General Motors has announced it will launch its OnStar service with 4G LTE in the Middle East starting next year.
Speaking at the GITEX 2019 technology conference, Gary West, managing director of OnStar and GM Future Mobility in the Middle East and Africa, said the automaker has “aligned with the region’s dynamic and visionary leadership” to launch in the region for 2020. He also said OnStar is “working closely with public and private partners such as ESMA, the Dubai Police, Abu Dhabi Police,” and others to ensure a smooth and safe roll-out of our OnStar technology in the UAE.”
West elaborated on the matter when speaking at the 2019 Dubai Motor Show, telling Arab Wheels that OnStar already has “products placed in the market and the technology is being deployed,” with the help of Emirati communications company Etisalat. He also indicated OnStar would launch in late 2020 and will at first run on a 4G network before changing over to a faster, more advanced 5G network at a later date.
OnStar says prices for Middle Eastern customers “are not finalized yet as it is still a work in progress to make sure we offer the right pricing and packages.” Pricing will also be subject to change depending on if it’s for a Chevrolet, GMC or Cadillac vehicle. In the U.S., the OnStar starts at $24.99 per month for the Safety and Security plan, while adding 4G LTE connectivity brings the price to $34.99 per month. The Unlimited Access plan with no data cap starts at $59.99 per month.
“We are extremely excited to be partnering with General Motors on the safe and smooth rollout of OnStar technology in the region, which fosters a safe, more connected and efficient driving experience,” Etisalat vice president Alberto Araque said previously in a prepared statement. This underpins Etisalat Digital’s commitment to support the nation’s long-term strategy in promoting digitalization initiatives, including eCall deployment in UAE and other connected car initiatives. This is also aligned closely with our overall strategy of ‘Driving the digital future to empower societies’.”
