California is a big, big state, and while most TV shows and movies focus on the sun-drenched southern half, there’s plenty of mud and weather to be had in the north – just the right stuff for some down ’n dirty fun in a pickup like the 2020 GMC Canyon. No surprise then that General Motors is offering a new LPO-level package (that is, dealer-installed) called the California Elevation Special Edition.
The new 2020 GMC Canyon California Elevation Special Edition package adds four bits of content to the pickup, including:
- Black GMC emblem
- All-weather floor liners
- Black three-inch round assist steps
- Front and rear splash guards
It’s a nice little addition, and the California hat tip is sure to draw in buyers with that Golden State pride. Pricing is set at $1,195.
The 2020 GMC Canyon California Elevation Special Edition package is only offered for dealers located in California, and only on the mid-range SLE trim level. The California Elevation Special Edition package also requires installation of the “standard” Elevation Edition package, which throws on 18-inch Satin Graphite wheels, 265/60R18 all-season tires, and a black grille with a body-color grille surround. The “standard” Elevation Edition package is priced at $650.
As evidenced by the images seen here, the package is both functional and aesthetically pleasing in a rough-and-rugged sort of way. The images we used come from the official GMC configurator, and show the 2020 GMC Canyon finished in a tasty shade dubbed Dark Sky Metallic. Unfortunately, the configurator images are not totally accurate, as they don’t include the California Elevation Special Edition package’s black GMC emblem. Nevertheless, the look of this package is undeniable, as is the functionality.

Wow I thought it was going to be something exciting they can keep that pos in California
You can find a new Cadillac ELR for about $35K; imagine if Cadillac had borrowed a page from Chevrolet’s C8 Corvette and had offered their ELR for about $45K and slowly increased the price as they may still be building the car now if they had followed the strategy especially by improving the ELR with a more powerful electric motor and higher capacity battery.
I would not call that package a POS. I would call it not worthy of giving it a name. While certainly functional, it is much to do about nothing. All are order ready options that you could already get. They lumped them together and gave it a name. According to my math, the cost of the package doesn’t appear to me to be any kind of special deal over ordering the options separately. I guess they are trying “cost effective” ways of moving these trucks until the next gen version comes in a couple years.
