These days, pickup truck customization is as popular as ever, with a plethora of components on offer to enhance a model’s styling, capability, practicality, and performance. The GM trucks lineup is no different, and whether the pickup in question comes from Chevrolet or GMC, U.S. customers can choose from a long list of parts right from the factory to spec theirs to taste. However, there might be a better way to do this, as evidenced by the Accessory Packs offered with the Holden Colorado down in Australia.
For those who may be unaware, the Holden Colorado is the international version of the pickup we know and love here in the States. While both GM trucks run the 31XX platform, the Holden version differs quite a bit from the Chevy, from the dimensions, to the cab and bed configurations, to the interior.
What’s more, the Holden Colorado can be customized with a number of different accessory packages offered directly from Holden, ranging from aesthetic changes, to full-blown off-road specialization. The packs also cater to certain jobs that GM trucks may perform, be it hitting the worksite, or farming.
Each Accessory Pack comes with a cool name to describe what it offers. For example, the Black pack comes with:
- Z71 Black wheels
- Rear tailgate decal
- Black grille
- LED light guards
- New hood treatment
- Two window weather shields
Meanwhile, the aptly named Xtreme pack offers all the right gear for an extended time off the beaten path, including:
- All-terrain tires
- Side steps
- Sports bar and tonneau cover
- Hood treatment
- Rear step-up
- Heavy-duty springs
- Winch bar system
- Roof tray
- LED light bar
- Towing package
- Rear decal and guards
- Off-road recovery kit
Almost every component in the packs is engineered and designed in-house by Holden, while some components are sourced from partner companies. Critically, none of the kits void the warranty.
We love the idea of offering something similar for the U.S.-spec GM trucks. Although we may have our own packages to choose from here in the States, we find the comprehensive nature of the Holden packs to be hugely appealing as well.

They offer many parts here now and most dealers have connections to the aftermarket for accessories that are often more profitable than the GM ones.
It would be nice to offer more from GM but only if they can compete on price. As it is now Jeg, 4×4 parts and Summit kill GM on price.
Want proof just price the GM Chrome running boards vs stainless from Westin. Better board at a better price in the aftermarket.
All most all of these parts are available from the aftermarket. My bed extender is the same as GM’s but I got it under the APM label for less. APM makes the GM one and they charge more.
It all comes down to can GM compete on price with the aftermarket that already makes these parts for them?
The best thing about these packs that I see is that the warranty is not voided. You pay more for the same thing but the warranty is still valid so it may be that you get what you pay for? Either way, I’d like the choice.
And the Holden offers a manual transmission, because fuck the US thats why.
Generally these bolt on parts play no roll in warranty unless it does direct damage to the vehicle.
The only real advantage is it makes money for dealers from people who can do it themselves and that it could be rolled into the payment when they buy it.
