All-New Buick Encore GX Launches In Mexico

After announcing its arrival in Mexico last November, General Motors has just officially launched the all-new Buick Encore GX in the Latin American country. The new SUV is part of the brand’s plan to refresh its product portfolio in the Mexican market, in addition to renew its image as a youthful alternative to models offered by traditional luxury marques.

“Buick Encore GX aims to conquer a young market, which does not seek traditional luxury, but Side B of Luxury,” said Marketing and Advertising Director of GM Mexico, Jorge Plata, in a statement. “It is a premium SUV that grew in size, but at the same time became lighter, with more power and more technology. We are sure that it will captivate many customers,” he added.

GM says that the new Buick Encore GX will go on sale in Mexico at the beginning of next month, almost at the same time as its arrival in U.S. dealers. In its first model year, the Encore GX will be available in that country with a single powertrain choice and in three trim levels: Convenience, Leather and Sport Touring.

As such, the 2020 Buick Encore GX will be offered to Mexican customers with the new turbocharged, EcoTec 1.3-litre L3T three-cylinder engine matched to a continuously variable automatic transmission, which produces 155 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque. As we learned during its North American debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show, this powertrain is connected to a front-wheel drivetrain – the only one that will be offered in Mexico.

In addition, the Encore GX’s engine includes an automatic stop/start system for greater fuel efficiency, which the driver can enable or disable at the touch of a button. According to GM estimates, the new 1.3L engine offers combined city/highway fuel economy of 31 mpg.

The Buick Encore GX will be available at the beginning of February at all Buick-GMC dealers in Mexico, and North American units of the SUV will be manufactured at the GM Bupyeong plant in South Korea. It’s worth mentioning that the Encore GX becomes Buick’s entry-level utility vehicle in the Mexican market, where the first-generation Encore will no longer be offered. Pricing for the three trim levels are as follows:

  • Buick Encore GX Convenience: $499,900 pesos ($26,550 USD at the current exchange rate)
  • Buick Encore GX Leather: $565,900 pesos ($30,050 USD)
  • Buick Encore GX Sport Touring: $589,900 pesos ($31,330 USD)
