Since its introduction in Brazil at the end of 2017, the Chevrolet Equinox has been marketed in two well-equipped versions in that country, both featuring the same powertrain. For the 2020 model year, General Motors has just announced the availability of a third trim level for the Brazilian market, while offering the turbocharged 1.5-liter LFV four-cylinder engine as standard.
As such, the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox for Brazil gets content changes on the LT trim and adds the Midnight Edition to keep the vehicle competitive. Like the U.S.-market Equinox Midnight Edition, which GM Authority exclusively reported on, this new version receives a dark scheme that gives the crossover a sportier appearance, with black front and rear fascia, black-painted alloy wheels and black bow tie emblems.
The 1.5L engine, which generates 172 horsepower in the South American country, now comes standard with the Chevrolet Equinox’s three trim levels – LT, Midnight and Premier. The new engine is able to satisfy customers who seek the best balance of performance and fuel efficiency, especially in urban driving conditions. As for the turbocharged 2.0-litre LTG four, it will remain an option on the uplevel Premier variant.
“The Equinox 2.0L turbo is the sales leader in its output range. Meanwhile, the 1.5L turbo engine debuts with the same content level and marks Chevrolet’s SUV entry into the most sought-after portion of the market, said GM South America Marketing and Product Director, Rodrigo Fioco, in a statement.
With this expansion of the Chevrolet Equinox lineup, GM expects to boost the model’s appeal and increase its market share in the compact utility vehicle segment in Brazil. In addition, the automaker reduced the Equinox’s starting price and is establishing it as Chevy’s technological showcase in that country. In fact, the General touts it as the most comprehensive model in its class with regards to comfort, safety, performance and connectivity.
The 2020 Chevrolet Equinox will arrive in Brazilian dealerships early next year with a starting price of R$129,990 (roughly $31,380 USD with current exchange rates), a total of four configurations and two drivetrain choices – front-wheel drive and AWD. The Brazil-market Equinox is manufactured at the GM San Luis Potosà plant in Mexico.
