Competitive Sales Comparison
Chevrolet Colorado sales fell significantly faster than the segment average during the fourth quarter of 2019. The circumstance enabled the recently-launched Ford Ranger to outsell the Colorado during the quarter, pushing the Chevy truck into third place in its competitive set.
In all, the Colorado was outsold by the Toyota Tacoma as well as the Ford Ranger (see Ford Ranger sales), but the Chevy truck did outsell all other segment contenders, including the Nissan Frontier, Jeep Gladiator, and its own corporate cousin – the GMC Canyon (see GMC Canyon sales).
It’s worth noting that the Tacoma sold more than twice as many units as the Colorado during the quarter. In fact, the Tacoma’s 61,179 deliveries were almost twice that of Colorado and Canyon sales, which netted 32,009 units combined.

The GM Authority Take
The 15 percent decline in Chevrolet Colorado sales during the fourth quarter is the direct result of significantly reduced availability caused by a labor strike. Orchestrated by the UAW, the strike lasted 40 days, disrupting GM manufacturing operations in the U.S. and elsewhere. Production of the Chevy Colorado at the GM Wentzville plant was suspended during the timeframe.
With no new vehicles rolling off the line, Chevrolet dealers had sold out of the lion’s share of desirable Colorado inventory, leaving some customers without the ability to buy the truck. As such, it’s very much possible that those customers turned to competitive offers in the segment, such as the new Ford Ranger or Jeep Gladiator.
It’s worth noting that all existing entries in this space – including the Tacoma, Colorado, Frontier, and Canyon – lost market share during the fourth quarter, as the Ranger and Gladiator took up the share. We expect Chevrolet Colorado sales to rebound during the first quarter of 2020, as inventory levels normalize.
In addition, GM will forego a Colorado midcycle enhancement and will completely overhaul (redesign and re-engineer) the truck around 2023. In the meantime, the Colorado will get a small facelift for the 2021 model year.

About Chevrolet Colorado
The Chevrolet Colorado is a mid-size pickup truck. It is currently Chevrolet's smallest pickup truck in the U.S. and Canada, slotting under the full-size Chevrolet Silverado. In Mexico, the Colorado slots above the compact Chevrolet Montana and the similarly-sized S10, but below the Silverado/Cheyenne (the name for some of Silverado's trim levels in Mexico).
The current Colorado was introduced in 2015 and represents the second generation of the Colorado nameplate. The model rides on the GMT-31XX platform shared with the GMC Canyon, as well as the international-market Chevrolet Colorado/S10 and Chevrolet Trailblazer.
The 2018 Chevy Colorado represents the fourth model year of the second-generation Colorado. The vehicle remains highly competitive in its segment, offering two gasoline engines and a diesel motor, which is a segment exclusive. The off-road-specific Colorado ZR2 was launched for the 2017 model year. However, the Colorado family continues to lack various features asked by many present and potential customers, such as a moonroof, a sliding rear window, as well as a range-topping LTZ or High Country trim level.
The 2019 Chevy Colorado represents the fifth model year of the second-generation Colorado. The vehicle sees a new Colorado ZR2 Bison package, new exterior colors, a new 18-inch wheel, black bowties for every ZR2 model. Additionally, the 2019 Colorado gets new set of infotainment systems that represent the third generation of Chevrolet infotainment systems, Type A and Type C USB ports, a second in-cabin microphone, a high-def Rear Vision Camera, UltraSonic Rear Park Assist, a heated steering wheel, and 6-way power driver seat on some models. The street-focused Colorado RST and Z71 Trail Runner off-roader are also added to the lineup. The manual transmission is deleted from the powertrain lineup.
A midcycle refresh is expected for the 2020 model year. It is believed that the update will bring revised front and rear styling, as well as possible updates to the interior, and powertrain.
For the U.S. and Canada, the Chevrolet Colorado is built at the GM Wentzville factory in Missouri operated by GM USA. The model sold in Asia-Pacific is built at the GM Thailand plant in Rayong, which is operated by GM Thailand. The GM Sao Jose Dos Campos plant operated by GM Brazil builds the Chevy S10 for South America.

Unless the redesign is scheduled for model year 2022, skipping the MCE was a mistake.
Interesting how an ancient vehicle like the Tacoma own 1/2 it’s market. GM should revise its offerings with fantastic interiors and a bumper to bumper warranty. This performance is pathetic…. the Ranger is an old platform too and it sold very well inQ4… GM sucks!
Wow !! the Tacoma is a sales beast.
I knew the big babies will come out crying, the twins couldn’t sell because.. they wasn’t any to sell (strike). Of course guys will worship the competition on here will say the Colorado isn’t competitive or something..
The strike did not help as many on the forum were waiting.
The Ford is just catching up from the soft start. Most buyers are folks who had a Rangers and were eager for the new truck.
The new model will appear in 22 as the 23 and things will go to a soft start and build up to normal sales.
This segment is a very loyal base no matter what the brand.
The GM truck still is the best handling, riding and stopping truck in the segment. The a Ford and Toyota both are old and offer little other than a bigger aftermarket for Toyota and a more torque at Ford.
We knew coming in the Ford had a waiting strong base and they and GM will slowly eat into Toyota but neither would take the lead even if they offered all that you dream of. The a Toyota base is pretty firm.
Well there is a lot on the local lot, doesn’t GM have a way to move these vehicles around to the dealers in need ?
Same with the full-size trucks, there are ALOT on the local lot !
Any way , I love my 2015 Canyon !
BUT , go drive that Ranger, and get back to me, all you GM lovers here !!
GM needed to get that 2.7T – 10 speed in the 2021 version !
And I know some here will complain that it costs so much to do the certifying etc., I bet it wont cost as much at Toyota selling twice as many and Ford moving UP.
Now when you do get the 2.7T- 10 speed released, you have to convince those people to switch !
But I guess GM can only focus on the full-size line again, and the mid-sized line just gets more ” Good Enough “
In Australia Toyota Hi Lux (Tacoma) is king off the road.
I have a large fleet of Ford Rangers in a rural Australian state. The area is rough/remote but the Fords are blowing diffs, gearboxes, axles and particularly the power steering system is a nightmare. Breakdowns are causing significant downtime and recovering them is also expensive.
We are now transitioning back to Toyota, and LandCruiser, because the others aren’t up to it
Holden Colorado is no different
Pablo,
Toyota Tacoma is now used the same way, on the South Dakota farms.
Before 2010, all you would see were GM and Ford trucks, then the slow transition started.
Now almost an equal split of Tacoma and RAM !
They are now everywhere, tool boxes, fuel tanks, farm runners !
I’ll give this a brief shot but you said people around you started to buy Ram and Toyota and a few posts later said people are buying Toyota because of reliability, we all know Ram and reliability don’t rhyme and even the F-150 market is being challenged by Ram, so what is it?.
The Tacoma is still a 2005 model and the Ram(s) is a 2002 model(s) with improvements, are they “good enough”?.
But its easy to answer questions when there not made up, like C8.Rs Carl.
Most of the RAMS on the farms here are solid axel Cummins rigs, and the Tacoma’s are old, I agree.
But GM’s ” Good Enough ” is everything in the mid-sized is ” Good Enough ”
But as the Tacoma is a old model, on the farm, as HD haulers and runners, features of these trucks are ” Good Enough ” And again the Toyotas reliability and customer support are far better than GM’s ” Good Enough ”
Farmers here NEVER buy Denali’s to do the running or working, sure you see the Denali’s running around from sale barn to sale barn with a livestock trailer and in the Black Hills with snowmobile, decks and trailers, but the workers and runners are just not GM any longer !
Reliability, and customer support for the Toyota !!
Better engine transmission options for the Ford !!
That’s enough said here !
Well OK, don’t forget the GM still has the GM 8 speed junk transmission the customer has to deal with, and without GM having any customer support, its rough !
This will all be good come mid 2022, I guess ?
Want my coworker Carl’s phone number?
His Taco rusted in half in 8 years and because it was one year before their cut off Toyota said sorry about your luck.
The only support he got was shown the way out.
C8.R,
What does Carl drive now ?
I’m betting Carl is still driving Toyota then !
Why is Carl still driving Toyota ?
Reliability !!!
You lose the bet.
He bought a small Ford sedan that today has given way to a low mile but clean S10 ZR2 that has proven very reliable.
He had bought the Toyota expecting reliability and he has none. Dealer or reasonable MFG help he got none.
The truth is every MFG sins! Yes even Toyota the Jim Baker of the automakers.
There was a time Toyota was better and everyone else was worse. Today they all are in about the same place with mostly good but yet all have some issues.
O scott3, CR.8,
But I won the bet !!!
And got a twofer, the only answer you could have given better than this one is to say Carl bought a minivan !!
Here we go:
Just like the GM 8 speed junk transmission, Carl’s frame was junk, and just like Carl, everyone at Toyota was NOT taken care of, and Carl’s truck was NOT fixed by Toyota !!
Now if Carl would have gotten an entire new frame, as you did GM 8 speed junk transmission, Carl might have stayed with Toyota !
But the DATA still shows Toyota has a better customer support system. And not some bought and paid for JD Powwwwar data, real people and vehicles on the road !
And #2 See, people still do buy sedans !
And I am glad to see he is now a GM man, I wish him very good miles out of his S10 rig !
Keep those needle bearings in that front end serviced good, that’s what fails first in the rural areas !
While Mary Barra fiddles…..
I appreciate these regular sales-data reports. One question, though:
– How are sales of the diesel Colorado & Canyon trending? If I’m not mistaken, it’s the only diesel option in the segment. Are buyers interested in the “baby Duramax?”
Toyota doesn’t have to deal with the UAW, so that’s a plus. They don’t try and re-invent the wheel every year. The big three are so lost, let’s hope they don’t need another bailout. Still waiting for my taxpayer bailout discount.
All these Toyota lovers never even drove a Colorado. There just reading shit on the net. The ride and build quality are way ahead of Ford and Toyota and any other jap truck..have been since 2015. Get your heada out of your asses and keep hating. You can have your ugly tacos and copy cat rangers
Must be lots of misguided Tacoma owners, it’s the best selling and the highest resale midsize truck for what, the last 25 years? GM can only rely on JD Power, which anyone with a brain knows is absolute BS. Maybe Toyota is just providing roofies to Tacoma owners to keep them coming back.
They need to get a redesign out for 2021 and not wait. Replace the controversial 8 speed with the smoother 10 speed. Offer a performance model with the 2.7T engine. Modernize the interior with push button start, a larger touchscreen, 8-way power seats with optional heat and ventilation etc. Barra is so worried and laser focused on what might be 10-20 years down the road that she doesn’t appear to notice the walls crumbling down around her today.
Was going to comment but you pretty mus said what I wa thinking.
Have a 2018 Chev Colorado Z71 diesel best truck I have owned pull better then Tacoma better fuel mileage more comfortable interior not sitting the floor. I have had Tacoma’s for years good trucks but not like they use to be. This is a awesome little truck won,t touch a ford for nothing.
Les Lewis,
I 100% totally agree with you !!
That truck you drive is AWESOME !!
2.8TD with the 6 speed is a proven combo, lots of low end torque and a good solid ( on average ) transmission to boot!
My beef is with the 3.6 V6 8 speed GM junk transmission.
You see my AWESOME Canyon, and I do love this truck, has the 3.6 with the 6 speed like yours.
The 3.6 has ZERO torque at 1500 rpm where GM programmed the 6 speed to shift, yet after a tune, mine holds 2000 RPM or higher and I still get better mileage than with the GM tune.
So as your truck is by far the best mid-sized truck offered, by far, in my opinion !!
The 3.6 V6 – 8 speed GM junk transmission, truck is not !!!
And I would not buy one or recommend one to my worst enemy !!!
Even the people like scott3 aka C8.R, who loves his 3.6 GM 8 speed junk transmission, has had his transmission replaced !!
Two completely different trucks here !
Now a 2.7T – 10 speed , you moved right in you realm.
GM made a mistake when they did away with the 5.3 V-8 in Colorado
GM likes to blame all their mistakes on the UAW, I’ve been here in west central Fl since Oct.20 and I know of three GM dealers within a 15 mile radius that had plenty of Colorado’s and Canyons since we arrived. There wasn’t a shortage of vehicles, it was a shortage of quality vehicles. As said many times they think they can skimp on interiors and other quality issues and people will blindly buy them, DUH! Their trucks are overpriced and under quality, I’m a GM retiree and I’m looking at a Nissan Frontier that’s 15 years old in the design, but I don’t want all the gimmicks, I just want a truck that’s built good and will last.
I think the shrink in sells is lacking some critical data. Yes sales are going down. Take into consideration that most people who purchased a Colorado since it was reintroduced are extremely satisfied with it. I bought a 2017 W/T crew cab 4×4 for my wife when it was new. We love the truck so much I ended up getting a 2018 ZR2 for myself. I would speculate that so many people bought Colorados are happy with them, why would we rush to get a newer model?
I’d have bought one if the interior didn’t resemble a ’99 pontiac grand prix. Fix it. It’s 2020 for crying out loud. Round bulbous hard plastic sucks. Bought another truck instead.
its a cheap looking truck. the ranger looks sporty, tacoma is known for reliabilty , quality, GM cheap cheap, cheap.
No surprise. No options, no sales. I want a new Canyon but I can’t even get the same options my 2002 Trailblazer LTZ has. IMHO, it doesn’t matter how much boost you put on a 4 cylinder gas engine, it still hasn’t got the towing capacity. I drove the new Ranger, and it’s slick, but runs out of juice when towing. The baby Duramax doesn’t. Guess I’m still waiting.
