GM’s cross-town rival, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, fields three offerings in this segment – the Jeep Compass, Jeep Renegade and Fiat 500X. The trio accounted for an impressive 56,984 deliveries during the quarter. Meanwhile, the two GM offerings – the Buick Encore and Chevy Trax – accounted for a cumulative 62,415 deliveries. As such, GM outsold FCA by 5,431 units during the three-month-long period. GM held a 27 percent segment share while FCA held 24 percent. Individually, the Encore and Trax each commanded an 11 and 16 percent segment share, respectively.
The subcompact mainstream crossover segment expanded more than 9 percent during Q3 2019 to 230,297 units. As such, the Encore’s 18 percent increase in sales outpaced the segment average.
The GM Authority Take
Going forward, it will be interesting to see whether Buick Encore sales volume maintains the upward trajectory experienced during the third quarter, especially given the UAW strike, which lasted over a month during Q4 and disrupted GM’s production and distribution operations as it relates to vehicles and parts. However, given the fact that the Encore is produced in South Korea, the vehicle was likely shielded from direct production disruptions.

The 2020 Buick Encore GX is larger than the “regular” Encore and will be positioned as a subcompact-plus CUV, fitting between the subcompact Encore and compact Envision in the Buick lineup
Currently, the Buick Encore is being threatened by newer segment rivals such as the Nissan Kicks, Jeep Compass, Honda HR-V, Toyota CH-R, Kia Niro and Hyundai Kona on the one hand, and on the other hand by other Buick products such as the upcoming Buick Encore GX, which will be sold in the United States alongside the first-gen Encore. The Encore is one of the oldest vehicles in the segment, having received a facelift in 2017. As such, it’s entirely possible that the all-new Encore GX may cannibalize sales of the outgoing Encore, despite being slightly larger and having a higher price point.
About The Numbers

About Buick Encore
The Buick Encore is a subcompact crossover utility vehicle (CUV). It slots below the Envision as Buick's smallest CUV and rides on the GM Gamma 2 platform shared most directly with the Chevrolet Trax; a variant of the architecture is also shared with the Chevrolet Sonic/Aveo. The model was Buick's first offering in the subcompact (B segment) crossover space.
Having launched for the 2013 model year in the U.S., the Trax received a refresh for the 2017 model year that consisted of all-new front and rear fascias, an updated interior, a new infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and more.
The 2018 Buick Encore represents the fifth model year of the first-generation Encore. The model receives several changes including one new exterior color, a cabin ionizer, capless fuel fill, and several package-level changes. The 2019 Encore got two new exterior colors, the deletion of the Preferred II (1SD) and Premium (1SN) trim levels, and a new Safety Package called Safety Package II. The 2020 model is expected to be the last model year of the current, first-generation Encore before an all-new, second-generation model arrives.
The Buick Encore is produced at the following GM plants:
- GM Bupyeong factory in Bupyeong-Gu, South Korea operated by GM Korea supplying North America
- GM Dongyue South in Yantai, Shandong, China operated by GM China and SAIC supplying China

some actually think buick is a premium brand. why are you comparing them to toyotas, hondas, etc …
if you are implying that the trax/encore are in the market segment, aren’t you basically saying this buick is a rebadged chevy?
I see our official anti-Buick spokesperson is at it again (Steve). What I really don’t understand Steve is why your desire to troll and attempt to discredit anything Buick? Buick is premium over those other brands. The article is about sales of the Encore and it shows other sales of similar “sized” crossovers in that size segment. The author could and should have also included sales of the smallest Acura, Lexus and BMW models. There’s a youtube video of a direct comparison of an Encore to a BMW X1………and the Buick won.
I’m kind of curious Steve, what do you personally drive?
“There’s a youtube video of a direct comparison of an Encore to a BMW X1”
you are 3 months early for april fools day.
just mentioning bmw and buick in the same sentence is hilarious. lay off the spiked eggnog junior.
We GM folks are proud to remind “steve” that GM vehicles in all forms beat back the likes of BMW not once but twice during the ww 1 and II. That’s the power of GM.
Steve is apparently a sad and lonely person who’s puppy got run over by a Buick Lesabre at some point. I noticed he didn’t have the nads to tell us what he drives. I’m guessing a BMW? Kind of fits the profile. If not, then I’m positive it’s a Toyota or Honda.
Oh, and Steve, I owe you an apology. It wasn’t the Encore Vs. BMW on Youtube. It was Encore Vs. Mini (owned by BMW and a BMW product). I’m sure you will have a different take-away, but she did give the Encore the nod in the end.
no need to apologize. anybody with functioning cerebral cortex knew what you said wasn’t true.
i could tell you the cars i have but you should really be asking me what auto stocks i own.
that would be a bit more germane to the discussion wouldn’t it? that is how i stumbled on this website to begin with.
stop thinking like a used car salesman.
Aw, hit a nerve did I? Maybe you can take some of that money you must have and upgrade your 2017 Prius. When you are at it, take an online course on how and when to use capital letters.
junior, i don’t want to embarass you any more than you have been. go sell some cars.
