Drag Racing With Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, Shelby GT500, Hellcat Redeye: Video

The more things change, the more they stay the same. Watching a Chevrolet Camaro, Ford Mustang, and Dodge Challenger line up for a drag race is something folks like us have enjoyed for about half a century now, but frankly, it never gets old, especially when dealing with the latest and greatest from all three camps. And that’s exactly what we get with the following seven-minute, 50-second video from edmunds.

In the GM corner, we have the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, which arrives with the 1LE Track Package. Peak output hits the rear wheels with 650 ponies and 650 pound-feet of torque thanks to the supercharged 6.2L LT4 V8, while the optional 10-speed automatic transmission handles the cog swaps.

Up next is a Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 with the optional Carbon Fiber Track Pack. Behind the snake badge is a supercharged 5.2L V8 making 760 horsepower and 625 pound-feet of torque. The blown ’eight mates to a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Finally, we have a Dodge Challenger Hellcat, which is equipped with the optional Redeye Widebody trim. Making it go is another supercharged 6.2L V8 producing 797 horsepower and 707 pound-feet of torque, all of which is sent rearwards through an eight-speed transmission.

So then – three ultra-high-performance muscle cars battling it out for straight-line dominance. Which will walk away the winner?

Of course, there’s a huge number of variables involved in answering that question. For example, the conditions aren’t exactly ideal here, with frigid ambient temperature and an un-prepped track surface keeping traction at a minimum. The cold temperatures are particularly troublesome for the Chevrolet Camaro, given it comes equipped with heat-sensitive Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperCar 3R tires.

Even so, watching these three beasts go all-out in a side-by-side-by-side drag race is definitely exciting. The choir of supercharged V8 muscle is by itself worth hitting that play button.

  1. Given the price of the 2020 Chevrolet C8 Corvette, one has to wonder how many of these cars can still coexist given that the mid-engine Corvette is the superior vehicle and offers more value for the dollar.

    1. I wonder too. They should offer the C8 with stealth coating though.
Supersonic flight causes the stealth coating to wear out faster which means if you’re not in combat, the necessity of supersonic flight isn’t needed as high subsonic will suffice which saves on the stealth coating.

      1. 5 years since the LT4 motor (Z06) was introduced and another 3 until it found it’s way into the 2018 ZL1.

        2018 Camaro ZL1-1LE 1.7L supercharger at 9.2lbs. boost.

What has the competition done since then?

        2018 Challanger Demon 2.7L 7L supercharger at 14.5lbs. boost
        2020 Mustang GT500 —2.7L 7L supercharger at 12.0lbs. boost

        That’s progress!

      1. What ever you say (),ueef,
It’s always anti (GM) at edmonds whether GM’s vehicle is better or not. If it is, they will find something to dig on.

The Demon/current Challengers and GT500 have always been drag oriented cars, the ZL1-1LE is intended for road coarse. Will we ever see the Deamon or GT500 run Nürburgring?

My guess is NO, not even the “Wide Body”😱

  4. Throw in the C8 and it wouldn’t even be close. The Camero did great for having much less HP than the others.

    1. Those cars are all direct competitors and it doesn’t include the C8.

It all comes down to what is expected: First On Race Day! And every day in any conditions. 🤣
