GM To Revive Hummer Name For Electric Pickup Truck

A new report indicates the General Motors‘ future fully electric, full-size pickup will indeed fall under the Hummer brand, and the automaker plans to announce the nameplate’s revival with an advertisement that will air during coverage of Super Bowl LIV next month.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the battery electric Hummer pickup will be positioned as a premium, low-volume off-roader and will be sold exclusively at GMC dealerships. This may explain the conflicting reports we’ve heard in recent months, with some outlets reporting the truck will be a Hummer and others saying it will be a GMC.

2009 Hummer H3T

GM isn’t reviving Hummer completely, however. While the electric pickup will be branded as a Hummer, GM has no plans to open Hummer dealerships. WSJ’s article indicates the truck will be positioned as an “individual model within GMC,” so it sounds like it will be entirely up to GMC to market and sell the truck. We also imagine this means there won’t be a family of Hummer vehicles like there was before with the H2, H3 and H3T.

Additionally, GM has allegedly enlisted NBA superstar Lebron James to ensure the Hummer re-launch gets as much notoriety as possible. WSJ said it could not surface the details of Lebron’s deal with GM, though he is expected to appear in the Super Bowl marketing material.

This means the Hummer truck will be the first vehicle to arrive using GM’s upcoming BT1 electric vehicle platform. The BT1 platform will serve in a series of large electric vehicles from GM. All of these BT1-based vehicles will be built at GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant in Michigan. GM had previously sought to have the Detroit-Hamtramck plant shut down, but the UAW successfully lobbied to keep it open during the 2019 collective bargaining process.

There are a number of reasons why GM may be interested in reviving Hummer. In addition to the obvious nostalgia factor, bringing Hummer back also allows GM to capitalize on current consumer tastes for rugged vehicles and off-roading – a trend evidenced by the ongoing success of vehicles like the Jeep Wrangler and Ford F-150 Raptor. An emissions-free Hummer also has the potential to generate a “wow” factor among consumers, with many only remembering the brand for its gas guzzling SUVs like the H1 and H2.

GM said previously that its electric pickup truck would arrive in the fall of 2021. We may not have to wait that long to get some official info on the vehicle, though, with Super Bowl LIV only a few weeks away.

  1. YES THANK GOD,

I just hope GM doesnt fall short and just make it another generic Silverado under a different name. I really looking forward to this and I dont even like EV’s / hybrids

    1. I’m stunned by how thought-out and logical this move from GM is. This is exactly what Lutz said should have been done in the first place, in his book. Marketing Hummer through GMC dealerships is a genius business move. Not only is the GMC brand by far the strongest in the GM portfolio, but now the whole Hummer dealership debacle can be bypassed. Apparently the commercial, and the subsequent return, will be referred to as “Hummer, by GMC.” That’s got a nice ring to it. Just hope it LOOKS like a Hummer, distinct from GMC vehicles. I think it will.

I do admit that it will suck a bit to not have several Hummer models beyond the truck and SUV, but this is unquestionably the right move. Upmarket truck built on a platform with several potential high-volume additional models to help spread the development costs? Win. Getting two legitimate off-road vehicles to the market when the segment is white-hot? Win. Resurrecting the Hummer name for those vehicles? Win. Making the Hummer’s return electric? MAJOR media win. Marketing through GMC to save millions in dealership setup? Win. WIn. Win. Win. This is the GM we all knew they could be.

Cannot wait for the Super Bowl commercial. This news is going to spread across the country like a wildfire come February 2nd, big fan of buying Super Bowl air time (so many damn people watching) instead of doing a private reveal event. Can’t wait for the hype explosion. This is gonna be interesting!

As long as they make it Really Niche. Has to be a Cross of a Rivian and Land Rover Range Rover.
Has to beat the Rivian Off-Road and meet the Interior Technology as well.
It also has to match the Land Rover Range Rover in interior Quality.
If they do that, GM might have a Huge Hit on their hands and unlimited Media Buzz that they could not spend enough of their money on for absolutely Free.

It just makes me so happy to hear this !

GMC ” Professional Grade “, truck capabilities, is EXACTLY where Hummer belongs !!!!!!

        Such GREAT news !!!!

        1. Agreed with both Momolos and lifelong.

I’m especially interested to see how the marketing through GMC goes. Obviously, the use of the GMC dealer network was going to happen. But this “Hummer by GMC” thing…is interesting.

Someone below mentioned that they don’t think there will be many GMC badges on the new Hummers. I completely agree. The Hummer badge will be prominent on both the truck and SUV.

That’s why I think this “Hummer by GMC” marketing strategy means that this will NOT be referred to as the “GMC Hummer.” GM will simply call it the Hummer in official releases. The GMC thing is likely only to make it feel more at home at the GMC dealerships, and of course, to tie the well-liked GMC name in with it. That’s also why I don’t see any “Denali” trim for it.

My guess is that, if it made financial sense (which it doesn’t, from a dealer infrastructure and cost standpoint), GM would have loved to bring Hummer back as it’s own brand, to be basically an electric Jeep brand. The GMC comeback just made too much sense. So while it’ll be sold by GMC, and the name “GMC” will be used in the “Hummer by GMC” ad strategy, I don’t see a major connection to GMC beyond that – no GMC badges (or minimal usage), no GMC styling, no GMC trims.

And I’m perfectly okay with that plan.

          Reply
          1. Agreed !

That’s almost where GMC is with the Denali, and some customers are there.
Some Denali customers already put Denali across the grill, and on the flaps etc. So your left with a GMC on the tailgate, or even in the corner of the tailgate.
I just last week had to explain to someone that a Denali, was a GMC Sierra, because they were confuses at how the Denali was a SUV and a truck. I had to explain Denali was a trim package on all GMC models, and then the light came on.

So like I have said before, the Chevrolet or GMC, or Cadillac, DID NOT MAKE THE,
            Escalade
            Corvette
            Denali
The vehicle made the name !
Like Cadillac now going back to a name, its a joke really, make a great vehicle ( Escalade ) and call it ” $hit ” and people would be wanting to buy that $hit !

  2. I traded in my 04 GMC Sierra HD Diesel in September of last year for a 2019 Bolt. I also have a 2012 Volt. I love both of them but I do miss the truck. I will be trading in the Bolt for the Hummer next year.

    Reply
    1. That seems to be a big switch!
Why did you have an ’04 3/4 ton to begin with, or did your need of such a big truck end?
Curious. I can see where going from that capability to the substantially smaller vehicles would leave you wanting.

      1. I traded in my 03 Jetta GLS TDI for the truck in February of 2009. I work as a molecular biologist but ran a landscaping/lawn-care bushiness on the side. I no longer do lawn care and live only a few miles from work. The truck was not a good short distance commuter vehicle-it would rarely get up to normal operating temp. The Bolt is perfect for my short commute. The Volt is my wife’s car and she’s often traveling for work.

General Motors CEO Mary Barra had the Buick Enspire electric CUV and didn’t have the guts to pull the trigger to bring the vehicle to production and as consequence, allowed Ford to come out with their electric Mustang Mach E to leapfrog GM; Barra needs to either bring the concepts to development or simply resign.

——– “individual model within GMC,” so it sounds like it will be entirely up to GMC to market and sell the truck.——-

Isn’t that just what I said in the other article ?

    Well I guess I said GMC – Hummer – Denali !

But if GM truly makes this new GMC – Hummer a premium vehicle, they wont need it to be a Denali.
However if it is a great product, making a high end Denali trim will just top it off !

I’m so, so, so, curious, will there be a SUV version of it I wonder ?
Or maybe only if it sells good enough !

Or the same vehicle with a 2.7T – 10 speed, ICE.

I will wait to see this, not one bad thing to say here, GREAT NEWS again lately from GM !!!!!!!!!

Maybe a removable top, so a SUV or truck, now that would be even greater !

  7. I think this will be a great next step.

Just slapping a EV drivetrain into a Silverado and putting a new grill in it is not going to entice the average truck buyer into a EV truck.

By going to a Hummer it will make it some thing special and different. It also will help polish up a name that got tarnished by the green movement.

Keeping it a model and not a brand is what they should have done the first time. It gives much more flexibility and will be much cheaper to operate.

The image and ego thing is already involved as Lebron James will be doing the commercial that introduces the return. Here in town he was very high profile as the Hummer was his first vehicle he ever bought, it has a West Coast Customs job on it and he still owns it.

I expect GM to keep this simple. We will see a crew cab with a short bed also an SUV version It will look like a Hummer updated. It will be on the Silverado platform since it was designed to use an EV driveline as well as ICE.

This will be a premium model and it will be over anything Denali so there is no need to tag another emblem to it for no reason. I may be surprised if the even have a GMC emblem on it though part of the GMC franchise.

GM will sell a decent number of these but it will remain a lower volume model. The higher price will make it profitable and it will show case the EV driveline.

In time the priced of the driveline will get cheaper and in a couple years it will migrate over to the other trucks.

As for going off road that is not what this model is about. It was mostly an image model last time seen more on Sunset Blvd than at Moab.

Think of this as the Tesla S model for GM. High priced and profitable while becoming a must be seen in vehicle. Tesla made a mistake not updating the S as that was a good vehicle for income till it got old.

    1. C8.R,
I gave you a thumbs up here, and for once I hope everything you say here is correct.

The only thing I dislike that you wright is when you try to make it seem Tesla did the wrong thing.
If by doing this you are trying to say ” see GM isn’t the only vehicle company making those type of bad decisions, then OK !
But when you comment you make it sound like Tesla made a bad decision with the model S, yet GM has made this same mistake for years and on O so many models.
GM was for sure, and still is, notorious for NOT upgrading soon enough, loosing sales, and killing the model !

Just lately the Cadillac CT6 is the perfect example of this, if GM would have got rid of that 2.0T, in their best sedan, sooner, and had the Blackwing with a AWD from the start, where would that vehicle be ?

I would like you, C8.R to give me the number, what is the number that GM needs to sell, before these are canceled ?
      This and the C8 ?

I will end this on a positive note,
GM is getting up to speed here, finally !!
It just amazes me we are talking this Hummer, and a Cadillac CT4 with a 2.0T – 8 speed junk transmission, and it is the same vehicle company !

C8.R, you are just the man for this question, before we get to see it, How big will this vehicle be ?
If this rides on the Silverado platform, that suggests it is bigger than the Canyon.
Yet if it competes with the Rivian R1T, that vehicle is a five seater with a 4.6 ” bed with a 7,700 Lb, towing, so closer with the Canyon.
      What do you know ?
Have you seen a Rivian in person?

      1. Had a Tesla maintained the S sales at $120k they would not have had to presell the 3 and be so late to market as they would have had the income from the S paying for it.

They let the S get old and then started to discount them to much cheaper and less profitable prices.

All they had to do is rebody the car with new a new look. This would have brought more sales and even got previous owners to come back and buy the latest.

No Every company does this as high development cost have hampered changes.

You tend to be Ignorant about the economic factors MFGs have to face and always leave this most important factor out of your long winded rants.

Sorry but all the facts are needed to make a case that is plausible.

Were you talking about Cadillac and GM ?

          Or Tesla ?

I got confused, when you said they let the BLAH get old and made them cheaper !!

Any way, how is Tesla doing compared to Cadillac anyway ?

Even now days, how is Tesla doing compared to GM anyway ?

Even now days, how is Tesla doing compared to X ?

Like I said, We know what changes GM has made to get the $hit out !

Because, like I have said here for 3 years, the status quo, was not going to do it !

Is the new Hummer, the status quo ?
Is the C8, the status quo ?
Is the new Escalade interior, the status quo ?
is the new Yukon interior, the status quo ?
Is the new 10 speed, the status quo ?
is the new tailgate, the status quo ?
is the new camera system the status quo ?
          You watch and learn !
          Because,
          The XT4, status quo !
          The CT5, status quo !
          The XT6, status quo !
          The CT4, status quo !
          The XT5, status quo !
The Bolt EUV, status quo !
Will GM sell some, sure, but GM sold some CT6 also.

We will see C8.R, we always see !
          But would you look at that, a GMC, RWD/AWD ( I hope ) somewhat mid-sized SUV !!

C8.R, if you wonder why I comment to you more than others, its because I just get such a kick out of it when you are totally against something, or someone, until GM finally makes the move to the right decision, then you are like, its the best thing you have ever herd of doing !!
It makes me laugh every time, and just makes my day !

I post not what I want or how I feel. I post the reality of what is in play or happening. You appear to want to only run a corporation on emotion while that is only a small part of what you need to deal with.

Am I happy with every move no but at least I understand why it is done. Today business is a do more with less. Bloated budgets and wasted money can not be tolerated when dealing with MFGs from around the world that hold an advantage of cheaper labor or little legacy cost.

Sales in the auto industry are on a decline and ea h company must make more with less. They also have to balance cost of development with income. And expected future income.

You tend to forget all that and show you really only hold part of the picture.

Things like a Denali Hummer? You just don’t get it. The Hummer is well above anything a Denali ever was. That would be a step back.

This would let the market decide the transition rate and not force or take away products that the customer wants.

Come on C8.R, ” the Hummer is well above anything Denali ever was ”

The GM Hummer hasn’t even made close to the shear profit over costs that the Denali name has !
Like I said, whos reality do you speak ?

And remember, we haven’t seen this new GMC Hummer yet, but I hope its all that much more than the new Yukon Denali is ! Like I said, your a hoot !

The seats will be better than the new Denali seats ?
The tech, other than the EV will be better than the new Denali tech ?
Will the chrome be heavier ?
Will there be no beloved GM plastic showing ?
Will the frame be coated or the rust wax, but better than the Denali ?

You see this GMC Hummer could be better in all ways than the Denali, but will it be ?
I hope so, like I said, we will see before we can point out the reality !

Again, ALL the excuses you call realities you don’t think I understand, WERE BUSINESS DECISIONS YOUR GM MADE !!!
They are NOT realities of ALL the automotive world, because the companies you speak of did NOT make those BAD BUSINESS DECISIONS !!!

Its like you, blaming yourself for stocking to many camshafts that you bought, it was your decision, HOW DO YOU BLAME OTHERS, and its YOUR reality of having to many camshafts nobody wants.
I did not order those camshafts nobody wanted, so your reality is NOT my reality !

You can NOT speak of what is REALITY, when it is a business DECISION !

A decision you or GM makes, is NOT reality, its YOUR decision !!

If there is a US law, that makes ALL vehicle manufactures use UAW labor in the USA, that is a REALITY of the business.
But if it is YOUR decision to use UAW labor in the USA it is NOT reality, its YOUR decision !

O well I know you don’t have time to read this.

  8. So it sounds like it could be a direct competitor to the Rivian R1T and the Cybertruck. I think the more direct rival will be the R1T, since the Hummer will likely be a more traditional truck format with a premium interior. On the ICE side, the Jeep Gladiator will probably be the closest rival.

  10. This is not a direct rival of anything. It is a Hummer thing.

While it may be a pick up and EV it will be its own thing. It’s not going to be a work truck, fleet truck or anything like that. It will be kind of the Ferrari of trucks.

Note a Ferrari to most is not a sports car it is a a Ferrari.

It will be more expensive but you will get something no one else offers for the extra money you pay.

    Reply
    1. As long as YOU GET SOMETHING, for the extra money !!

And you are not trying to separate a fool from their money, like you said earlier !

      A better interior – OK
      A better drivetrain – OK
A vehicle that is expected to last 300-400thousand miles as Tesla is – OK
      Better lighting – OK
And on, and on, BETTER VALUE !!!!

Because if this Hummer, is like the last onslaught of GM vehicles, and it is a Hummer badge stuck on a Chevrolet, LIKE THE CADILLAC XT6, like you like to say C8.R, that is where the fool is separated from their money !!!

But we still have to see !!!
GM has a HORRIBLE track record of promising high end, top of the line, then you just get a Chevy with a screen stuck on the dash !

Whatever they changed after the truck interior FAILURE, seems to be the ticket.
They know what it was, you know what it was, I know what it was !
When the next 6 GM badged vehicles hit the dealers lots, GMs only trouble will be trying to figure out how to make enough of them !

And the only one they are missing, is a better mid-sized SUV option !
This Hummer EV, might be it !
The same only different Cadillac SUV EV, might be it !
Yet in my opinion, GM needed an ICE in this same segment, in the USA !
I hope I am wrong, and the charging system, and batteries tech, will come quicker, but in the US, we are just that far behind the rest of the world. And I don’t see the same equal playing field between EV and ICE as the rest of the world.

  11. Hummer has a very strong brand identity factor. In the past, the name also made everyone reflect upon it’s very poor gas mileage.

Going EV eliminates the downside to owning a Hummer, and draws instant attention to the new Hummer EV.

The designers will have fun giving the original Hummer a futuristic look. Lots of great potential.

The fact that the Hummer is an established brand or nameplate, and everybody knows what a Hummer looks like, will give this new Hummer instant recognition by the public. That’s a significant advantage for GM, and I give them credit for moving forward on this program.

  15. I have had a thought here. Since the closing of Hummer the GMC line has grown larger genders and a soft Hummer like tone to their models.

If and only if this Hummer model really takes off the a Hummer styling could cheap over to the GMC line and even produce models over the Denali line. Think of it like the a Cadillac line doing the V Series and then the Blackwing. This is a take on the Benz AMG and then the Benz Black series.

This could generate more money and even become their line of EV products as they become available. This would not only generate money and profits but also server both ICEand EV segments at once while making the transition.

    1. I think that is a GREAT idea C8.R,

If it is the TRUE customer wants it should drive the design language !
And I do think the GMC line has swayed towards the Hummer look somewhat.

But this will be the ONLY and FIRST this customer driven strategy has happened as you speak.

Look at the 4 different interiors that are rumored in the full-sized SUV line, when the GMC interior, steals customers away from the Chevrolet line, like the exterior look of the truck is doing, you will be able to see what the customer wants ! Sure Chevrolet will still sell trucks, sure Chevy will still sell SUVs, but its a outright switch, almost in the trucks, and the GMC actually drew in a few new customers, even with the $hit interior. Could you imagen what GMC could have done in the truck sales, if they would have had the new Yukon interior from the start !

And I for one don’t think the Cadillac V of V has worked yet. And will wait to see if more people, like myself, would rather have the Premium Luxury, with the 3.0TT, or a V-series with the 3.0TT, what are you paying for here ? A fool and their money, with the low level V !
A fool and their money, with a plastic piece Denali !

Again, if this new Hummer, is a fool and their money scenario, today, in this world, it will fail !

But if this new Hummer is indeed a better product, offers BETTER, it will sell, and be a hit !

  16. Note to GMC, if no one knows it exists your DOA. GMC/Buick tend to market their vehicles much better than the rest of GM so please market it better than we have seen with past vehicles either hybrid or electric. This includes educating your dealers that tend to know nothing about what they are trying to sell.

  17. Sorry but am I the only one who is skeptical here? We are talking about a brand which absolutely tanked previously, did not age well at all, and has an overall negative public perception. I frankly have no idea why they are bringing it back. Would it be that hard to just come out with a BT1 based SUV/truck and call it something normal? Why are we all clamoring to hold on to this namesake anyway? It was silly back then, and it still is. I’d much rather see them come out with a competitive product that stands on its own merits and doesn’t need a silly brand revival to sell units.

    I am a skeptic here !

But here is my take, I am only a skeptic as far as GM and their cheapness !
This vehicle should have already existed in the GMC lineup !
And if GM releases this with the same cheapness as say the new 2019 truck interior, or the new Cadillac onslaught, it will fail !

But this is my thought on the Hummer name:
To start with California is the WORLDS 5th largest economy !
Most of the majority of the west cost people care about Earthly waste, and the health of the planet !
The Hollywood stars are among this trend, and are among the same people who loved the Hummer in the first place !
So just that ” press ” alone and this new, Hummer by GMC, being an EV, should be a win – win !

With this new, Hummer by GMC, GM is doing exactly what Elon has done with Tesla, only GM is ALWAYS at least two years behind, and more like 3 – 5 years behind !

I see this as a hit, —– IF —- GM puts forth a vehicle that is better than the average GM blah vehicle !!
When this new, Hummer by GMC, is released, and the auto world gets a look at it, if it is viewed as the typical GM cheapness vehicle, it will fail !

The average buying population of today, are NOT fools, as C8,R believes !
GM has to quit thinking they can release cheap crap and market it as better, Hummer badges on a FWD/ 3.6 average GM blah vehicle is not going to work !

But I think GM is getting the drift !!!!!
But WHY did it take so long ?

Every vehicle GM released in late 2018 all of 2019, up to today, other than the C8 Vette, have been BLAH ” Good Enough ” GM vehicles !
