiac T/A instead with “455 E/V” with the Camaro Copo powertrain. And resurrect the G8 underneath T/A based on CT5 with 2.7t standard. Sell them out of Buick Dealers

I just can’t help but wonder how we can have a new truck in a few months, that’s all electric, makes 1,000 hp and 11,500 ft-lbs, gets 400+ miles of range and is “affordable” (depending on your definition which will vary from GM’s, for me affordable is less than $600 a month)? What’s the longevity of these batteries? Cold weather performance? Charge times? Is it possible this is all too good to be true?

      Ill bite on that steak,

We can not drive one of these yet, we can not purchase one of these yet, How many months ago did Tesla throw that metal ball at their truck ?
And Tesla makes their own batteries, TODAY, they are not waiting for a partnership factory to get up and running any longer. Rivian, has their pickup and SUV out in the public already, and have some pretty deep pockets their as well, with Amazon, and Ford !!

So I always hate to be the Debbie downer, but I WILL stick to my guns with regard to GM being behind !!!

Because just like everything else GM has spewed out in the last 2 years, NOTHING has changed YET !!!

We see great pictures of the great and powerful GM, Yet when the day arrives, a 2.0T and a GM 8 speed junk transmission ! Or a average GM blah 3.6 V6 FWD AWD SUV !! Or a $80,000.00 truck with a $25,000.00 truck interior !!

I still hope I am wrong here, I would love nothing else than to be able to buy another great GM vehicle, but AGAIN, just like always,

We wait, and wait, and wait,
And we will see, when we can buy one and get one delivered, and drive one. I am guessing here in 2022, or later !!
Well you know, GM will make a hundred or so, than excuse, excuse, than maybe a hundred more.
Shouldn’t be a strike, so no one to blame there.
Well at least UAW related !
Still need batteries, from someone, somewhere !!

Steak, don’t count your eggs before they hatch !
This is great NEWS, but I waited 5 years to buy a better Cadillac, only to find out the new ones were even worse than the ones we drive now !
The Dash in my new truck, or the interior in general less a couple improvements, is worse than my old one !!

We will see, We will see, this will be a huge uptick followed by another long waiting period.
      Its GM !!

No thats not what I feel the need for, its this:
It is just hilarious to me that people here find me pessimistic. Most of the people who know me personally find me super optimistic, even telling me so often ! Man the winter here sucks, how do you stay so optimistic, Man you had to take your new GMC to the dealer again, how do you stay so optimistic. You know stuff like that.
So who are you people ? I mean who are you, that you take 45 minuets to read a post ? Who are you that think I am on here 24/7 ? You do know we humans living today have smart phones and you can carry them all over the word and do business – right ? It takes 5 min. or less to type a response to this site, while I still can conduct my business.
So what I find interesting about some of you here, is your consistency towards GM yet your inconsistency towards your own thoughts. You see, my view has never changed, I wait, and wait, and wait, to touch and feel and drive a new GM product, before I comment on how great or horrible I THINK it is. Its neither great or horrible, to me , until I kick the tires per say.
But you people are hilarious !! Most of you, the same people who were against ANY EV, and the likes of Tesla, would just end up a huge failure. Now that GM is full guns on board, you say, it simply needs to be done !!So while you people called me crazy for the last 4 years, and said EVs will never work and GM is stupid for investing all their profits in EV, I still remained realistic and said the same thing, I always do !
GM has to make a vehicle people WANT, The customer !!
GM needs to talk to the customer, and take care of the customer with customer support.
There is a difference between GM’s dealer support, and GM’s customer support ! The customer is spending their money on the GM product, The dealer is just a place to store GM vehicles and manipulate sales numbers.
          My realistic response here is:
This EV Hummer looks great SO FAR !!
We haven’t seen enough to go any further !!
The Cadillac Escala, looked great at one time also !!
And every vehicle GM has released in the last 2 years has been average at best, and behind the competition in most cases, other than the Yukon Denali interior, and the C8 Vette, All the new GM’s were same as except, and some a step back !!
          So we will see !!
And also, to those dealer people on here, is that always your response to the customer when you have nothing to offer ? Go somewhere else and buy something else !! Like I also have consistently said here, instead of telling the customer to go somewhere else, go buy a RAM, or a Mercedes for instance, maybe, just maybe, you should do your job as GM’s eyes and ears on the ground, and tell GM their products are not ” Good Enough ” !!

No instead you tell the very customer you need to buy another brand, and treat the very customer you need like $hit, over a $16.00 part, they already paid for, as you continue to watch your market share slide, and slide, and slide some more. As you watch your stock prices just flatline since bankruptcy !! Will GM ever be able to change the status quo ? Not with people like you people here always telling them its 5 stars on the ground, and their products are ” Good Enough “

6.2 or 3.0 both produce 460 ft lbs of torque. 1st gear in a 10L90 is 4.70. Rear axle ratio is 3.23. Tire height is 33″; radius is 1.375′.

    460 X 4.7 X 3.23 / 1.375 = 5,079# wheel torque

A D-Max 6.6 will more that double that, to over 11,000#. We know a D-Max will do it for a long time. How long will an electric truck do it??

    Reply
    1. Ryan

You’re calculating tractive effort not torque. To put the hummer in the same context (tractive effort), that would be 8,364 lbs assuming the same 33″ tires. And really these numbers for the ICE trucks are low because the torque converter will bump those numbers up at low speeds. Plus you still have 4 low.

      Reply
      1. PhD PE

        “Tractive effort?” No.

To calculate tractive effort, the coefficient of friction of both the tires and the driving surface (road) have to be considered, as well as the weight of the vehicle that is applied to the subject tire.

Wheel torque is level of torque produced at outside diameter of the tire/wheel assembly. Taller tires will result in less wheel torque, shorter tires will increase wheel torque.

Whether or not ALL of that wheel torque can be transferred into forward motion is a function of the aforementioned elements of tractive effort. If more wheel torque is generated than traction exists, the wheel(s) spin.

        Reply
        1. Ryan

You’re correct it’s a ‘theoretical’ tractive effort, more math would be required to figure out how much is actually transferred to the ground.

Torque is force x distance (foot-pounds). So when you divide by the wheel radius you are taking the distance out and you are just left with a force (pounds). Nothing wrong with your math just the wrong units.

Doesn’t matter what tires are on the Hummer, it still makes 11,500 ft-lbs at the wheels. Just like on the 6.2 gas engine, doesn’t matter what diameter the flywheel is, still makes 460 ft-lbs at the flywheel.

          Reply
        2. Jacob Beach

Wrong, torque is at the hub, that is why it’s is ft&lbs. Once you apply a distance, I.E. A wheel, it’s just lbs force. Yes it’s even tractive force. Max tractive force before slipping is weight x friction coefficient. Once tractive force is grater than max traction, slip occures. Think of a wrench a 100lb force man on a 1″ wrench, is it the same torque on a 2″ wrench? Don’t divide by wheel size unless you divide the Hummer by it’s even larger wheel size.

          Reply
    2. Adithya Ramachandran

I think you need to divide by rear axle ratio and final drive to compare the values to engine Torque. My malibu hybrid makes 1800 lb/ft of wheel torque. Doesn’t mean that the engine is rated for that. Also, for hybrids you have a torque split with the motor, so calculating wheel torque becomes quite tricky.

Reports recently that GM was testing an electric vehicle ( no mention of which car or truck ) that will go 400 miles, which is 640 km, on a single charge. If this electric Hummer was to travel at 62 MPH ( 100 KM ) for just one hour, what will the torque and HP drop down to with 20 to 25 percent of the battery charge used up? The max torque will drop to about 80 percent of the 100 percent charge rating. Since torque and HP are tied together, then the 1,000 rated HP will drop to a max of 800 or less after that one of hour of highway driving. Of course after 6 to 7 hours of driving nonstop at normal highway speeds, the battery charge will be so low, that the driver will have to stop, recharge over half of the battery charge. This will take about 1 hour or more. meanwhile the diesel Hummer, will keep driving after a 5 minute fill up of diesel fuel. Will Arnie Swarts whatever buy the first one? Maybe Kim K or hubby will get the first one. After all, this electric hummer will sell for a crazy $125,000 but with a steering wheel and tires, it will be closer to $150,000. Unless they put a huge solar panel on the roof…..that will be an extra $10,000. LOL

As much as I hate BEVs that’s not how batteries work.

E/V power curves are the same as an R/C car. Great power from the fresh recharge, virtually dead at the end. Look at the Tesla Model X vs F-250 on a recent tug-of-war on YouTube, the T-MX pulled the F-250 first but the F-250 pulled the T-MX as the E/V battery drained, no such issue with ICE power.

Does anyone else find it interesting that the specs for this so closely match the Tesla Cybertruck specs for it’s high-end variant? Three motor, same HP, same range, same performance. Could Tesla and GM have worked together on this without telling anyone about it? Will there be lower spec’d versions of the Hummer EV?

Tesla said 800 HP for the tri-motor.

Where did you see the amount of motors mentioned? Sounds like their will be lower variants since they list these specs with “up to” in fine print.

So I see positive comments on this upcoming product. Do we still crucify Mary Barra or no? What’s going to be the Boy’s Club MO on this product and her?

Well I for one have NEVER crucified her, not once !!

I think she is doing a great job !!

I think her only trouble is THE PEOPLE LIKE YOU GUYS, on this site, and ones like you still working at GM and the GM dealerships !!!

GM has said and personally told me that their eyes and ears on their dealerships !!
People like Elon Musk saw this coming when he started Tesla, he saw the exact thing the likes of Toyota and Honda saw in the 80’s,
What was it you all ask !!!
People want the car they want, and customer service to go along with it !!

People do NOT want what you tell them they need in black and white, with a cheap interior !!
How many dealers does Tesla have ?
How many tv ads for Tesla are on ?

ZERO, they build a vehicle people want !!!
And when they sell the customer one, they don’t treat the customer like crap when the customer needs support !

If and when GM builds this Hummer, If GM dealers treat it like the Bolt and Volt, GM wont sell any !!
If and when GM builds a Cadillac EV, if they have troubles, and treat the customer like GM customer support does now,

GM will still not figure out why their stock stays the same and people don’t want the same thing others offer !!!

Its the customer, the customer, the majority of TODAYS customer, NOT the GM customer of 1975 !!

Mary sees this, she has seen it for years !
Mark was in charge of the vehicle lineup, he is a 1975 car guy, look what we got, Blah for the masses and a new Corvette !!

This looks so promising. I am elated that GM is bringing the Hummer Brand back as an EV Brand.
Stroke of Genius by the General. As I have been stating here for a while, this vehicle will serve two huge purposes for GM.
One is that they will be able to charge a High Price on these. That means they will make money and lots of it from Day one.
And number two which is actually much more important is the amount of Free Advertising and Press this is getting them for free already. GM couldn’t spend enough money to get this kind of Coverage on one of their vehicles.
Looks great so far. The Interior better be Top Notch and very, very modern looking.
Now about that May unveiling date, come on GM, do we really need to wait that long?
I want to see this so badly Haha

I am waiting for 2000 HP , 25,000 ft lbs of torque and 0-60 under 2 seconds. (1.99 would be ok)

So much for all those who had been crying GM had been falling behind. The clues were there that things were happening and just waiting till the time was right to enter the market.

The new truck platform was needed as it was designed to be available for ICE, EV and Hydrogen as announced at the intro. Well it is here now and the Hummer is coming.

The ROI should be met with the Hummer sooner and it will pave the way to profitable Chevy EV models at similar pricing of the ICE models..

The real key will be for GM to make sure they get the Hummer right. There will be a bright spotlight here and there has to be few compromises here at this time and price point.

Excited initially, but not after I saw it was electric.

IMHO GM should offer the Hummer with electric, gas, or diesel engines . Let the customer decide. They would sell more trucks that way and avoid a flop like the Bolt and Volt.

I agree, but part of this is largely PR. They may wait 2 years so that Hummer is known and thus GM as the green machine of the world to fight and beat Tesla, then they will expand the lignup. We already know the T1 platform is capable of both battery and eletric, so it should be as easy as a battery and frunk delete to add in the Duramax
