Chevrolet Silverado Outsold By Ram Pickup In Q4 2019

GM’s Chevrolet Silverado line of pickup trucks was outsold by FCA’s Ram Pickup during the fourth quarter of the 2019 calendar year. According to the latest sales numbers released by the automakers, Chevrolet Silverado recorded 163,341 deliveries in the fourth quarter, while the Ram pickup saw 172,579 units, placing the Silverado exactly 59,484 units behind the Ram in total deliveries. Ford F-series sales figures were not available, as Ford will release its sales figures on Monday, January 6th.

Silverado vs. Ram Sales - Q4 2019 - USA

MODEL Q4 19 / Q4 18 Q4 19 Q4 18 YTD 19 / YTD 18 YTD 19 YTD 18
RAM RAM PICKUP +6.93% 172,579 161,397 +18.01% 633,694 536,980

GMC SIERRA +2.09% 68,722 67,312 +5.82% 232,323 219,554
TOTAL +3.78% 404,642 389,887 +7.41% 1,441,617 1,342,115

Not only did the Ram pickup outsell the Silverado in terms of cumulative sales, but it also managed to widen the gap from the Chevy truck from a sales standpoint during the fourth quarter: Ram sales increased 7 percent, while those of the Chevrolet Silverado grew 1.3 percent. When including sales of the Silverado’s corporate cousin, the GMC Sierra, GM truck sales totaled 232,063 units – 59,484 units more than those of the Ram.

It’s vital to note that Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra deliveries were significantly hampered during the fourth quarter by a 40 day-long labor strike orchestrated by the UAW. During the time of the walkout, Silverado and Sierra production came to a halt.

For the 2019 calendar year, the Ram Pickup also outsold the Chevrolet Silverado, with 633,694 deliveries for the Ram and 575,600 units for the Chevy. The Ram also widened the sales gap with the Silverado, with sales growing 18 percent versus a 1.7 percent decline for the Silverado. When adding in the GMC Sierra, GM truck sales totaled 807,923 units combined, which is 174,229 deliveries more than Ram.

That said, GM’s launch cadence called for producing higher-trim (more expensive) versions of the Silverado during the timeframe, which sell at lower sales volumes. However, lower-trim (lower cost) and higher-volume models were only added later toward the Q3 timeframe.

About Chevrolet Silverado

The Chevrolet Silverado is a lineup of full-size pickup trucks sold primarily in North America, but also in the Middle East and in certain markets in South America. Slotting above the mid-size Chevrolet Colorado (known as the S10 in some markets), the Silverado is Chevrolet's largest pickup truck and currently consists of the 1500 light duty model, two Heavy Duty models - the 2500HD and 3500HD, as well as Conventional Class 4, Class 5 and Class 6 Medium Duty models - the Silverado 4500HD and Silverado 5500HD and Silverado 6500HD.

The 2018 Chevy Silverado represents the fifth model year of the third-generation Silverado. It is based on the GM K2 platform shared with other full-size pickup trucks and SUVs from GM. Though the line sold relatively well, it became less competitive in the marketplace with time when compared to its primary Ford F-Series rival, due to lacking cutting-edge features such as turbocharged engines, a rugged off-road variant such as the Ford F-150 Raptor, a diesel engine option in the light duty (1500) model, and also various modern features and equipment.

Luckily, an all-new Silverado arrived for the 2019 model year that addresses many of the issues of its predecessor model. Customers began taking delivery of the all-new truck in the second half of August 2018.

Chevrolet says that the all-new 2019 Silverado is the result of over 7,000 customer interviews - the most intensive research in its history. The new model uses higher grade alloy steel in the bed floor as well as various mixed materials that result in a reduction in weight and improved performance, with weight falling about 450 pounds. The truck also offers an expanded amount of models for a total of eight, including the new 2019 Silverado Trailboss.

Riding on GM's new T1 platform shared with other future GM full-size trucks and SUVs, the 2019 Silverado offers more technology, convenience features, and engine/transmission combinations. While details of five powertrain combos have already been revealed, GM has not yet shared details of the new inline-six 3.0L Duramax Diesel engine, only stating that it will be "best-performing" and that it will be mated to GM's new 10-speed transmission.

Notably, the outgoing, Chevy will continue manufacturing and selling the outgoing, K2 generation Silverado alongside the all-new model for a limited amount of time in limited configurations.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD

Having overhauled the Silverado 1500, Chevy will next overhaul the Silverado Heavy Duty. The brand released a teaser image of the upcoming all-new 2020 Silverado HD in April 2018 and announced the vehicle in November 2018. The truck will launch in the 2019 calendar year as a 2020 model.

The 2020 Silverado HD will be comprised of the Silverado 2500HD and Silverado 3500HD that ride on a more robust and capable version of the new T1 platform when compared to the 2019 Silverado 1500, while sharing many high-tech features and design elements with its light duty brother.

Completing the overhauled Silverado family is the 2019 Silverado Medium Duty series, comprised of the Silverado 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD.

  1. Seems like everything with this truck went wrong. Interior, roll-out, strike. Sad

  2. This truck’s exterior is atrocious. It rides too tall. It’s boxy in the front and back. The only leather you’ll find is on the steering wheel, and that’s well after dropping 50k. I laugh at everyone I see in a new Silverado. Might as well light cash on fire as you’re throwing it out the window.

    1. It also gets worse mileage than the truck it replaces, to say nothing of the Ram.

    2. Agree. There are a few GM vehicles that are simply overpriced and worth considering lightly used. These trucks are not among them IMO.

GM? Seems that they are satisfied with…….sell fewer, continue to push the higher trim versions and make them as cheaply as they possibly can.

    3. There is leather on the steering wheel, dash and door uppers FYI in the LT and RST trim. Add the seats on the high country and ltz. Further compared to the ram, I can buy a high country for the price of a Laramie, and I get the 6.2. I can a Denali with carbon pro package for cheaper than a ram limited. Add ram quality problem history and no wonder the gm twins outsell ram despite the setbacks

  3. This is sort of a stupid comparison. GM trucks (Sierra + Silverado) outsell the Ram. They might have increased sales by more of a percentage, but at the end of the day GM sold more trucks than FCA did.

  4. When will GM learn this….It is Tech and interior materials…It is Tech and interior materials….It is Tech and interior materials….It is Tech and interior materials…..It is Tech and interior materials….It is Tech and interior materials.
It is NOT that hard. The shift started years ago. Bob Lutz was pounding the table about interiors and then when he leaves we get what we have currently. Please let this be a lesson GM, Please!!!
Unacceptable for Ram to sell more than Chevy. Period.

    Reply
    1. Why is it “unacceptable”? If RAM is building and offering what people want, then more power to them. I am not in the market for a pickup at the moment, and likely won’t be for the foreseeable future. But, if I was, the RAM would get a lot of consideration.

Decades ago, there were years where Plymouth outsold Ford, and outsold Chevy. Was this – somehow – unacceptable? Or, was it because Plymouth offered features and value the public wanted to buy?

(Ford would be out of the picture completely due to real-world fuel economy issues, but mostly due to the fact my two local dealers both have poor attitude. One ignored me completely on the occasions I have been in the market; the other plays the “added market value” figure to prices, and won’t budge.)

It is unacceptable that Chevy is losing the Second Spot to Ram simply because of how cheap they are with their interiors and their Technologies recently.
Meaning GM MUST DO BETTER. That was my point I was trying to say.

  5. Tundra down 5.6%
    Titan down 37.5%
F-series struggled in 2019; 1st quarter large numbers were dumped on Rental & Commercial fleets; sales down in 2nd & 3rd quarter(no numbers yet for 4th quarter)
RAM & RAM Classic- looks like a large number of buyers are coming from the other Chrysler brands. Plus there’s a hell of a lot of unsold RAMs in inventory. When Carlos Traverse comes in as the new CEO, one of his 1st acts will probably be ending production of the RAM Classic.
GM – has been playing the same games with commercial fleet sales, discounts & keeping the last generation trucks in production, but not to the extent as RAM & Ford. They’ve also been sending a good number of bed delete trucks to Navistar to be eventually sold as Box Trucks.

Taken all together it looks like fullsized truck sales are at their peak.

  6. Well Chevy was down slightly and GMC went up more than Chevy lost. That was not even factor in the limited dealer model inventories and 5 weeks of strike and ratifying along with a slow down on parts.

These stories are more about drama than real numbers. Ram is still over a quarter million trucks behind GM.

GMC is a major factor anymore as they have added to their sales numbers and a large number of the Sierra numbers are high profit trucks.

In the end with the high discounts ar Ram and the high material cost at Ford, GM is the leader in profitability in the segment.

    1. There is truth to GMC trucks selling for more. I think I saw a number that said 60% of GMC trucks were in Denali trim. My last 4 HD trucks have been Chevy, I think this next time it will be a GMC AT4. It is simply a great looking truck and I like the option list. Although I wish I had more say in what got put into their packages. End up buying a lot of items I don’t want, at least when building one myself. Maybe the dealer can alter some of that.

Personally I have no issues with the interior or the exterior of the LD or HD. I know that doesn’t play well here or elsewhere, but I like my 18 LBZ 3500 and I would buy it again. The 2020HD is not a lot different (interior), but I personally don’t need it to be. I do recognize that GM needs to upgrade the interiors to be competitive and I am confident the upgrade coming next year will overcome Rams advantage in that area. Too bad they had to take such an ass beating to make that happen.

  7. You guys realized the GM trucks are still up despite a bad launch and a worker strike, also Ram sells thier old model in 19′ as the Silverado/Sierra like set up. Don’t forget FCA been sold as a company, I like car companies with two or 3 letters unlike FCARDzgfgjj…..

  8. Time to revise the old like a rock commercial. But this time it will be in reference to sChevy pickup sales. Chevy pickup trucks sales are falling like a rock.

  9. This is just like the Cadillacs of GM where the XT4 and XT6 just move GM people from the XT5.
The GMC took the sales of the Chevy, do to the polarizing look of the Chevy, I am one of then in the HD.
But looks are subjective and the Chevys with the right trim are looking good, if you like that look.

So that leaves me to the interior, and engine transmission options !

If GM would have, ONCE AGAIN, spent some of the money they make on these vehicles, on an interior, we would NOT be here talking of the RAM leading the Silverado !

If GM would talk to their customer, instead of who ever the h3ll they do, on these trucks, GM would have had the 5.3 with 10 speed out of the gate instead of that POS GM 8 speed junk.
And AGAIN if GM would, ONCE AGAIN, talk to their customers, instead of whoever the h3ll they do, GM would have had the 6.2 – 10 speed in the lower trims, for those who want a sheer work truck yet need the performance of the 6.2. ( and same thing with the 3.0TD – 10 speed ! )

For all of you here who keep saying, GM truck sales are down do to lack of supply, I some what agree, I guess !

Because just like GM pushing the new CT5 out to dealerships with the 2.0T, as they did with the CT6 pushing that out to dealers with the 2.0T.
GM pushed trucks to the dealerships, the most average customer DID NOT WANT, and so you end up with a whole lot of price reduced GM trucks nobody wants sitting at the dealership, and the customer is still waiting for the trucks they want !

I will say this, I am glad GM needs to sell trucks, so they adapt quickly and change for that market, unlike they do with Cadillac, other wise they would force all truck owners to but the 2.7T 8 speed in the truck, and if they didn’t sell enough, they would just cancel the truck.
    Sounds ridiculous doesn’t it !
Yet the CT6 is canceled in the US as GM just finally got it where the customer wanted.
Could you all imagine if GM took 4 years to correct the truck, Ha !

  10. I am happy that GM is offering the 6.2/10speed in the 2020 TrailBoss Custom and TrailBoss LT. I think that is the hottest truck on the road rnow.

  11. Sad thing is GM leadership won’t admit a fail and just correct it.
The styling was too polarizing on the Chevy, the interior too cheap! It wouldn’t take much to fix this truck!!! Get rid of the stubby front bumper and let the front fenders blend into it instead of lap over it, offer more interior color choices across the whole trim level, NOT JUST FREAKING BLACK!!! Offer a premium interior trim package across the line. They could keep the cheap interior for those who want basic and give the option at a cost for a premium interior upgrade. They don’t need an entire re-work, just a little more effort put forth toward details.

  12. FYI, Ford F-Series was at 896,526 for 2019 easily out pacing GM combined sales. GM doesn’t seem to be worried though, as I said before, they want the higher end, higher profit sales. It’s about the $$$.

  13. Accept Silverado moved from second place to third place in sales. Its true fact, There is no point of saying GMC and Chevy together beat ram, If you go back 2 years , Chevy was the second best selling truck and combined with GMC , GM beat ford F series.

I think GM needs to update the truck interiors to match the current time. Again Ram offers lot of deals, I know GM dont need to match deals but they need to offer good value for money for the trucks.

  15. The 2021 Tahoe proves that Chevy is capable of making a good interior. Bring some of the interior from the new Tahoe over, make a Raptor fighter, add a panoramic sunroof, and start being innovative by starting new trends instead of always doing follow up trucks.
